A bodyguard for Las Vegas resident and champion boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. was shot on Monday in Atlanta, according to multiple reports.A police spokesman told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that it appears that Mayweather's three-vehicle convoy was targeted. Mayweather was not injured in the shooting. The bodyguard, Gregory La Rosa, was shot in the leg. He was treated at a hospital in Atlanta and released. La Rosa has worked for Mayweather since 2014.Mayweather and his group was traveling from a club to a luxury hotel around 2 a.m. Monday when another vehicle pulled alongside and opened fire.Mayweather is in Atlanta to promote his Showtime-televised triplehead in Las Vegas on Saturday night. A little girl with a passion for writing letters is now becoming a published author.Emerson Weber went viral earlier this year when her dad tweeted her story.Emerson had about a dozen pen-pals at the time. She writes them letters filled with jokes and stories, and she always decorates the envelopes.“It's like a little piece of art that someone's going to find in their mailbox, and I get my inspiration from everywhere,” said Weber, author of “Sincerely, Emerson.”Weber wanted to thank her mail carrier for always taking all her letters, so she wrote him too. Her mail carrier then shared that letter with his supervisor at work, who shared it regionally, and the responses poured in. Two boxes full of letters from postal workers arrived.Some sent back stamps or asked her to send a letter to more people in their family.Many postal workers said they felt seen for the first time in a long time, and she wrote back to all of them.“In this time that's a little crazy, they're still out there doing their job, so we can stay connected to our pen pals and people we love,” said Weber.After her story spread online, even more people from all over started writing Weber.She hopes when people read her book, they realize how one act of kindness can spread.“And I also hope they take the time to write a letter because people really appreciate that,” she said. “Your grandparents, your friends, anyone would really love to get a letter from you and it's just so meaningful.”Her picture book based on the viral story, “Sincerely Emerson,” comes out next week. 1562

A changing of the seasons has ushered in a change of a different kind for day cares across the country.Father Stephen Lundrigan has overseen Annunciation Parish for the last three years. For the last three decades, the church here has run The Caring Place, a day care that has seen generations of children come through.“It’s developed a tremendous amount of trust with the families that have sent their children there,” he said. “That’s evidence by children who have gone there end up sending their children.”But in two weeks, the playgrounds at The Caring Place will no longer be filled with kids, because the day care is closing.Day cares across the country are facing similar hardships.Most had to shut down during the spring. Unlike schools, they couldn’t provide care virtually. Day cares that have reopened have seen enrollment numbers plummet, as many parents who are working from home and don’t need child care.With nearly 18 million Americans also out of work, some families simply can’t afford daycare anymore.“I’s not just about business. If we could run it at a ,000 loss, we would, but we can’t,” said Father Lundrigan.By some estimates, a staggering 50 percent of child care providers throughout the country could close permanently by the end of the year.Capacity limits due to COVID-19 safety procedures have limited the total number of kids many places can care for. U.S. day cares also lack any kind of public funding.“Even before the pandemic, parents were struggling to afford and find child care, and this may make that worse,” said Elizabeth Davis, an economist with the University of Minnesota.Davis says without some kind of federal aid, an untold number of day cares nationwide will permanently close, and it could have long-term impacts on families and the economy.“It’s shown us how important child care is to our modern economy and it’s part of the infrastructure, and so yes, this is a sector that needs some of that support,” Davis explained.It’s just another layer of uncertainty as families try to navigate the pandemic. 2062

A Detroit police officer who was recorded punching a naked woman at a Detroit hospital has been suspended with pay pending an investigation.According to Detroit Police Chief James Craig, the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office has also started a criminal investigation into the officer's use of force.The incident started with a call around 6:45 p.m. local time on Wednesday. When officers arrived, they saw a naked woman on the street. Officers put her in a police car and took her to Detroit Receiving Hospital. According to Craig, the woman was not agitated during the entire ride to the hospital, and officers were able to cover her up. Craig said the officers did not handcuff her.Once at the hospital, the woman threatened hospital staff and security staff, spit on several employees, bit a security officer twice and tried to bite another police officer.Craig says an officer struck the woman several times, ignoring the Detroit Police Department's de-escalation tactics."The suspect had her back turned but the officer continued to punch," Craig said. "We have grave concerns for the officer's action."The department is investigating the incident, on top of the prosecutor's office, and they are in the process of downloading body camera videos. According to Craig, the officer is an 18-year veteran of the force, is a corporal, and has a good record. He hasn't had a complaint since 2015 and not does not have a "category one use of force incident"— when a use of force incident results in injury.The woman was treated for minor injuries at the hospital and had some minor contusions but is in stable condition.Officers have interviewed several hospital staff, but are in the process of trying to locate the person who took the video showing the use of force.According to Craig, the officer did undergo their mental health and emotional survival training twice in 2016 and once in 2015. He said the department has "above average" training when it comes to people who have a mental illness. 2018

A Clarksville teacher was charged with assault after an incident with a student during a field trip to Nashville was reported to police.According to an affidavit from Metro Nashville Police, Robert Neitzke – a teacher at Clarksville Academy – was arrested after he allegedly grabbed a student by his throat and pushed him against a wall.The alleged incident happened on March 3 while a group of students were staying at the Renaissance Hotel in Nashville. The police report said that Neitzke was the only adult on the trip.Around 11 p.m., Neitzke was reportedly trying to give students instructions for the next day and had to stop several times to get their attention. That’s when one of the students asked, “can we hurry this up,” and Neitzke allegedly approached the student and started to grab him. Police said Neitzke then said “it would be funny if your head hit the wall” before backing up and then grabbing the student by the neck before pushing him against the wall.The student told officers that he was able to say "get off me" and push him back. He told police that while he had no visible injuries, the squeezing of his neck caused “some discomfort.”Several other students were interviewed and all gave a very similar account of the incident, according to the report.
