SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- SeaWorld San Diego plans to close Thursday as the county prepares for a storm. According to a news release, the theme park made the decision due to heavy rain and strong winds that could sweep through San Diego. The park plans to re-open Friday, November 30. Showers are expected to develop Wednesday night, becoming widespread and heavier by Thursday. Rainfall totals are expected to average between .50” to 1.50” for the coast and valleys with 2” to 4” in the mountains and .50” in the deserts. Strong winds will also accompany the storm. A wind advisory is in effect for the coast and valleys Thursday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and for the mountains and deserts from 6 a.m. Thursday through 6 a.m. Friday. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego State University says 400 students have confirmed and probable cases of coronavirus.The university said Tuesday that, since August 24, 396 students have tested positive for COVID-19. Four other students have probable cases of the virus.The update comes one day after the school extended its stay-at-home order for on-campus residents through September 14. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- SeaWorld’s rescue team is in full swing, rescuing more than 150 animals and birds so far this year. More than 80 marine mammals and over 75 birds have so far been rescued in 2019, with the goal of rehabilitating and returning them to their homes, SeaWorld says. On April 2, the team rescued a 10-month-old sea lion pup with a two-inch cut on its flipper from a coastal rock in Ocean Beach. After being treated, the team hopes to return him to the wild in six to eight weeks. Wednesday, the team also returned 13 rehabilitated sea lions to the ocean. SeaWorld San Diego has rescued more than 20,000 animals over the last 55 years, according to a news release. 687

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Some University City residents are upset over the city's lethal methods to curb the squirrel population at Nobel Athletic Area park. Many see the park as an escape from the neighborhood's concrete jungle. "One of the joys of being here is to watch the wildlife in the morning-- the rabbits and the squirrels especially," resident, Tracy Benson said. But that began to change once Benson started seeing more green boxes on the ground, similar to water irrigation units.RELATED: Chula Vista seeks public input on future bayfront parks in online survey"There is a hole back here, and in this hole is where the bait is placed. So the idea is the animal eats the bait, comes out, and essentially dies," Benson said. The more of these boxes the animal lover saw, the fewer squirrels she ran into on her walks.10News contacted the City of San Diego to get answers. A spokesman explained that the green apparatus is a "bait box." It helps manage what they call an "overabundant squirrel population."The City's Parks and Recreation Department began using them a few years ago to stop the squirrels from damaging their athletic facilities, landscaping, and eroding the hillside.
