"We were already selling our own chocolate, we're also selling local food brands, we do that all the time, so really it was just a matter of rearranging our own furniture," said Daniel Youngren, a co-owner of the eatery. Restaurants across San Diego County have been hit hard due to the restrictions, with many either shutting down or offering discounts for takeout. More than 126,000 San Diegans work in the industry, which has seen employees either lose their jobs or have their hours cut.Youngren says Eclipse Chocolate is no exception, with a number of its 20 employees seeing fewer hours and applying for unemployment assistance. Still, he says this allows the restaurant to make up at least a portion of the revenue lost and keep some workers busy, while also fulfilling its mission of getting food to people who are hungry.On Thursday, Eclipse Chocolate had used the tables from its dining room to offer apples, tomatoes, onions, cauliflower, to name a few. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A former executive for an Orange County genetics company pleaded guilty today to a federal conspiracy charge for paying kickbacks to physicians.Donald Joseph Matthews, 50, formerly the vice president of market development for Proove Biosciences, admitted in San Diego federal court to paying doctors at least .5 million to order the company's DNA tests for their patients, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.In total, the U.S. Attorney's Office said Proove billed around million to the Medicare program for the tests -- which the company alleged could determine a patient's risk of drug addiction -- and received around million in reimbursements.Prosecutors said the company claimed the payments were compensation for participation in a clinical research program, but the money was actually "directly tied to the volume of tests that a doctor ordered and whether a doctor continued to order more tests from Proove over time.''In his plea agreement, Matthews admitted that without the financial compensation, ``most doctors were not interested in ordering Proove's tests for their patients.''Doctors who complained about not being paid were told to order more tests, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.The company's Irvine headquarters was raided by federal authorities in 2017.``Our nation's healthcare system cannot tolerate kickbacks to physicians while criminals line their pockets with taxpayer-funded healthcare dollars, particularly in light of our nation's current struggles with the COVID- 19 pandemic,'' said Acting Special Agent in Charge Omer Meisel of the FBI's San Diego Division.Matthews is scheduled to be sentenced Oct. 26. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A former San Diego State University student accused of setting a string of fires around the campus over the course of three days was charged with a dozen felony counts Wednesday, including burglary, arson and vandalism. Madelyn Delarosa, 19, was taken into custody Saturday morning, following four fires she's suspected of setting to apartments and vehicles across campus between March 13-16. No injuries were reported in connection with the fires, all of which occurred a few blocks south of Viejas Arena. However, Deputy District Attorney Rikole Santin noted that one of the fires was ignited in an occupied apartment, inside which a person was sleeping. Santin said the heat from the flames caused a window to shatter and ``rain glass and fire'' upon the victim, who was asleep just below the window. A suspected motive for the spree was unknown, as was the reason Delarosa was no longer a student at the campus. (KGTV) - Local activists are planning a protest Monday after multiple reports saying fans of San Clemente High School’s football team allegedly shouted racist slurs at students of San Diego’s Lincoln High School at a football game Friday night in Orange County.The NAACP San Diego said that multiple spectators from the home team heckled the Lincoln High players and cheer squad, repeatedly using racial slurs including the "n-word.""Furthermore, cheer squad members were racially harassed in restrooms, again including the 'n-word.' This harassment came not only from high-school-age youth, but also from adult fans,” Clovis Honoré, president of the NAACP San Diego Branch wrote in a letter to San Clemente High School and district officials. “We are shocked and disgusted that such blatant racism would occur in 2019 at an athletic contest for high school students,” said Honoré.
