SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — She's just 5-years-old, but Faith Perkins is now a published author.Faith and her mother Neka wrote the book 'Faith and Trinity the Unicorn', inspired by the loss of Trinity, Faith's older sister."My husband and I lost Trinity prematurely at 24 weeks in May 2012, of course, that was a devastation, it hurt us, but our faith prompted us to try again, and that's when Faith was born," said Neka. In the book, Faith travels the world with her sister Trinity, who is a unicorn. Faith explains how she and her mother wrote the book together, "What we would do is me and her would sit down, and she would tell me what it would be like if we were playing with each other and whatever I would tell her she would write down on a piece of paper."Neka and Faith hope the book will help others coping with loss. "I hope to inspire so many other individuals to talk about it, it's not easy, it's painful," said Neka. But Neka says writing the book with Faith has helped her heal and find some closure. "I can only imagine what life would have been like with her here, so this allows us to keep the hope alive," said Neka. For Faith, getting the book published is only the beginning. She's using the proceeds to help the homeless, help kids with field trip expenses, and to donate gifts to local NICU’s.You can purchase the book at Barnes & Noble stores in San Diego, as well as on the Barnes & Noble website. The book is also available on Amazon Kindle. 1471

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Starting Wednesday, cruise ships will return to the San Diego Embarcadero — but they will not be picking up any customers for months to come. Experts say the longer the vessels stay, the harder it is for the cruise industry to bounce back. The Holland America Koningsdam returned to the Port of San Diego Wednesday morning. It is one of five cruise ships scheduled to dock at the Embarcadero for fuel and supplies. But not to pick up guests. The vessels include:Holland America Koningsdam – December 23Princess Cruises Emerald Princess – December 24 (leaves for Los Angeles after San Diego visit)Holland America Westerdam – December 28Holland America Zuiderdam – January 8Holland America Noordam – January 11"Their revenues compared to say the same time last year are literally down 99%," financial advisor Dennis Brewster said.According to the Port of San Diego, there have been 119 canceled cruises since March and a loss of 0 million in regional economic activity. Unlike airlines and restaurants, which are two other industries hard hit by the pandemic, Brewster says cruises have no Plan B."Their revenues literally went to zero," Brewster said. "I mean, the others were really bad too, but you can't do a cruise ship on a takeout or drive-through."The Port says each cruise line must follow the CDC's "Framework for Conditional Sailing Order" before they can set sail. The first phase is to test and safeguard the crew. The second is a simulated voyage where the ships must prove their ability to mitigate COVID-19 risk. After that, they can slowly reintroduce passengers on their voyages. In the meantime, the ships and crews will stay put. But will the companies be able to stay afloat?"Even if the CDC and other organizations say, 'January one, you can resume your operations,' how many people would get on today?" Brewster asked. The hope is that travel will be on everyone's radar once it shifts away from the coronavirus."I think all of us have spent enough time at home the last nine months to last the next nine years," Brewster said. "So that's a good thing for the industry. There is going to be quite a bit of pent-up demand."According to the Port of San Diego, Holland America has some cruises scheduled to depart in April and May. However, they will only be able to set sail if they get their certifications from the CDC. 2367

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Small businesses trying to stay afloat amid coronavirus restrictions can apply for up to million in forgivable low-interest loans to help them get by. The Federal Small Business Administration has opened its application site for businesses with fewer than 500 employees to apply for the loans, which would have an interest rate of no more than 4 percent. The loans are part of the stimulus package Congress and the President authorized last week. They are meant to help small businesses maintain payroll and meet essential obligations like rent, mortgages and utilities at a time social distancing has eliminated most consumer spending. RELATED: Coronavirus aid: How to help your neighborsIf an employer uses the money as intended, the government says it will forgive the loans."Forgiveness is based on the employer maintaining or quickly rehiring employees and maintaining salary levels," according to the Small Business Administration. "Forgiveness will be reduced if full-time headcount declines, or if salaries and wages decrease."Kelly DuFord Williams, a managing partner at Slate Law Group, says this is an unprecedented opportunity for small businesses, given the low interest loan offer and six months of deferred payments. RELATED: WE'RE OPEN SAN DIEGO: Search open businesses"Small businesses employ a lot of people, especially in San Diego, with such a big entrepreneur community, and the last thing they want is all of us turning off our lights and doing mass layoffs just because of temporary circumstances," Williams said. Jennifer Byard, who owns Communal Coffee in North Park and South Park, said her sales have dropped 75 percent and that she has had to reduce her employees from 22 to eight. Byard plans to take out at least 0,000 to make it through.RELATED: IRS: Distribution of economic impact payments will begin in the next three weeks"I think it's really important for me to have some backup funds right now to be able to reopen, to be able to keep my employees, to pay them more," said Byard, whose shop is now doing takeout only during the day while offering pizza and salad in the evening.
