The new test not only provides a positive or negative reading, but it also provides vital genetic information that can help create a vaccine.From concept to the FDA's emergency use authorization, the San Diego-based team at Illumina worked at warp speed."The idea came 58 days ago," Susan Tousi, Sr. VP. of Production and Development at Illumina said. "It took a village of all of us in San Diego to make that happen."There are already many different types of COVID-19 tests on the market.But the scientists and engineers at Illumina came up with a test that reveals a lot more."Our test not only gives you a yes or no answer for the presence of the virus, but it also gives you the genetic sequence of the virus," Tousi said.On Tuesday, the FDA approved the Emergency use of the world's first COVID-19 test that also shows the biological makeup of the virus.The results can help researchers track and trace the virus and study different mutations over time and in different regions."Knowing this is really critical, not only to the development of effective vaccines but also for us to detect its presence, recurrence, and whether there is a mutated form that we need to be prepared for," Tousi said.The sample is collected via nose or throat swab and sent to the lab.A sequencing machine can run up 43,000 samples a week. From swab to results, it takes only 24 hours."This was the culmination of an incredible amount of work. And I'm confident we're going to make a big difference in the fight against COVID," Tousi said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- A plan to permanently remove the traffic along Normal Street in Hillcrest and replace it with a promenade will be voted on Tuesday. If approved, the westside traffic lanes would become a pedestrian walkway with dedicated bike lanes. It would also make room for the weekly Hillcrest farmers market and other events. “They call it a promenade but where are people promenading to,” says Linda Hanna, owner of Salon Antoine. Hanna has owned the business near the corner of Normal Street and University Avenue for almost 20 years. “We are in favor of something like this, but we need to think it through.”Other business owners are worried because the project would eliminate a driveway to a nearby shopping center.“If you don’t close that driveway, you have a driveway going right to the park, and that’s a real problem,” says Benjamin Nicholls, Executive Director of the Hillcrest Business Association. To add space to the east side lanes, some parking spaces will be moved. The Hillcrest Business Association says there are plans to add dozens of parking spaces near Lincoln Avenue. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Witness video shows the moment San Diego Police opened fire on a pursuit suspect in Logan Heights Monday.The video starts with the suspect, identified Tuesday as 30-year-old Enrique Aguilar, walking in the middle of the street, it appears toward the direction of police. Yells of "drop the gun" could be heard as Aguilar continues walking down the street.As Aguilar proceeds toward officers, police say he pointed a weapon at officers. A hail of gunfire rings out and Aguilar falls to the ground.RELATED: Foot pursuit ends in officer-involved shooting in Logan HeightsTwo officers then approach Aguilar and place him in under arrest.Aguilar was taken to a nearby hospital with non-life threatening injuries.Two officers involved in the exchange of gunfire were not injured. 800

"The president gave congress six months to come up with a permanent fix for this DACA crisis, and it didn’t happen. So we want to make sure we’re in D.C. when March 5 comes.”“Absolutely, yes I’m nervous," Francisco Peralta said. "This is the first time actually being in D.C. ever and also it’s the first time that I’m going to be sitting in a room where, you know, with members of congress.”Ali Torabi will also be going. San Diego (KGTV)- An Escondido family discovers new challenges in caring for their newborn diagnosed with Spina Bifida. He's finally home after staying in the hospital for months. The parents share the biggest hurdle is his continued care during the Pandemic.In the first three months of his life, Baby Devin has experienced eight surgeries. Spina Bifida is a condition where his spine didn't fully close while in the womb."Devin is at a small percentage where he has Symptomatic Chiari, where it affects his ability to breath and swallow," says dad Jon Hoy.Now at five months, little Devin is home from the hospital with his parents and three brothers, but he requires 24-hour medical care."He has a trache in his throat, and then he has a ventilator that helps him breathe," says Hoy. "The same ventilators that have become so crucial during COVID-19. He has G-tube to help him eat in his stomach."Parents Jon and Erin Hoy say finding in-home care has been tough."These nurses need to be pediatric certified. They need to be trache certified and vent certified," says Mom Erin Hoy. "His level of acuity has just created a big barrier for finding nurses."Due to COVID-19, there is an added level of caution for those who are around Baby Devin. Hoy says during her search for adequate help, she's learned, "there's a significant difference or pay difference between nurses in a hospital or a facility compared to nurses in home."Hoy says they are still in need of nurses to help Devin around the clock, but they are grateful for the ones that have come in so far."There's always light that comes if you just hold on.
