More than one in three Americans have delayed a life event or financial milestone because of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a new survey.Bankrate surveyed about 2,500 Americans in late June. They found 36 percent of participants admitted they have delayed getting married, having a child, buying a home, retiring or another major financial life step.Of those who delayed buying a home, they expect the delay to last six months or longer. Of those delaying buying or leasing a car, 48 percent said their decision could be delayed 6 months or longer.This data matches other financial and job market indicators that the country is in a recession and a rebound could take time.In the survey: 11.6 percent said they are delaying finding a new job, 11.3 percent are delaying buying or leasing a new car, 8.6 percent are delaying buying a home, 7.1 percent are delaying furthering their education, 4.8 percent are delaying having children, 4.5 percent are delaying getting married and 4.5 percent are delaying retirement.As for how the respondents’ situation was since the pandemic started, 29 percent said their financial situation has worsened since the beginning of the year. 1184

But for the 30 million struggling with eating disorders, that stress can make them especially vulnerable.Mental health experts say as social distancing enters its fourth month, they’ve seen a dramatic spike in people seeking assistance. The good news, they say, is that there is help.Growing up in a conservative south Texas family, Eric Dorsa says not fitting a stereotypical masculine identity drove him into a dangerous relationship with food.“I developed an eating disorder as a way to cope with emotions and thoughts and feelings about myself that I couldn't express as a child,” said Dorsa.After 13 years of recovery, it’s still a battle.“It was the hardest thing I've ever done,” said Dorsa. “It is like a giant car crash going off in the middle of your life and you have no choice but to deal with it.”Dr. Ellen Astrachan-Fletcher is the clinical director of the Eating Recovery Center in Chicago. The international center treats eating disorders like anorexia, bulimia and binge-eating.“Does this pandemic and the isolation contribute to worsening difficulties with eating disorders? Absolutely 100%,” said Astrachan-Fletcher.She says for millions suffering from eating disorders, the months-long lockdowns and isolation from support systems is amplifying the problem.With grocery stores not stocking certain products, experts say that could be a trigger for people who need that normal routine and those specific food brands to help keep them on their recovery track.“The reality is we have to be flexible in this time because due to the pandemic things are not what we expect,” said Astrachan-Fletcher.People turning to food for comfort and social media messaging about weight gain are not helping.“When someone starts engaging with an eating disorder, they tend to isolate and that feeds the eating disorder,” said Astrachan-Fletcher. “So, the isolation and pushing loved ones away is one way the eating disorder grows.”The National Eating Disorders Association says it has seen a 74% increase in calls to their help line during the pandemic as compared to the same time last year.“Even though sometimes it feels like we're alone, you don't have to be and there are lots of people here to be there with you,” said Astrachan-Fletcher.Astrachan-Fletcher says it’s important to seek professional help, take a friend or family member with you when you go to the grocery store, and set up virtual online dates for meal-times or snack breaks.Dorsa says it’s important to find your helpers.“You're not alone and you're enough just as you are,” he said. “You don't have to show up any other way other than with what you have. MURRAY, Utah – Dr. Todd Vento has spent most of his professional life preparing for the worst-case scenario.“I still have a lot of connections because of things I’ve done in the past,” said Dr. Vento while sitting in the lobby of Intermountain Medical Center in Murray, Utah.He is an infectious disease specialist who previously worked for the Department of Defense, managing the Ebola outbreak in West Africa.He’s since been recruited to fight on the COVID-19 front lines.“When you prepare and constantly live in that world of preparing for a true threat, you do expect that this could happen,” Vento said.In video provided by Intermountain Healthcare and University of Utah Health, you can see states in the Mountain West are reaching a critical tipping point.The talk of moving to a crisis level of care is imminent.One example, the Utah Hospital Association is reporting double the numbers of COVID-19 patients in hospitals from two weeks ago, and five times the number of patients from two months ago.So, what happens at hospitals when numbers surge? The process of load leveling happens first.“(Load leveling is) balancing out where the patients are so you don’t have one facility that might have 110% of capacity, while another facility is at 70%,” Vento said.A patient management system called “Care Traffic Control” covers seven westerns states. Like other systems in the country, it tells first responders where they can take patients.Next comes contingency care.“That contingency plan might be that we need to take care of more COVID-19 patients, so that means we convert another hospital that takes care of non-COVID-19 patients,” Vento explained.Part of the contingency plan also means canceling noncritical surgeries.Finally, there are crisis levels of care.“The concept of the term, crisis standards of care really gets down to a similar concept used in combat and the military,” Vento said. “I know that may sound harsh, but it’s really about the triage process.”That means doctors will be forced to make tough decisions about who gets care and what that will look like.As many states smash records of COVID-19 cases, health care workers are being stretched thin and asking for help.“It’s up to us to allow all our livelihoods to continue,” Vento said. 2276

(WTVF) — A 61-year-old man was arrested for violating a public health order that requires people to wear face masks in Nashville.According to his arrest affidavit, Joseph Bryant was issued a citation for not wearing a mask around 6:40 p.m. Wednesday. About an hour later, the police report states an officer saw Bryant again in the same area. Again, he wasn't wearing a mask.According to the arrest report, the officer said he chose to arrest Bryant because "of the obvious likelihood the offense would continue."Bryant was booked into the Davidson County Jail on 0 bond.As more and more states and municipalities adopt mask mandates, many have questioned how they will be enforced.
