SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A shortage of labor is creating big problems for San Diego farmers. According to the San Diego Farm Bureau, the slowing workforce is expected to impact local farmers and the price we pay at the grocery store. The bureau says the problem stems from an aging work force, the lack of an easy-to-navigate visa program, and the cost of living in San Diego County. There is a visa program available, but for San Diego’s smaller farmers, the process is complicated and expensive. Created in 1986, the H-2A visa was designed to help understaffed farmers hire foreign workers. The problem? The visa program requires farmers to pay its H-2A employees a set minimum wage, .92 per-hour in California. Farmers are also required to provide housing, food and transportation to H-2A workers. California isn’t alone, other states like Idaho are also struggling to find help.According to an Idaho newspaper – The Post Register, a recent migrant shortage and costs associated with the program are forcing some farms out of business. Although times are tough for farmers in San Diego, the bureau says there is a solution – creating a boiled down visa program that simplifies things for farmers and the workers they need. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A woman leaving a Rancho Pe?asquitos car wash pressed the gas pedal instead of the brake, sending her car into a restaurant Friday, a photographer at the scene told 10News. The crash happened at Genie Car Wash at 9821 Carmel Mountain Road just after 1 p.m. The woman drove her Ford SUV out of the car wash and hit five vehicles being dried by their owners. Eventually, the woman crashed into a support beam of the Sushi Hana Restaurant, coming to a stop. Everyone inside the restaurant was evacuated, the OnScene photographer reported. No one was injured in the crash. 595

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A search was underway Friday for eight service members who disappeared in the waters off San Clemente Island after a training exercise involving an amphibious assault vehicle (AAV).One Marine died following the training accident and two were in critical condition at a hospital.The accident is the third time in less than 10 years that someone has been injured or died in an AAV during training. Colonel with a background in intelligence and amphibious reconnaissance, says one of the most difficult operations in the military is amphibious operations."There is an inherent danger because every once in a while those things will take on water and if they do you've got a lot of marines trapped in a vehicle and it's going to be very difficult to get everyone out safely," Kempfer said.In 2017, 15 Marines were injured during a training exercise when an AAV caught fire. In 2011, a Marine was killed when an AAV sank off the coast near Camp Pendleton."It does happen, that when you go into the water things will leak. There's hatches all over the vehicle on top, in back the crew has hatches," Kempfer says.Injuries during training exercises aren't specific to amphibious assault vehicles. In 2015, one Marine was killed and 18 others were injured in a single-vehicle rollover crash.Kemper says they are horrific events when they happen."We train like we fight an obviously like its very nature the armed forces is a very dangerous business that's what we do," said Kemper. 1721

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A University of San Diego professor has been suspended from campus over alleged misconduct, the university confirmed to 10News.The professor's behavior reportedly violated the university's policy and "is antithetical to our mission and values," the university said in part. The professor was not named.USD officials are currently investigating the incident. The school said in a statement:"We are in the process of investigating the complaint. Our commitment to protecting employee privacy restricts our ability to share names or details of the incident. The professor has been suspended and removed from campus and is not permitted to return to campus or participate in any USD-related off-campus events while we conduct our investigation and initiate next steps."The nature of the professor's alleged misconduct was not detailed. 858

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Airports across the nation saw more than 6 million travelers Thanksgiving weekend, concerning medical professionals.Dr. Davey Smith, Chief of Infectious Diseases at UC San Diego, is worried those who gathered with people outside their household will contract the coronavirus."The infection will go on to spread to their household members, other people they work with, etc., so we'll see more cases on top of more cases," Smith said.San Diego has been in the middle of a surge, with climbing coronavirus cases steeper than we saw in July. Smith said Thanksgiving gatherings could bring a spike on top of it all."It gets actually a little bit worse, so heading into Christmas, we can start seeing our cases rise, and Christmas is an even longer holiday with more opportunities for gathering and if they're not going to be socially distancing I can just see how this piles on," Smith said.Just up the freeway, Los Angeles will see more restrictions Monday, limiting retail capacities, closing playgrounds and prohibiting any gatherings with those outside your household."They might be telling us what's going to happen to us soon. I hope that's not the case, but I do worry they are the canary in the coal mine," he said.The density of cases makes it even more important to take precautions like wearing a mask, washing your hands and keeping your distance. Smith also advises staying home if you can."The more it's circulating in the community, means the more risk there is for even those who are doing "the right thing" to still get it," he said.Smith said the light at the end of the tunnel is coming."We're also better at treating it than we were back in April, May, June, July. We're also doing better about having some treatments that can keep people out of the hospital," he said.A vaccine is also on it's way, planned to be administered in the coming weeks to front line workers. 1911
