CASA GRANDE, Ariz. – Schools across the nation are having trouble filling teacher jobs – so districts are coming up with unique solutions. The Casa Grande Union High School District has looked overseas to help fill their teacher positions – which led us to Melvin Injosa. “If you ask me to dance I’ll suck, if you ask me to sing I’ll suck more, but if you want me to do science, physics, I’ll pour myself out,” said Melvin Injosa, teacher at Vista Grande High School in Casa Grande, Arizona. He teaches physics and chemistry and moved to Arizona from the Philippines a few years ago. He’s in the U.S. through a J-1 Visa teacher program, which allows him to teach and learn in America for up to five years. Injosa is currently in his fourth year. “It’s the best experience so far, for me,” he said, after moving here with his wife who also teaches at the school. “Many of our math and science jobs are filled by teachers from the Philippines,” said Steve Bebee, Superintendent of the Casa Grande Union High School District. Of the over 200 teachers they oversee, 18 are teaching through the J-1 Visa teacher program. Ten others finished their terms last year. “There is not an abundance of teachers applying in our district and coming our way,” Bebee explained. Arizona, California, Florida, Texas, New Mexico, North Carolina, and South Carolina have some of the highest numbers of J-1 Visa teachers, and that number rises year over year. Arizona had 187 in 2018, while North Carolina had the most with 522 participants, according to the U.S. State Department. But the new approach to hiring qualified teachers hasn’t been a hit with everyone. “Do we cut out jobs for people that are already in the U.S.? And we are not, because if we had those positions we wouldn’t have to look,” Bebee said. Just under 21 percent of teacher jobs in Arizona were still vacant a few weeks into the 2018-2019 school year, accounting for about 1,443 positions, according to a survey of 150 schools by the Arizona Personnel Admin Association completed in August 2019. “For teachers in Arizona, you’re lucky to get one applicant,” said Justin Wing, director of human resources for the Washington Elementary School District. “It hit us pretty hard.” Wing created the report that shows how the lack of teachers applying for open positions has impacted class sizes and the need for long-term substitute teachers over the years. Wing explained that Arizona is top five in highest class sizes across the nation. And the average teacher salary in the state is around ,000 lower than the national average, with Arizona sitting at ,973, according to the Learning Policy Institute in 2018. The combo of high class sizes and low pay has made it difficult to attract qualified educators in a lot of states.“I think a big issue is related to working conditions,” Leanne Abushar said. Abushar is an elementary school teacher in Phoenix, Arizona and the president of Phoenix Elementary Classroom Teachers Association.“Pay, working conditions, benefits, all of those things link back to teacher recruitment and retention,” she said. Abushar and the rest of the association are working on getting a contract in place for better pay, and other demands for teachers. She says many people just aren't applying for teacher jobs because they aren't appealing to applicants. “Everybody has been stuck with trying to find remedies,” Bebee said. "Every district is prioritizing their recruiting efforts differently, because if all of us are doing the same thing, we’re hitting still that same pool,” Wing explained. Which brings us back to Melvin Injosa’a chemistry class. Despite low wages, he currently gets paid more in this country than he would in his own. Harvey Weinstein is currently being treated for a fever and being closely monitored at the correction facility in Western New York where he's serving a 23-year prison sentence for rape and sexual assault, representatives for the disgraced movie mogul said Tuesday. Both his publicist and Weinstein's rep from the New York State Department of Corrections said they could "neither confirm nor deny" that Weinstein has tested positive for COVID-19. "We can confirm that Mr. Weinstein has a fever and is being closely monitored by the excellent medical staff at Wende CF, for which the entire legal defense team is grateful," his reps said in a statement. It was confirmed that Weinstein had initially tested positive for coronavirus back in late March. Weinstein suffers from multiple medical problems, the statement said. "It should come as no surprise that Mr Weinstein has numerous maladies and conditions, including a heart condition, high blood pressure and spinal stenosis. We are working with the NYSDOCCS and the excellent team at Wende CF to ensure Mr. Weinstein receives the proper medical attention he needs." Back when he was first confirmed COVID-19 positive, Weinstein’s lawyers said he was also dealing with the ramifications of unsuccessful back surgery stemming from a car crash last summer and a condition that requires shots in his eyes so he does not go blind.Weinstein was sentenced to 23 years on rape and criminal sex act charges. Officials had said Weinstein faced a minimum of five years in prison and a maximum of 25 years in prison on the first-degree criminal sex act count, and a maximum penalty of four years in prison for third-degree rape.He was found not guilty of three other charges, including two counts of predatory sexual assault, which carried a potential life sentence.The allegations against Weinstein spawned the #MeToo movement. His trial is seen as a landmark moment for the cause.This is not the first time Weinstein has required medical treatment during his sentence. From schools to the economy, and now our democracy, the coronavirus is uprooting nearly all aspects of American’s lives. Several states have postponed elections as a health precaution, and voting advocates are calling on government leaders to prepare for voting system adjustments in case the COVID-19 crisis continues into the November general election. “For a lot of our registrars and election officials, they have been through some processes where they’re planning for emergencies. COVID-19 is adding a whole new layer,” said Kathay Feng. Feng is the executive director of California Common Cause, a non-partisan organization dedicated to making voting more accessible. With 30 states in the network, their election protection hotline is being flooded with calls. “State by state, one of the biggest questions is going to be, what are my alternatives? If I can’t get to my polling place, how can I get my ballot in?” said Feng. The organization is calling on Los Angeles County to send all registered voters a Vote-By-Mail ballot in the November General Election. And a newly proposed bill by Oregon Sen. Ron Wyden (D) would give all Americans the right to vote by mail if 25 percent of states declared an emergency related to the coronavirus. If passed, the measure would provide 0 million to fund the vote-by-mail efforts. However, making that change quickly won’t be easy. “You’ve got to print all the ballots, assemble them, make sure the right ballots are going to right people, and mail millions of ballots to people in Los Angeles alone,” said Feng. Carl Luna, a political science professor at San Diego Mesa College, says it’s an issue Congress must address. “Congress should probably have a national response to provide a big pot of money to every state, to be able to adjust their voting systems to deal with the pandemic, the way we’re doing it for economics and other issues,” said Luna. And for the change to be successful, Luna says states would have to do an aggressive campaign to ensure everyone not only gets a ballot but is reminded to send it back in. “Elections have to happen. Congress could postpone the November election, but by January 20, the president, under the Constitution, isout of office, and you need to have a replacement in place,” said Luna. He says if the November general election is postponed, it would be the first time in American history. “If we can do it during the Civil War, we can do it now, we just need the resolve and funding to do it,” said Luna. Refoundry helps give formerly incarcerated people a second chance. Now they’re giving back in a special way, helping protect people behind bars during the pandemic.Refoundry's mission is giving people a second chance by providing skills and opportunity. The nonprofit, created by Cisco Pinedo and Tommy Safian, trains formerly incarcerated people to repurpose discarded materials into home furnishings. Their program is structured into three stages over the period, starting off with placement in a living wage job ending with mentorship that could lead to business ownership.So far, 10 businesses have started with the help of Refoundry, giving jobs to more than 125 people.Back in 2016, Scripps station WPIX in New York visited Refoundry in the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Now, they’re adding another effort to their outreach as a result of the pandemic and putting the Refoundry onsite program on hiatus during the lockdown."We launched something called ‘Makers Make Masks,’ that enlists formerly incarcerated people that are homebound because of the pandemic to help combat a public health crisis by sewing reusable washable masks for the most vulnerable people in our society the incarcerated and the homeless," explained Safian.The masks are being donated to homeless support services in Los Angeles and at Rikers Island in New York, where more than 850 masks have already been delivered.The Refoundry set up 20 formerly incarcerated workers with sewing machines, pre-cut fabrics, technical support and training with the help of grants and donations.“This allows… people with the opportunity to demonstrate their value,” explained Safian “to themselves and to their community and to society ... it really does mean a lot."Once the pandemic is over, Refoundry plans on launching a second location Los Angeles and moving into a new space at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. “Happened nine times in a five year period,” said Dawnie McNamee, a former hiring manager. Stood up. “We got to the point where we were actually surprised that someone would actually show up on their first day [because] it got to be so frequent,” said Craig Cummings, a former restaurant manager. No show. “You go home and you wonder, what did I miss about this person,” said McNamee Ghosted. We’re not talking about dates. People aren’t showing up to their first day of work. “It’s like dating, right? Well I had coffee with you, I don’t like you, I’m going to block you. And that’s kind of how you feel like if you’re a hiring manager,” said McNamee. McNamee is a former hiring manager and now works for a payroll company in Colorado. She says she sees this all the time. “What I found, especially since the stock market has recovered, and jobs now aren’t as rare as they used to be, is there’s a lot of people out there that’ll come in, nail it on the interview. You’ll go through the hiring process, all the paperwork and then their first day they will not show up.” She’s right. Unemployment is at 3.5 percent, the lowest it’s been since in 50 years. That means some employers can’t find someone to take a job. Searching for a new hire can be a little bit like dating, you never know exactly what you’re going to get, it’s expensive, and they may not even show up. I went to a job fair and asked people looking for work if they’d ever consider doing this to a potential employer. “If I had a job offer in hand that I’d accepted," said Julie Ziobro who's looking for a job. “Absolutely not,” said Nathaniel Diamond, a job seeker. I come from a generation, and I grew up, making phone calls, don’t text,” said Cummings. “I definitely wouldn’t do it without communicating; that’s not fair,” said Ziobro. “Just let them know, like, 'Hey, I got a job that better suits my skill set, and I’m going to take that one instead,'” said Joshua Curry, a job seeker.No one was ready to admit they’d leave an employer hanging out to dry. But it doesn’t mean there are no other signs. “We really want to take a look at their job history to look at, are they a job hopper? Are they moving around every three months or every six months with different companies. To me that would signal someone is always looking for that next best thing,” says Keely Teynor, who runs her own hiring firm. Teynor says there are a few things employers can do, including looking at someone’s job history. “Even in this really tight labor market, the unemployment rate is so low, we kind of have to find this nice balance of having multiple steps in the process to show they’re really invested and interested in this opportunity,” she says.She says that process helps her avoid the dreaded no show on an employee’s first day. McNamee can still remember the sting of being stood up. “People are excited to have new hires come in and be a part of your team," she says. "And so when you have people not show up, leaves a little mud on your face.“I’ve stayed awake quite a few nights wondering about that what could I have done better.” 3127
