DENVER, Colo. – Terri Gentry is a civil rights activist and volunteer at the Black American West Museum in Denver, Colorado. "My great grandfather – Dr. Thomas Ernest McClain – is the first black licensed dentist in Colorado," Gentry said. Her family lives on the walls of the museum, showcasing stories that will never be forgotten. “Coming in here for me is visiting my ancestors,” Gentry said. Confronting issues with the Ku Klux Klan and other incidents of racial discrimination, Gentry's great grandfather had many challenges, a lot to overcome in the early 1900s. However, he found a community that stood together and found the strength to rise up. Now they serve as an inspiration for Gentry and others who reflect on the past during Black History Month. “We get a lot of activity and action and response to Black History Month and then the interest wanes,” said Gentry. “But we’re here 365 days a year, so we hope that Black History Month gives highlight to us, but then it continues to create action for people to do things year-round.” Gentry says Black History Month was created to show how African Americans have helped to shape the United States, especially since their accomplishments haven’t always been recognized in mainstream education. “I remember being in school and there was one sentence about our experiences. And it said, ‘negroes were slaves,’" Gentry said. Black History Month is a time when we can reflect on the resistance to slavery and the impactful human beings who have fought for civil rights, like Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X and Rosa Parks. There are so many well-known people who helped progress equality in the U.S. But for Gentry, the most influential person in her life wasn’t somebody famous. “My grandmother, Ernestine Smith," Gentry said emotionally. Ernestine McClain Smith was the daughter of the dentist, and Gentry's grandmother. She was a dancer and performer, but more importantly, she was an advocate for civil and human rights. “My hope is that I continue her legacy. She impacted thousands of lives in our community,” Gentry said. Ernestine Smith always knew the importance of sharing stories from those in the past. “We’d walk into her bedroom when I was little, and she had this ancestral wall,” said Gentry. “So all of the pictures of her parents, her grandparents, her great grandparents were on this wall and she would talk to us about their stories and their history.” Those stories – and the stories millions of other African Americans hold dear—are what Gentry believes will help people from different backgrounds to connect. “I think that what Black History Month does is it opens the door for people to get another perspective.”When we understand each other’s perspectives, we often come to realize we’re not all that different in the end.“We’ve got to change our mindset and change our attitude and get rid of this issue about entitlement and get rid of this issue about ‘I’m better than you,’" Gentry said. "That’s killing us. That’s killing the country. We’ve got to change that idea and start embracing everyone… each and every individual that is here, that comes here, that’s been here. CHICAGO, Ill. For the last few years, libraries have begun leveraging their resources in the fight against the deadly opioid crisis, providing critically needed information, and services. And while it’s too early to measure the impact they are having, libraries are playing an increasingly active role in prevention and recovery efforts. Every day, 130 Americans die from an opioid overdose. It’s an epidemic that Public Library Association Deputy Director Larra Clark says has placed libraries and their staff on the frontlines. “If there is an issue that's playing out in this country libraries are almost certainly part of that story,” said Clark. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, from 1999 to 2017, almost 400,000 people died from an overdose involving an opioid, including prescription and illicit drugs. Three overdoses inside the Peoria Public Library in central Illinois in less than a year forced administrators there to act. Deputy director of the Peoria Public Library Roberta Koscielski says on one occasion, a man in the midst of an overdose came up to a librarian in the middle of the day. “He collapsed right in front of her at the desk. So, she called the security card called emergency responders and he was revived with Narcan,” said Koscielski. About 80 staff members at all five of their branches are now trained on how to administer the life-saving overdose antidote Narcan or naloxone. “This role of library as an intermediary intervener supporter is not new but I think this crisis is new and we have to help the people who are coming in our doors” said Clark. The nonprofit Online Computer Library Center released a report this past fall detailing some of the ways libraries are playing a larger part in battling the national opioid crisis. At the top of that list, says Clark, is education. “How can we translate that into better services and support for people for individuals who may be addicted or for their families and their communities?” 7,000 pill bottles representing the number of opioid prescriptions filled each day in Utah hung from the ceiling at the Salt Lake County Library as part of a marketing campaign titled “Use Only as Directed” meant to represent the magnitude of the crisis. Many libraries are stocking books like Sam Quinones’s Dreamland: The True Tale of America’s Opiate Epidemic. “I had no idea when I read it just about the size of the problem and that people can work a job and be very addicted to a substance,” said Koscielski. With the threat from opioids in the form of pills, heroin and fentanyl not going away, Clark says many libraries are helping to search for answers and provide them to those who need them most.“One of the things that we heard from people is do something, right? There's not one right answer to this. It is not going to be libraries alone. It is not going to be any of these other agencies by themselves. This issue is too big.” 2954
BALTIMORE, Md. – For 95-year-old Betty Cooke, her lifelong passion of turning metal into wearable works of art began in the 1940s. “I was always interested in making things, whether it's metal clay or whatever,” she said. “And I kind of took to this and I had a good feel for the simplicity of it.” It’s a simplicity celebrated not just at her Baltimore store, but also at the Baltimore Museum of Art. “They really stand out, they're really sculptural, they're really dimensional – they move on the body,” said Virginia Anderson, Baltimore Museum of Art Curator of American Art. Betty’s works are just one part of “2020 Vision,” a pledge by the museum in 2020 to only purchase art by female artists. “Of course, it was duly noted that this is this centennial of white women receiving the votes in the United States,” said Christopher Bedford, Director of the Baltimore Museum of Art. “So, we thought ‘well, this would be a great moment to analyze our collection, begin to understand some of our historical deficits.” How big are those gender deficits? A study last year published in the Public Library of Science looked at 18 major museums in the U.S. and found that 85 percent of the artists in their collections were white and 87 percent were men. This, despite the fact that half of the professional artists in the U.S. are women. At the Baltimore Museum of Art, the disparity is even more lopsided. “We have roughly four percent,” Bedford said. “Four percent of our collection is works by women.” Now, though, with 21 of their 23 curators being women, the Baltimore Museum of Art plans to spend at least .5 million this year, acquiring pieces by female artists – like those created by Betty Cooke. “This is a big moment for the women,” Cooke said. “I hope and I expect it to continue and I think it's pretty great.”Another recent study found that smaller museums seem to be doing better than larger ones, when it comes to buying works by female artists. AURORA, Colo. -- Just as hundreds of restaurants are being forced to close down indoor dining, yet again, In-N-Out Burger made its debut in Colorado on Friday.Hundreds waited in line for hours to get a burger from the California-based fast-food chain.“It’s just a journey today,” said Charly, who came to relieve her dad who waited for three hours, but then had to go to work without making it to the front of the line.“Three or four hours wasn’t unexpected,” said Bob Fischer. “So, it’s definitely worth the wait.”Whether it was worth the wait depends on who you asked.But is it worth it? “No,” said Charly. “I don’t even eat beef.
