DEL MAR, Calif. (KGTV) — A North County photographer captured five great white sharks swimming about 50 yards off the coast of Del Mar on Thursday.Jedd Wasson, of Del Mar, said he was on the lookout for the sharks as he flew his drone in the area. To his surprise, he not only spotted one, but in total, five juvenile great white sharks calmly gliding through the waters just offshore."So I was actually purposely finding them because I'd been hearing reports of them in Del Mar around 11th Street," Wasson told ABC 10News reporter Steve Smith. "I was surprised at how many there were. I was expecting just a couple but sometimes I would just follow it on the screen and then another one would appear in the frame. I'm like, 'Oh wow, there is quite a lot of sharks here.'"The sharks appeared to be about 8-feet long, Wasson said."I've seen one myself while I was paddleboarding so I can approximate the size, but usually the juveniles tend to come in closer to shore which is what I saw from the drone," Wasson said.Expert Ralph Collier, of the Shark Research Institute, confirmed the sharks appeared to be juvenile great white sharks. Collier added that, before swimmers get too worried, the clarity in the water should help the sharks better distinguish between person or prey. But swimmers should still be cautious."The one I saw was just cruising along the reef then it darted away, so I'm not concerned it's out to get me. I mean, it's their home, we're just in it so I wouldn't worry too much about them but you can always be cautious," Wasson said.While Wasson says he contacted Del Mar Lifeguards about the sightings, lifeguards said there were no posted warnings Friday. 1687

DETROIT — A 12-year-old girl takes a challenge and a dare that could have cost her life.It’s called the "fire challenge." Young people pour flammable liquids on their bodies and set themselves on fire.Brandi Owens says her 12-year-old daughter Timiyah Landers did the challenge with her friends last Friday.She ended up engulfed in flames. Brandi and her fiance extinguished the blaze from her baby girl and rushed her to the hospital.Timiyah is now at Children’s Hospital with second and third-degree burns over 49 percent of her body. Her mom says kids find these dangerously “outrageous” challenges on social media and Youtube. She is angry and has a message for those behind the sites that post these videos.“They need to delete this mess," Owens said fighting back tears. "It should be censored. That’s nothing that a kid should come across. I could have lost my baby, by the grace of God she’s alive. If I wasn’t home, I would have walked in to my baby dead."Owens says Timiyah knew better. Delta gained hurricane strength Monday evening, packing top winds of 80 MPH as of 11 p.m. ET as it churns in the Caribbean Sea, heading north. The rapidly-strengthening tropical storm currently in the Caribbean Sea is moving north, and could strike the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico as a major hurricane on Wednesday.While the Yucatan Peninsula could be in the path of Delta, there is growing concern for the Gulf Coast. The National Hurricane Center has areas from Louisiana to the western tip of the Florida panhandle in the path of Delta. The tropical storm is expected to come ashore on Friday as a hurricane. Delta became the 25th named storm on Monday in what has been an extremely active 2020 Atlantic hurricane season.Louisiana has taken the brunt of the impact of the 2020 Hurricane season. Hurricanes Marco and Laura have already made landfall in the state, causing inland flooding and significant damage along the coast. Hurricane Sally also did significant damage nearby Gulf Shores, Alabama, when it made landfall in September.A second tropical storm, Gamma, is currently churning in the Gulf of Mexico.
