Five transgender members of the United States military testified in front of Congress on Wednesday, the first to do so publicly.Army Capt. Alivia Stehlik, Navy Lt. Cmdr. Blake Dremann, Army Capt. Jennifer Peace, Army Staff Sgt. Patricia King and Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Akira Wyatt all testified in front of the House Armed Services Committee, according to the Washington Post.All five testified that they were able to do their jobs effectively after transitioning. Some testified that their fellow soldiers were comfortable with their transition, and their transition even allowed others to open up to them.“They talked to me and told me things they never would have before,” Stehlik said. “Things they said they’ve never told other people. I asked them why, and the consistent answer is that they valued my authenticity — my courage in being myself. It allowed them to do the same thing.”The Obama administration repealed a ban on transgender persons in the military in 2016, allowing active military members to serve openly as transgender for the first time in decades. But in 2017, President Trump abruptly changed the policy in a series of tweets. While a number of lawsuits have been filed and are ongoing, the Supreme Court recently ruled to lift an injunction in some cases, keeping the ban in place. The five military members testified that they all sought medical treatments as part of their transition that prevented them from deploying, but all said they were able to do so by taking personal leave in between deployments.Rep. Jackie Speier (D-California), who called the meeting, was among the representatives to file a bill that would allow transgender service members to serve openly earlier this month. From woodwork and sewing to basic assembly of kits, employees at the Mile High Workshop in Colorado are able to gain technical skills so they can transition into another job out in the community. The workshop serves as a stepping-stone for those facing barriers to work.“We do job training for folks who are coming out of prison, recovering from addiction, and rebuilding from homelessness,” Mile High Workshop Executive Director, Andy Magel, said. “And we do that by partnering with other businesses and doing contract work for them.”“In the last 5 years we’ve hired probably a few over 130 folks, and the vast majority of them have had experience with the criminal justice system,” Magel added.One of those is seamstress Antonette Smith."Something about this job makes you not even want to leave at the end of the day,” Smith said. Smith learned that even a misdemeanor conviction can alter someone's life.“Me and a family member got into a situation where the police were called. I was arrested and taken to the hospital. I woke up in the Denver city jail. I ended up pleading guilty to a misdemeanor II.”Smith says she only has a couple months left at the workshop and she’s nervous about what she’ll face when she applies for other jobs.“Where am I gonna be able to go and be accepted like here at Mile High. That’s one of my biggest fears,” Smith said.Attorney Jack Regenbogen with the Colorado Center on Law & Policy says one third of working-age adults have some sort of criminal history.That’s one reason why Ban the Box is gaining momentum across the country.“Ban the box is a national campaign to try to promote employment opportunities for people that have a criminal history,” Jack Regenbogen said.“Ban the Box” refers to the box commonly included on a job application that asks about somebody’s criminal history.“In many cases, this box is an automatic disqualifier. So many job applications are online today, and the second that somebody checks that box indicating a criminal history, it automatically ends their application. ‘Thank you for your time, you’re not qualified,'” Regenbogen said.Regenbogen says 35 states across the U.S. have enacted some sort of fair chance hiring policies. Most require public companies to take the box off the application, but some states have included private companies as well.“Each state that has passed ban the box has different nuances about who it applies to, and also, at what point in the hiring process a record can be considered,” Regenbogen said.Even though more states are taking initiative on Ban the Box, not every company agrees it’s a step forward. Professional Finance Company deals with debt collection. CEO Mike Shoop says the box is very necessary for his business. “It just helps us in our recruiting and hiring process to know upfront if somebody has committed a felony,” Shoop said.As of right now, Colorado state law requires that Professional Finance Company does not hire anyone who’s been convicted of a felony. That's because employees handle a lot of sensitive financial information.“We are a financial institution. We do handle financial transactions, and we do handle people’s personal identifiable information," Shoop said.If the box is taken away, Shoop says the company wouldn’t know somebody’s criminal history until the background check, which he claims would be a waste of time and resources for both parties, considering they wouldn’t legally be allowed to hire the person.Regenbogen says some states have considered that possibility and there are exceptions.“If the law says that they have to consider criminal history and cannot hire someone with a certain type of criminal history, then they can still ask on the application,” Regenbogen said.However, for a majority of businesses, that’s not the case. Regenbogen believes banning the box would improve society overall.“There are studies that show the number one predictor of whether someone is likely to reoffend and recommit a crime is whether they’re able to gain employment.”Those at Mile High Workshop certainly agree, which is why they’re trying to provide that second chance.“Nobody wants to be defined by the worst things they’ve done in their lives. We all have things we’re not proud of, and having the opportunity to grow from that and to learn and to prove that you are a capable person is a really powerful thing,” Magel said.“Everybody has a chance to change, and instead of you looking at my criminal background, get to know me. Get to see the kind of work I can provide. FORT MYERS, Fla. — A Florida boy who called 911 to report he was hungry and wanted a pizza got a lesson in proper emergency call etiquette — but he also got a pie.The Sanford Police Department said in a Facebook post the hungry grade-schooler called 911 last Friday.Three officers went to the home.The boy's older sister told them they were fine, and her brother had used the phone without her knowledge.The officers explained the 9-1-1 system is only for emergencies. Financial advisors around the country are offering pro bono help to those impacted financially by COVID-19, no strings attached.But despite the historic economic downturn, some advisors say they aren't getting many calls. "'Financial planning' evokes being wealthy, having stocks and bonds. And that's not necessarily the case," said Kristin Pugh, a senior wealth advisor in Georgia. She believes some people are deterred from seeking help because they have misconceptions about financial planning. Regardless of income, anyone with bills to pay and money to manage can benefit from this free help, Pugh said.Also servings as Director of Community Outreach and Pro Bono Planning for the Georgia Financial Planning Association (FPA), Pugh says doing this work is a personal mission for her."In short, growing up poor made it so I have a particular, want or need to help the community," said Pugh. Forgetting to keep your Christmas tree watered could have deadly consequences, according to the National Fire Protection Association. According to the NFPA, nearly 160 house fires per year are sparked by Christmas trees. These fires caused an average of three deaths, 15 injuries, and million in direct property damage annually, the NFPA said. A plurality of Christmas tree fires from 2013 through 2017, roughly 44 percent, were caused by electrical distribution or lighting within the tree. Another 25 percent of Christmas tree fires were from a heat source, such as a candle, being too close to a tree. The NFPA also found that 21 percent of Christmas tree fires were intentionally set. In 2017, the National Institute of Science and Technology released a video showing the fire danger a tree not watered can pose. The video showed that a spark to a dry tree could ignite an entire tree within several seconds, engulfing an entire room seconds later. A watered tree failed to ignite in the same fashion. Although buying an artificial tree likely decreases the risk of a fire, for every three fires sparked by a real Christmas tree, one is caused by an artificial tree.The National Fire Protection Association released Christmas tree fire prevention tips:· Choose a tree with fresh, green needles that do not fall off when touched.· Before placing the tree in the stand, cut 2” from the base of the trunk.· Make sure the tree is at least three feet away from any heat source, like fireplaces, radiators, candles, heat vents or lights.· Make sure the tree is not blocking an exit.· Add water to the tree stand. Be sure to add water daily.· Use lights that have the label of a recognized testing laboratory. Some lights are only for indoor or outdoor use.· Replace any string of lights with worn or broken cords or loose bulb connections. Read manufacturer’s instructions for number of light strands to connect.· Never use lit candles to decorate the tree.· Always turn off Christmas tree lights before leaving home or going to bed. 2047
