NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The National Museum of African American Music is finally set to open next year.The grand opening was delayed this summer due to several pandemic setbacks, but a new date has been set for January 18, which is Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Museum President and CEO Henry Hicks says it's going to be a very special day as NMAAM has been in the works for 22 years. Hicks says museum leaders were excited to open in the summer of this year, but the pandemic made it tough. Construction material was delayed, and they had to implement social distancing requirements for crews working.There are still some finishing touches being made on the museum but overall it’s ready for Nashvillians and tourists alike. Hicks says the museum will be a place that connects all generations and all walks of life through music.“Nashville is Music City and that really got its start with the Fisk Jubilee Singers. It evolved through an era of R&B and jazz being very prominent in the city and of course country music and I think the city has a job of embracing that country or Music City heritage," said Hicks. "This museum just really builds upon that.”NMAAM members will be the first ones to get access, but the following weekend, it will open to the general public. NASCAR has banned the Confederate flag from all events and properties. NASCAR says the Confederate flag “runs contrary to our commitment to providing a welcoming and inclusive environment for all fans, our competitors and our industry.” Former chairman Brian France in 2015 tried to ban the flying of Confederate flags at race tracks, a proposal too broad to enforce and one that angered NASCAR’s core Southern-based fan base.“The presence of the confederate flag at NASCAR events runs contrary to our commitment to providing a welcoming and inclusive environment for all fans, our competitors and our industry. Bringing people together around a love for racing and the community that it creates is what makes our fans and sport special," NASCAR said in a statement. More than 200 children from separated undocumented immigrant families remain in US custody, officials said in a court filing Monday night.Most of the 245 children in custody have parents who were removed from the United States -- 175 children, according to the latest government tally.Of those, only 18 children are currently in the pipeline to reunite with their parents in their countries of origin, according to court documents. Deported parents of 125 kids in custody have said they don't want their children to be returned to the countries of origin. And there are 32 children in government custody for whom the American Civil Liberties Union has not yet provided notice of whether parents want to reunify or decline reunification, officials said.An additional approximately 70 children who remain in custody include 27 whose parents are in the US but have chosen not to be reunified with their children, as well as 26 whose parents have been deemed unfit to be reunified. That tally also includes 13 children the US government is working to discharge who have parents in the US. The government says three other children can't be reunited with parents who are in the US at this time because there are red flags for safety or a parent is in criminal detention.The new numbers appeared in the latest federal court filing in the ACLU class action case over family separations. They come as the Trump administration considers a new pilot program that could result in the separations of kids and parents once again.A status hearing in the family separations case is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon.In June, US District Judge Dana Sabraw ordered the government to reunite most of the families it had divided, including parents and children who had been separated as a result of the government's now-reversed "zero tolerance" policy at the border and some separations that occurred before that policy was put in place.Since then, 2,070 children have been discharged from government custody and reunited with parents, according to Monday's court filing.And so far, 79 of those children have been reunited with parents in their countries of origin. (KGTV) -- Police in National City are investigating after a man was shot and killed near a 7-Eleven early Sunday morning. Police responded to the 100 block of North Highland Avenue just before 5 a.m. after receiving reports of gunshots in the area.After arriving, police found a 55-year-old man who had been shot. MONT BELVIEU, Texas — A Texas judge has ruled a school district’s hair policy is discriminatory after two Black students were suspended for their dreadlocks. According to KTRK-TV, the decision from the judge for the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas came late Monday.The policy was at the center of controversy after a senior at Barbers Hill High School was suspended in January. District officials said it wasn’t about race or that dreadlocks weren’t allowed, just that his in particular were too long. The student was told he could not return to school or walk at graduation unless he cut his hair. He argued that his dreadlocks were part of his Trinidadian heritage.He and another student filed grievances on Jan. 27, followed by a lawsuit.
