Wimbledon has been canceled for the first time since World War II because of the coronavirus pandemic. The All England Club announced after an emergency meeting that the oldest Grand Slam tournament in tennis would not be held in 2020. Wimbledon was scheduled to be played on the outskirts of London from June 29 to July 12. "Following a series of detailed deliberations on all of the above, it is the Committee of Management’s view that cancellation of The Championships is the best decision in the interests of public health, and that being able to provide certainty by taking this decision now, rather than in several weeks, is important for everyone involved in tennis and The Championships," the club said in a statement Wednesday.The club added tickets will be refunded, and fans will be given the opportunity to purchase tickets for the same day and court during the 2021 tournament.The club also said it is in the process of developing a plan to support "those who rely on The Championship" for financial support, including staffers and players. The club did not go into specifics.Wimbledon now joins the growing list of sports events scrapped in 2020 because of the COVID-19 outbreak. Two people have been bitten by sharks off the coast of North Carolina in the past 14 days, and a third person was bitten by an unknown animal during that time period, officials said.On Sunday, an 8-year-old boy was bitten by an animal "believed to be a shark," according to Village Manager of Bald Head Island Chris McCall.McCall says the child suffered non-life threatening injuries in the incident off Bald Head Island's South Beach.The boy had puncture wounds on his leg and was transported off the island to receive medical treatment, McCall said.McCall said authorities don't know what type of shark was involved in the attack.This is the second attack in the state in the last two weeks.A 17-year-old girl lost her left leg and two fingers on her left hand in a 780

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Peace Corps is telling its volunteers around the world that it is suspending all operations globally and evacuating all volunteers in light of the spread of the new coronavirus. In an open letter to volunteers posted Sunday on its website, the federal agency's director, Jody Olsen, says the decision follows recent evacuations in China and Mongolia due to the outbreak. Olsen says that with evacuations now underway at other posts and travel becoming more challenging by the day, the agency decided to expand the suspension and evacuations. WASHINGTON, D.C. – Three different people who protected students from gunmen in 2018 and 2019 are being celebrated by the Congressional Medal of Honor Society. The society is honoring Oregon teacher Keanon Lowe, North Carolina student Riley Howell, and Texas student Christian Garcia with its 2020 Citizen Honors Awards. The awards are given to people and organizations that exemplify the values embodied Medal of Honor: courage, sacrifice, commitment, integrity, citizenship, and patriotism.Lowe and Howell are both being honored with the society’s Single Act of Heroism Award. Lowe, a teacher and coach at Portland’s Parkrose High School, made headlines in October when he disarmed a student with a loaded shotgun and then embraced him.
