SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — State officials hope California’s new 10 p.m. stay-at-home order will slow the spread of COVID-19, otherwise, another 10,000 San Diegans are projected to contract the virus in the next 10 days.That’s according to a new county-by-county forecast from Facebook, which rolled out the prediction software last month.Facebook projects L.A. County will see the second-largest increase in cases in the country by November 30. San Diego County is projected to add the 15th most cases, reaching a total of 78,594 infections by Nov. 30.The two-week forecast was released before Governor Gavin Newsom announced enhanced restrictions. Facebook will release a new two-week forecast next week.“Many other forecasts around the world are only predicting caseload at a country or state level,” said Laura McGorman with Facebook’s Data for Good team. “We’re trying to be much more local in this approach because we know so much of the COVID-19 response is in fact local.”McGorman said the forecast tool could help county and state officials plan hospital bed space, ICU capacity, ventilators and other critical supplies.The map is powered by artificial intelligence that draws on seven kinds of data. They use outside metrics like confirmed cases, doctor visits and the weather combined with information Facebook collects like a survey of people’s symptoms and GPS location data.The location data helps gauge whether people are staying home and isolating or circulating among the community, according to McGorman.Facebook only pulls data from users who opt in and no, they’re not reading your posts. All of the information, which is aggregated to the county or state level to protect privacy, is available for the public to download.The tech giant initially started Data for Good three years ago to help with disaster-relief projects, McGorman said. Among other applications, their location data can quickly predict if evacuations are working.“Typically, groups like the Red Cross have to knock door-to-door to see if people are still home, or wait for people to show up at shelters to see if they’ve gotten out of harm’s way,” she said.The software has also been used to detect network outages when a hurricane knocks out cellphone towers, she said.Facebook’s COVID-19 mapping tools have been used to inform policymakers in New York and Mexico, and the data has helped analyze the effectiveness of stay-at-home orders in California, McGorman said. 2457

"They think they’re big mosquitoes."But they're not. And a couple of the assumptions about the insect also need some clearing up.They aren't mosquitoesCrane flies are harmless to humans, Conlan says. Both crane flies are part of the order Diptera, or "flies," but mosquitoes are a part of family Culicidae. Crane flies are part of the family Tipulidae.And because they're usually caught buzzing around porch lights quickly or around a home even, residents may get scared upon seeing them.“They’re very attracted to lights, so if you have any around openings to your home, it’s very easy for them to get accidentally swept into the house,” Conlan said. “And then they end up freaking you and the cat out!”While they are big for bugs, reaching up to an inch or more in length, their pole-like legs can make them appear even larger.But there's a rule of thumb Conlan advises residents follow: If it looks bigger than a dime, it's too big to be a mosquito.They don't eat mosquitoesAnother big misconception, brought on by their nicknames, is that they eat mosquitoes.Crane flies don't suck blood — most adult flies actually don't eat eat all. If they do eat, they drink nectar. The bug doesn't bite and can't transmit any diseases. And their larvae generally feed off decaying organic matter while living in wet soil.In fact, they're more likely to be eaten by birds, lizards, and other creatures. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego resident Jenifer Raub describes herself as a fighter.“I just don’t give up. If I see a window, just a little crack in the doorway of opportunity, I’m going to jump on it," said Raub.She never imagined to find herself in the fight against Parkinson's Disease, a progressive nervous system disorder which affects movement and has no cure.“For me, it was I had a hard time walking, but it was real intermittent, it just made no sense, and then my hands started to shake," said Raub.In the beginning, Raub refused to believe the diagnosis, eventually finding a doctor who told her what she wanted to hear."He told me I didn’t have the disease and he told me to go off all those medications you're fine. I did, and I couldn’t walk at all at that point.”So Raub shifted her fight towards finding a cure for Parkinson's.She's now president of the Summit for Stem Cell Foundation, a nonprofit created to support the use of stem cells to treat Parkinson’s; research underway in Dr. Jeanne Loring’s Torrey Pines lab. “We’re right on the edge of a revolution, in which these particular cells, because of their power and our ability to manipulate them, are going to change the way medicine is done," said Dr. Loring.Her research focuses on pluripotent stem cells, the remarkable cells that self-renew and can give rise to every cell type in the body.Parkinson’s Disease breaks down and eventually kills certain nerve cells in the brain, dopamine neurons that affect movement. Dr. Loring's team is working to transform patient's skin cells into pluripotent cells which can then become dopamine neurons. “We plan to transplant those cells to the brains of people with Parkinson’s to replace neurons they’ve lost," said Dr. Loring. Because the cells come from the actual patient, they are a perfect match which the body will not reject. After the implant, Dr. Loring says over time they'll make connections and restore circuits that have been broken by the loss of dopamine neurons. Patients, she says, will likely start seeing changes in their symptoms in six months. Dr. Loring believes the treatment could also work for other diseases like Alzheimer's and Multiple Sclerosis. ‘These diseases are not going to able to be treated with a conventional drug that you take, it's going to have to be more sophisticated than that, and I think this opens the opportunity for really scientifically-based, knowledge-based therapies. Stem cells are medicines; we can't forget that. They're living drugs," said Dr. Loring.Her team has already proven the treatment works in animals. Now they're waiting on FDA approval for a clinical trial of 10 patients, Raub will be one of them. Raub is also a patient advocate and works tirelessly to fundraise for Summit for Stem Cell Foundation. "The disease is a progressive disease and their [patient's] time is of the essence, it's critical to people with Parkinson’s. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Students at Gompers Preparatory Academy were evacuated following a threat the school said it received Monday. San Diego Police say they received a call around 3:50 p.m. after someone reportedly left a voicemail on an administrative line at the school, making a vague bomb threat. A staff member at the school pulled a fire alarm, initiating the evacuation. "GPA received a telephonic threat after school today and the campus has been evacuated," the school said in an Instagram post. According to authorities, the students were evacuated to a nearby park. Roughly 80 students were still on campus along with 30 to 35 staff members. Police arrived and used a K9 to comb through the school, but found no trace of a bomb. An investigation is underway to determine who left the voicemail. Today was the first day students returned to class at the academy. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Some local leaders believe a significant number of homes that could help ease the housing shortage are actually vacant, and it may be time to consider a 'vacancy tax.'On any given night, amid the bright lights of the downtown skyline, are the not-so-bright, 41-story towers of the Harbor Club condominiums. Aaron Howe lives two blocks away."Just kind of empty and lonely. You see a few lights, but it's mostly dark," said Howe.Sources tells 10News, at various times in the past decade, as many as half the units have been vacant, meaning they are not a primary residence. I'm concerned you have people making investments in their fourth, fifth and sixth homes. To tackle the housing crisis, you can't just build something you call housing. It has to be something that actually houses people," said Fletcher. But just how many local homes stand empty? According to the the real estate tracker CoStar, San Diego's vacancy rate is about 4.5 percent. A healthy market is around 7 or 8 percent, but those numbers generally account for apartments, not single family homes and condos. Months ago, the San Diego Housing Commission directed staff to look into more accurate vacancy numbers, a first step that could lead to the proposal of a vacancy tax, similar to one enacted in Vancouver, British Columbia in 2017. "Housing prices were going up far faster than local incomes were.
