CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- A group of parents hosted a rally Monday evening calling on Chula Vista Elementary School District officials to reopen schools for in-person learning. Parents said they want the district to move forward with a phased reopening approach, a plan that was supposed to start on Oct. 26.However, the district halted the repoening plan at the beginning of October, citing concerns about rising COVID-19 cases in two specific ZIP codes -- 91911 and 92154.Parents argued that there is a safe way to go back to in-person learning, but they feel the district isn't ready. CVESD Superintendent Francisco Escobedo said he does want to get children back in the classroom and is hoping cases in those ZIP codes go down so they can reopen by the end of the year. He added that the district is still working with employee associations and labor groups in hopes of coming to an agreement so teachers can have everything they need to safely do their job. 976

CHICAGO, Illinois — People are caught on camera an average of 75 times a day.But there is now some new technology hitting the market that can hide a person's face from some of those."Baby Driver" is the latest Hollywood movie to use crazy fashionable technology to commit crimes like robbing banks. The truth is they may not be that far off. Scott Urban, the creator of Reflectacles, says his product helps bounce light back directly to where it came from.“One of my past clients came up to me and asked me to make him a pair of reflective glasses," Urban said.The glasses don't make a person invisible, but can throw off security cameras. One of his biggest concerns is privacy.“You know if you have this concept that you're being filmed and recorded and listened to everywhere you go, you might limit your own personal freedoms," he said.The glasses reflect light into the camera creating a blown out glow.Our reporter found the glasses work really well when it's dark, but in broad sunlight, not so much.Scott's gear got him in a bit of trouble at the neighborhood bar he goes to often. They asked him to take off his glasses. Katrina Arthur, the manager and fourth generation's family owner of Archie's Iowa & Rockwell Tavern, said, “We want to be sure if anything were to happen and go back and look at our security tapes and be able to identify anybody who may have caused an incident."Our reporters also found reflective glasses aren't the only option out there. The ISHU cloak is made by entrepreneur Saif Siddiqui, who feels strongly about privacy as well.“It's just the option of going invisible," Siddiqui said.He sells anti-paparazzi gear. Siddiqui's clothing does nearly the same thing as the glasses — gives back some privacy.“I find it important to give people the option to not be seen," he said.But these option may be short-lived. Security companies are taking notice of this new technology and working to stay ahead of it.“There are ways to make cameras that can see everybody's face, and I suppose it can be a cat and mouse game or I invest in better and better technology to hide my face."Keith Jentoft, is a video surveillance expert with more than 20 years in the business. He believes this type of tech actually does the opposite of what's intended because it sticks out."You're going to be calling yourself out and calling attention to yourself. If you're spending a lot of money to be private, people want to know why," Jentoft said.Scott Urban knows his gear isn't for everyone but says there's something bigger to consider.“Is it ok for you to tell me that my face must be recorded and analyzed everywhere I go?" CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) — Chula Vista Girl Scout Ana De Almeida Amaral was recently given the National Gold Award, the Girl Scouts' top honor, for her work combating racism in education, according to the organization.“In a time when an increasing number of young people are using their voices to come together and take action, these girls stand out," said GSUSA CEO Sylvia Acevedo. Nine other girl scouts received the honor as well. "They have made an incredible impact in the worlds of STEM, education, agriculture, the environment, civil rights, and beyond."Amaral was recognized for creating the first ethnic studies course at High Tech High School. She developed the course to serve the school's large population of students of color. "Through my first years of high school I saw that the representation of people of color wasn't apparent in our curriculum, in our history classes, or our school clubs," Amaral, now a senior, says. Amaral ran seminars for peers that would lead the course, covering culturally responsive teaching and how to include diverse perspectives in lessons.But Amaral says her project goes deeper than her course. She says the course is really a way to address institutional racism in education and help students bridge that educational gap."Although it's not that our educators today believe those ideas, but it's just the way our education system was founded," Amaral said. "For ethnic studies to be a place for students to share their identities, be connected with one another, and have the resources to feel empowered by their education means students are engaged with school, students are graduating high school, and students are going to college."The class is an elective, student-led course that runs during school hours, focusing on historical oppression, marginalized groups, and cultures. Lessons teach students how to identify injustice historically and in their own lives while empowering them to change it."It's been running for two years. CHICAGO, Ill. – The pandemic has been affecting how Americans rest. Some have experienced better sleep and odd dreams, while others are left exhausted.With no morning commute and nowhere to drop the kids off, the stress of the pandemic coupled with a lack of scheduling anchors can lead to sleepless nights.“They could have difficulty falling asleep or what I'm seeing most commonly is difficulty staying asleep,” said Dr. Cathy Goldstein, an associate professor of neurology specializing in sleep disruption at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.She says being stuck at home with unusual schedules shifts our internal body clocks, known as circadian rhythms, in unhealthy ways.“Now, we don't have to get up and go anywhere. So, I see people push their clocks later and they're falling asleep later at night and then they're sleeping in,” said Goldstein. “And so, the subsequent day, they can't fall asleep.”“Pandemic-induced insomnia” or “COVID-somnia” she says is also being compounded by over consumption of media on laptops, cell phones and tablets.“They also allow us to bring little miniature suns into the sleep period,” said Goldstein.A recent survey from Sleep Standards found that 98% of Americans developed sleep problems post lockdown and 68% feel stress or find it hard to sleep even after the lockdown.According to pharmacy benefits manager Express Scripts, between mid-February and mid-March as the outbreak began ramping up, prescriptions for sleep medications jumped nearly 15% compared to the same time last year.“We have seen an increase in prescriptions for insomnia medications. But we do recommend patients try lifestyle changes or OTC, which are over-the-counter supplements,” said Dr. Jessica Nouhavandi, lead pharmacist and CEO of California-based Honeybee Health.Things you can do to combat “COVID-somnia” include exercising early in the day, setting an alarm to wake up at the same time each day, and disabling the snooze button. One other tip Goldstein recommends is using amber blue blocking lenses to help with screens and energy efficient bulbs that emit blue spectrum light.“So, by putting on those glasses four hours before bedtime, you're getting rid of that circadian disrupting light. So, that's a huge help,” said Goldstein.
