ISTANBUL, Turney — According to two sources, the Saudis are preparing a report that will acknowledge that Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi's death was the result of an interrogation that went wrong, one that was intended to lead to his abduction from Turkey. One source says the report will likely conclude that the operation was carried out without clearance and transparency and that those involved will be held responsible. One of the sources acknowledged that the report is still being prepared and cautioned that things could change. The Washington Post columnist was last seen in public when he entered the Saudi consulate in Istanbul in Turkey on October 2. Previously, Saudi authorities had maintained Khashoggi left the consulate the same afternoon of his visit, but provided no evidence to support the claim. Khashoggi's fiancée, Hatice Cengiz, who was waiting outside the consulate, says she did not see him re-emerge. 934
In most states, it is illegal to sell or give tobacco products to someone who is 18 years old or younger. But many are increasing the legal age to 21 years old.Cincinnati, Ohio just became the 16th city in that state to do so. The state's minimum age is 18. (There is no minimum age at which someone in Ohio may legally use tobacco products.)Minimum ages for purchasing tobacco have been set at the state level dating all the way back to the late 1800s.Increasing the legal age is an effort to reduce habitual smoking among young people. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says most long-term tobacco use begins when a smoker is an adolescent, and nearly 90 percent of smokers have their first cigarette by age 18. 742

It has been a political dream for Democrats for years: Turning Texas, and its 38 Electoral College votes, blue. Could 2020 be the year that such a progressive dream becomes a reality?THE POLLSPolls suggest a close race. Real Clear Politics, which averages recent polls, puts President Donald Trump up by just 0.2% in Texas. A CBS News poll from early July found presumptive Democratic Nominee Joe Biden trailing by just 1 point in the state. Trump won Texas by more than 800,000 votes in 2016. RECENT MOVESOn Monday, Biden announced the hiring of six staffers in the state, including senior advisers, a state director and a communications director. Not every state has a team in place, so the move suggests Team Biden believes it can force Trump to campaign more in Texas. Biden has also launched digital ads in recent days commemorating the Walmart shooting in El Paso one year ago. Trump, for his part, visited Texas last week and tweeted about Texas several times. 979

It’s the classic vision of Election Day – head to your polling place, check in and vote. But this year, the tradition at the base of our democracy will look very different. Ballots will arrive in the mail for more people than ever due to the pandemic. So, how does the process work? It’s streamlined and closely monitored. You, a voter, get your ballot in the mail. You fill it out and seal it in the provided envelope. It’s crucial you don’t forget to sign in the designated area. From there, you can add postage and drop it in the mail. Some cities have ballot drop boxes that go directly to the county with no stamp or post office needed.Once the state has your ballot, it goes through different stations where independent workers open the envelope, scan the ballot, and check to make sure everything is valid. That process is often open for public viewing, either in-person or streaming online. While that’s meant to provide some transparency, mail-in voting is new to millions of people and some worry it’s not safe and secure. The head of the Federal Election Commission recently tried to put worries at bay. She is quoted as saying “there’s simply no basis for the conspiracy theory that voting by mail causes fraud.”And the statistics back that statement up. The Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank, found 143 voter fraud convictions out of 250 million mail-in ballots cast since 2000. That works out to about eight cases per year, nationwide. If you are voting by mail, there are three easy ways to make sure your ballot counts.1. Fill it out properly. Don’t go outside the lines or make any stray markings on the ballot.2. Sign your envelope and make sure the signature matches what you have on file.3. And vote early. Experts say it’s the best way to make sure your vote counts. 1801
