SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County's unadjusted unemployment rate fell in September with multiple industries in the county showing employment increases, the California Employment Development Department announced Friday.San Diego County's overall unemployment rate fell two-10ths of a percent from 3.6 percent in August to 3.4 percent in September. The September rate was also lower than the county's unemployment rate one year ago, when it sat at 3.7 percent.Total nonfarm employment increased in September compared with August by 700 jobs while agricultural employment increased by 100 jobs. Nonfarm employment now sits at 1,479,500.Government and educational and health services jobs all saw month-over-month increases in employment, largely due to the end of summer recesses and breaks according to the EDD. Local and federal government jobs increased by 5,100 in the county while educational and health services jobs increased by a total of 1,600.The leisure and hospitality industry saw the biggest decline in month-over-month job numbers, losing 2,000 jobs due to the end of summer recesses and breaks. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County's unadjusted unemployment rate dipped to 3.5 percent in February, with both farm and nonfarm employment showing gains, the California Employment Development Department announced Friday.The county's adjusted unemployment rate sat at 3.8 percent in January, its highest point since the third quarter of 2017. February's unadjusted rate is the same as its revised 2018 unemployment rate, according to the EDD.Nonfarm industries added 9,700 jobs between January and February, with total nonfarm employment increasing from 1,480,100 to 1,489,800. Total farm jobs increased by 400 from 8,100 in January to 8,500 last month.Multiple nonfarm industries showed job gains in the thousands. The professional and business services industry increased by 4,100 jobs, the most of any industry in the county. The trade, transportation and utilities industry decreased the most of any in the county, falling by 2,600 jobs.Year-over-year nonfarm employment increased by 19,900 jobs, from 1,469,900 in February 2018 to 1,489,800 last month. The educational and health services industry showed the largest year-over-year employment gains at 6,900, pacing multiple industries that showed yearly job gains of more than 3,000.Like the county's month-over-month job market, the trade, transportation and utilities industry had the largest year-over-year decrease in job numbers, falling by the same number of jobs from 223,600 in February 2018 to 221,000 last month. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego-based medical technology company Phamatech and its CEO have agreed to pay more than million to resolve allegations that they submitted false claims to Medicare and received government reimbursements for unnecessary lab testing, the U.S. Attorney's Office said Friday.Prosecutors allege the company paid kickbacks to a medical clinic, which in return ordered Phamatech lab testing for its patients enrolled in Medicare.Over the course of about two years, Phamatech, which manufactures diagnostic devices and provides lab testing services such as drug and alcohol tests, paid a per-specimen fee to Imperial Valley Wellness in exchange for referrals of urine samples from Medicare beneficiaries, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.Many of the samples referred to Phamatech were not necessary and thus ineligible for Medicare reimbursement, prosecutors said.The company, along with its CEO and founder Tuan Pham, agreed to pay ,043,484 to settle allegations that Phamatech violated the federal Anti- Kickback Statute and the False Claims Act.The U.S. Attorney's Office said the allegations were originally brought in a lawsuit filed by former Phamatech employee John Polanco, who will receive 7,392 from the settlement proceeds. 1273

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego Humane Society officials reached out to the public Monday for help in finding whoever abandoned a gravely malnourished dog in Pacific Beach last week.The dog, a 3-year-old shepherd mix, was abandoned near Campland on the Bay, off Pacific Beach Drive, on or around last Monday, according to the San Diego County Humane Society. A good Samaritan found the "severely emaciated" dog Tuesday afternoon by the Kendall-Frost Mission Bay Marsh Reserve, near Pacific Beach Drive and Olney Street.The good Samaritan immediately sought veterinary care for the dog, but it was euthanized because of failing organs, according to the humane society. Veterinarians determined the dog was in such a deteriorated state that he could not have made it by himself to the location he was found -- meaning he was abandoned there."This is absolutely heartbreaking and completely unnecessary," said Humane Law Enforcement Chief Bill Ganley. "The necropsy revealed socks, a washcloth and a stuffed animal inside this dog's stomach. San Diego Humane Society is here to help, and to learn this poor dog was left to die in this state just a few miles from our doorstep is unfathomable."Anyone who needs help caring for their animal can contact the San Diego Humane Society. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego City Council received a handful of presentations Tuesday intended to help the city address homelessness as well as the lack of transitional and permanent affordable housing.Entities presenting to the council included the Regional Task Force on the Homeless, San Diego County, Mayor Kevin Faulconer's office, the San Diego Housing Commission, San Diego State University's Institute for Public Health and the council's Select Committee on Homelessness.Representatives from each office discussed challenges and successes fighting homelessness in San Diego last year.
