BEIJING, Dec. 4 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang has urged the country to offer better services for the disabled.Li made the remarks Friday while visiting the Care and Rehabilitation Expo, a three-day international exhibition on equipment to assist disabled and aged people.Friday marked the International Day for Persons with Disabilities. China's disabled population exceeds 83 million. Li called for more efforts to care for the disabled in a bid to improve their quality of life.Further, the vice premier said the country would improve laws and regulations regarding the disabled and increase support of policies and fund input to serve the disabled population in better ways.Better services for disabled people would include improving the quality of public services, making more areas handicapped accessible, and assisting the needy and safeguarding their rights and interests in a bid to solving difficulties in their living, studying, and medical requirements, Li said.The expo, organized by the China Disabled Persons' Federation and the General Office of the National Aging Committee, brought together more than 200 manufacturers from 17 countries and regions, according to statistics released by the organizing committee.

BRUSSELS, Nov. 29 (Xinhua) -- The European Union (EU) and China Monday signed an agreement aimed at enhancing cooperation in the field of disaster risk management between the two sides.European Commissioner for International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response Kristalina Georgieva and visiting Chinese State Councilor Ma Kai witnessed the signing ceremony of the agreement for a joint project totaling 9 million euros (11.7 million U.S. dollars), among which 6 millions euros (7. 8 million U.S. dollars) will come from the EU.As the first bilateral project in disaster prevention, it is aimed at strengthening China's disaster management system with the support of the EU and its member states.EU Commissioner for International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response Kristalina Georgieva (R) shakes hands with visiting Chinese State Councilor Ma Kai in Brussels, capital of Belgium, on Nov. 29, 2010. BEIJING, Jan. 15 (Xinhua) -- China should steadily promote the internationalization of its currency, the yuan, the head of China's social security fund said Saturday.The internationalization of the yuan is a significant step for advancing the reform of the international monetary system, Dai Xianglong, chairman of China's National Council for Social Security Funds, said when speaking at annual economic forum in Beijing.The current international monetary system has not adapted to the new patterns of global economic development, he said, adding that currency diversification is a realistic solution.Currency diversification means continuing the role of dollar, increasing the role of the euro and internationalizing other currencies, he said.The U.S. dollar, serving as both the U.S. currency and the most important international currency, will be used for U.S. policy goals when the two roles contradict each other, spurring fluctuations in global financial markets, he said, adding that the dollar has a tendency to depreciate.He said the Chinese yuan is a stable currency, and so ensures the safety of other countries' assets.The Chinese currency also enhances world trade, protecting the interests of China's foreign trade and investment, he added.The internationalization of the yuan will take 15 to 20 years, he said, suggesting an expansion of the overseas circulation of the yuan and an acceleration in the opening-up of China's large commercial banks to speed up the process.He urged Chinese banks in foreign countries to offer funding in yuan.He also called for more efforts to reform the interest rate mechanism, to ease the process of the internationalization of the yuan.

QINGDAO, Nov. 20 (Xinhua) -- Taiwan-based EVA Airways Corp. Saturday launched a weekly direct flight service linking southern Taiwan's Kaohsiung City and Qingdao City in eastern Shandong Province.The service will operate on Saturdays. It is the first direct service between the two cities.The flight will increase the number of direct flights between Qingdao and Taiwan to 20 per week, according to Qingdao Airport.Thanks to increased people-to-people exchange between Taiwan and the mainland, Qingdao Airport's passenger traffic to and from Taiwan this year reached 145,495 on Nov. 15, a 55 percent year-on-year increase.
