SPRING VALLEY, Calif. "That way we can get everything straightened up, cleaned up try to put things back."Elliott's family is one of 140 families the Red Cross helped over the last week. Evacuees were offered food, first aid, hotel rooms and more.Red Cross Regional CEO Shawn Mahoney said they served 1,200 meals on Wednesday alone. This was Elliott's first time having to evacuate, and he told ABC 10News, "With the dogs and my mother-in-law visiting and all of our stuff, we thought we should evacuate just to be on the safe side.”Elliott checked on his home Tuesday to make sure it hadn't been damaged in the fire. He said he'll have to clean out the refrigerator, but that's the only issue. Many others weren't as lucky.Cal Fire said 30 homes and 29 other buildings were destroyed in the fire. As the Valley Fire continues to burn, some areas are still under evacuation orders or warnings. The Red Cross says they will keep the shelters open as long as they're needed. 1186

Shante Wilkerson bought her first used phone in 2016, and she’ll never go back to buying new.“I can’t justify it financially,” she says. “If a new phone isn’t free, I don’t get it.”But carriers no longer hand out free phones in exchange for a two-year contract. Instead, customers now pay the full retail price — anywhere from 0 to ,000 for the latest smartphone — in monthly installments over 18 to 24 months. You’re not locked into a contract like before, but you still need to pay the remaining balance on your phone if you cancel your service. That’s a lot of money. SORRENTO VALLEY (KGTV): An 11-year old volunteer is proving that age doesn't matter when it comes to helping the hungry.Aiden Gruby has been volunteering at Feeding San Diego since he was six. His parents brought him as part of a family activity. He was hooked immediately."I think it’s really great. I love that feeling of helping people," he says.He loved it so much that his family started coming every week. When Aiden turned 10, Feeding San Diego asked him to become a team leader.Typically, the organization waits until people are 13 before they can take a leadership role.As a leader, Aiden helps with orientation and rules. He also directs volunteers as they sort food."I’m just so proud of him wanting to give back to our community," says mom Janessa Gruby. "There are kids who would rather spend their weekend playing sports, or playing video games, and he has asked us to come every weekend."Aiden says his favorite part of the job is "reclamation," which is the process of checking all incoming food for package integrity, expiration date and then sorting it by category. He has no plans to slow down any time soon."I think it’s really good to help people in need of food," he says. "These are people who have everyday lives and work like full-time jobs but can’t get enough food."If you want to help Feeding San Diego, click here to donate to 10News' Month of a Million Meals. There is also a telethon planned for Giving Tuesday (November 27) from 4-7 pm. Every dollar donated will buy four meals for a family in need. 1543
