SAN DIEGO — When it comes to takeout and delivery, breakfast food just doesn't really cut it.That's a problem for Johan Engman and his Rise and Shine Restaurant group, with the flagship Breakfast Republic."Imagine an eggs Benedict, a poached egg with hollandaise sauce. It doesn't travel that well," Engman said Tuesday.Sales are down more than 90 percent and 450 employees were just furloughed amid the lockdown."It's heartbreaking, but what makes it even worse is that we're in the holiday season," Engman said.But instead of simply giving up and hoping for another round of stimulus, Engman is keeping a couple extra workers on at Breakfast Republic's Mission Valley location - preparing what could turn into hundreds of free meals everyday for impacted workers or anyone in need - no questions asked."I mean, we're hemorrhaging money, but I think when the going gets tough, that's when you need to show character," Engman said.Two years ago, Rise and Shine Restaurants created a nonprofit that got a dollar for every sold breakfast burritos, one of the most popular items. That money has, for instance, been used to make thousand-dollar donations to other nonprofits nominated by customers.And during the march lockdown, the nonprofit bought ,000 worth of meals for the public - about 6,400, and it has about that much cash left this time."We have a little chunk of money there that we want to put to good use," Engman said.And while breakfast is in the name - it's not breakfast being served for free. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 30-year-old man was killed when he lost control of his motorcycle and crashed into a fire hydrant in a neighborhood north of Scripps Ranch.The crash was reported around 4:20 p.m. Wednesday on Stonebridge Parkway near Stockwood Cove, off Pomerado Road in the Rancho Encantada neighborhood, San Diego police Officer John Buttle said.The victim was riding his 2019 Indian Scout motorcycle between 80-100 mph eastbound on Stonebridge Parkway when he lost control at a curve in the road, jumped the curb and slammed into a fire hydrant, Buttle said.The rider was ejected onto the roadway and pronounced dead at the scene, he said. Kate Brown says “dozens of people” are missing from the large wildfires that have burned across the state.Brown made the announcement at a news briefing Friday afternoon, and said the reports of missing people come from blazes in southern Oregon near Medford and the northern part of the state near the state capital of Salem.At least four wildfire deaths of have been reported in Oregon.Hundreds of firefighters, aided by helicopters dropping fire retardant and water, battled two large wildfires Friday that threatened to merge near the most populated part of Oregon, including the suburbs of Portland.The number of people ordered to evacuate statewide because of fires rose to an estimated 500,000 — more than 10% of the state’s 4.2 million people, the Oregon Office of Emergency Management reported late Thursday.The Oregon Convention Center in Portland was among the buildings being transformed into shelters for evacuees. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A grand jury indictment charging three San Diegans with conspiracy to commit fraud, grand theft, forgery and identity theft was unsealed Thursday, alleging the defendants defrauded more than 100 local Navy service members out of millions by selling the service members unnecessary life insurance policies.Paul Flanagan, 54; Ranjit Kalsi, 52; and Gregory Martin II, 49, are accused of selling 4,700 life insurance policies and annuity contracts to service members who already had life insurance through the Navy, otherwise known as Servicemembers' Group Life Insurance.Prosecutors allege the defendants -- through their company, Go Navy Tax Service -- misrepresented what services the company was providing when they sold policies to the service members. Bank accounts were opened in the service members' names to make automatic payments toward the policies' premiums, though the victims believed they were signing up for a retirement savings account or other services, rather than life insurance policies.Flanagan, the company's owner, pleaded not guilty to nearly 70 felony counts at the downtown San Diego courthouse Thursday afternoon. Kalsi and Martin, who allegedly did the bulk of the sales out of the company's office -- a trailer located near the San Diego Naval Base on 32nd Street -- were arraigned Wednesday afternoon.The defendants face more than 20 years in prison if convicted of all counts, according to the San Diego County District Attorney's Office. Prosecutors allege the victims were defrauded out of around .8 million total.The company's website, www.gonavytaxservice.com, currently only provides a brief statement on its homepage, which reads, "Hello, we are currently unable to provide Tax Preparation Services this off-season. "Within two months, these guys were going to get statements that told them exactly what the product was that they had, and they had a clawback provision where they could come back and complain, and say `well, I didn't understand this' or 'I don't want this,' and the insurance company would have refunded the money."According to Pott, Flanagan was out of state during most of the time of the charged incidents and simply received and submitted the policy applications. But as to Kalsi and Martin, Pott said, "We don't have any reason to believe that the two agents involved did anything appropriate either."The attorney said, "The disturbing thing about this prosecution is the suggestion that the government's going to come in and second-guess whether or not you need these particular financial vehicles. There's nothing illegal about getting more insurance or having another investment vehicle that helps you feel more secure in their retirement."Kalsi’s attorney, Domenic Lombardo, had no comment at this time.Martin’s attorney, Jeremy Warren, tells 10News, “Mr. Martin has been aware of the investigation for some time and vigorously denies the allegations. He looks forward to defending himself in court.”The investigation into the alleged fraud began last year, on the basis of complaints sent to the Attorney General's office."The victims of this scam were young women and men serving our country who were essentially tricked into signing up for something they didn't need and couldn't afford." District Attorney Summer Stephan said. "Enlisted sailors were not given a chance as to whether they wanted a supplemental life insurance policy. SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — South Salt Lake Police officers pitched in to replace a woman's American flag after they say she used it to fight off a home intruder on Monday.According to the department, 42-year-old Justin Scott Smith attempted to break into the woman's home shortly before 9 a.m.Police say when the suspect entered the front yard through the gate and assaulted multiple people, the woman grabbed the flag pole with the flag attached to defend herself and her family members. They say she hit the suspect multiple times, breaking the pole in the process, and the victims retreated into the home.Smith kicked the door in and continued to assault everyone inside, police say, before officers arrived and took him into custody.He was arrested on suspicion of assault, aggravated assault, aggravated burglary, and criminal mischief.After the incident, police say the woman was worried about desecrating the flag because the pole had broken and the flag had hit the ground, so officers took up a collection to replace it.
