The suspect in the deadly terror attack in New York wasn't only a driver for Uber. He also worked for its rival Lyft.Lyft said late Wednesday that Sayfullo Saipov drove for its ride-hailing app in the past but that it deactivated his account as soon as he was identified as a suspect in the attack.Saipov, a 29-year-old from Uzbekistan who was living in New Jersey, has been charged with federal terrorism offenses in connection with Tuesday's attack in Manhattan in which eight people were killed.Uber said Tuesday that Saipov started driving for it in New Jersey just over six months ago, making more than 1,400 trips. It also banned him from its platform after the attack.Lyft didn't provide details on how long Saipov drove for its app or how many trips he made. It's not unusual for drivers to work for both companies.Saipov's case is drawing renewed attention to the background checks that ride-hailing companies carry out on their drivers.Records show Saipov received multiple traffic citations in the past, including failure to equip a motor vehicle carrier with or maintain a required brake system. Both Uber and Lyft said they hadn't come across any complaints about Saipov's safety as a driver for them.New Jersey rules for ride-hailing services like Uber and Lyft require the companies to conduct criminal background checks, which are usually outsourced to specialist firms. Convictions for crimes like reckless driving automatically disqualify a driver.Uber applies different criteria for background checks depending on state regulations. In general, drivers cannot have more than three minor moving violations, such as speeding tickets, in the past three years.Lyft's website says potential drivers are screened for "driving incidents" but doesn't specify what would disqualify them. Both Uber and Lyft say they are in contact with law enforcement authorities over the New York attack."Our thoughts are with those affected by this tragic act," Lyft said. 1999

The two women from Hawaii who say they were lost at sea had an emergency beacon on the ship that was not activated during their roughly five months at sea, a Coast Guard spokeswoman tells CNN.The mariners, Jennifer Appel and Tasha Fuiava, had one EPIRB (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon) on board, which was properly registered," Coast Guard Petty Officer 2nd Class Tara Molle told CNN.The emergency beacon, which is found on many vessels, is used to alert rescue locations around the world in the event of an emergency, "by transmitting a coded message on the 406 MHz distress frequency via satellite and earth stations to the nearest rescue coordination center," according to EPIRB.com. 706

The US Food and Drug Administration pressed forward with its investigation of e-cigarette companies Friday, sending letters to 21 companies in an effort to uncover whether they are marketing products illegally and outside the agency's compliance policy. This latest phase of the investigation addresses more than 40 e-cigarette products and is part of the agency's ongoing efforts to combat e-cigarette use among youth. It also comes less than two weeks after the agency conducted a surprise inspection of e-cigarette maker Juul's corporate headquarters in San Francisco, seizing thousand of documents, many of which relate to its sales and marketing practices."Companies are on notice," FDA Commissioner Dr. Scott Gottlieb said in a statement Friday. "The FDA will not allow the proliferation of e-cigarettes or other tobacco products potentially being marketed illegally and outside of the agency's compliance policy, and we will take swift action when companies are skirting the law."In September, Gottlieb called the increasing teen use of e-cigarettes "an epidemic," adding that teen nicotine use is dangerous to young people's health and brains.Federal law prohibits the sale of e-cigarettes to people under the age of 18, but more than 2 million middle and high school students were current users of e-cigarettes in 2017, according to the FDA. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says it's the most common nicotine product used by middle and high schoolers. Also last month, the FDA requested that five major e-cigarette manufacturers, including Juul, explain how they plan to combat the use of their products by minors. The agency said it was looking into steps to eliminate the sale of flavored products and unveiled a public education campaignabout e-cigarettes.The FDA said it's considering civil and criminal avenues to enforce these regulations, including fines, seizures and injunctions, according to Friday's announcement.CNN reached out to some of the companies that received letters for comment but did not immediately receive a response."We're going to address issues related to the access kids have to e-cigarettes, as well as the youth appeal of these products," Gottlieb said Friday. "We know flavors are one of the principal drivers of the youth appeal of e-cigarettes and we're looking carefully at this."No reasonable person wants to see these products reaching epidemic use among kids," he said. 2500

The state of Massachusetts has ordered that children 6 months of age or older must obtain a flu vaccine by the end of December to attend any daycare, school or college in the state starting in January. The August 20 announcement was met with protest on Sunday. Hundreds held a protest in Boston, demanding the state rescind the order."They are forcing to inject something into our child and we don't agree with it,” protester Mike Megna told WBZ."I've been really stressed out about it. I am thinking of having home schooling until this gets reversed, but I am not going to let them pressure me to get the flu shot,” Jennifer Cordy also told WBZ. Cordy is the mother of 10-year-old student Xavier Cordy. But officials say that the flu vaccine is an important way for public health officials to reduce hospitalizations and deaths, even though the vaccine won’t provide protection from the coronavirus.“Every year, thousands of people of all ages are affected by influenza, leading to many hospitalizations and deaths,” said Dr. Larry Madoff, a medical director with the state's Department of Public Health. “It is more important now than ever to get a flu vaccine because flu symptoms are very similar to those of COVID-19 and preventing the flu will save lives and preserve healthcare resources.”The state is providing exemptions for medical or religious based reasons. Massachusetts is also exempting K-12 homeschoolers as well as college students who are fully off campus and do not attend in-person classes. There is not an exemption for K-12 students who are partaking in virtual learning through their school. 1620

The roars of the crowd will be missing from the Masters this year. Augusta National says it won't have spectators when the Masters is played two weeks before Thanksgiving. The Augusta National Golf Club made the announcement on Wednesday. “Since our initial announcement to postpone the 2020 Masters, we have remained committed to a rescheduled Tournament in November while continually examining how best to host a global sporting event amid this pandemic,” said Fred Ridley, Chairman of Augusta National Golf Club, in a press release. “As we have considered the issues facing us, the health and safety of everyone associated with the Masters always has been our first and most important priority."That means all three majors won't have fans this year. The tournament, which takes in April, was postponed back in March. The Masters was canceled from 1943-45 because of World War II.The silence will be most deafening at the Masters. The tournament is renowned for its roars on the back nine on Sunday. Tiger Woods says when he won last year, it helped to look at leaderboards so that he could have a better understanding of what each cheer meant. The Masters was moved from April to Nov. 12-15 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. 1233
