MANILA, June 7 (Xinhua) -- A reception was held in Manila Monday evening to mark the 35th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the Philippines.Present at the reception, hosted by the Chinese embassy, were Philippine Foreign Secretary Alberto Romulo, former Philippine first lady Imelda Marcos, diplomats, Filipinos with Chinese origin and representatives of Chinese enterprises investing in the country.Addressing the reception, Chinese ambassador to the Philippines Liu Jianchao said that over the past 35 years, constructive and productive meetings on a regular basis between top leaders of the two countries have been indispensable in advancing bilateral ties with sustaining strength."I strongly believe," he said, "The essence of China- Philippines should be rooted in our peoples, in the studies we share, the business we do, the knowledge we gain, and even the sports we play.""Our purpose has always been making friends and partners with the Philippines and all the other countries in the region, fostering an amicable, stable and prosperous neighborhood, and building cooperation for mutual benefit and win-win progress," he added."As we are expecting the Philippine top leadership to be proclaimed, we know that China-Philippines relations are facing a new historical opportunity. The common interests between China and the Philippines are large, so is the scope of China-Philippines cooperation. The Chinese side looks forward to working with the incoming Philippine administration to ensure that China- Philippines strategic and cooperative relationship gets off to a good start and continues to forge ahead," he said.Philippine Foreign Secretary Romulo said that the theme for this year's anniversary is "Philippines plus China, more than friends". This theme highlights three distinct features of bilateral relationship: the deep ties of friendship between the two peoples; the multifaceted and expanding bilateral relations; and the role of youth in this relationship."We are proud that many prominent Filipinos are of Chinese ancestry. Foremost among them, of course, is our national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal, our first woman President Corazon C. Aquino, and our first Filipino saint, Lorenzo Ruiz," he said.Aside from these prominent Filipinos, members of the Chinese- Filipino community have made and continue to make significant contributions to Philippine society, he added.China and the Philippines established diplomatic relations on June 9, 1975.

BEIJING, May 4 (Xinhua) -- China had raised 4.349 billion yuan (637 million U.S. dollars) of donations in money and materials for quake-hit Yushu as of Tuesday, according to the Ministry of Civil Affairs.The donations included 3.66 billion yuan and quake-relief materials worth 686 million yuan as of 4:00 p.m., said a statement released by the ministry.The post said 635 million yuan, including 79 million yuan and materials worth 556 million yuan, had been channeled to the quake zone.It said 69,353 cotton-padded tents, 143,854 cotton-padded coats, together with other quake-relief materials, had been delivered to Yushu.At least 2,200 people died and more than 100,000 were left homeless when the 7.1-magnitude earthquake hit the Yushu prefecture, Qinghai Province on April 14.

BEIJING, March 28 (Xinhua) -- China will step up efforts to crack major corruption cases, especially those with collusion between leading officials and business people, according to the full text of a speech delivered by Premier Wen Jiabao.The document was released on Sunday. Wen delivered the speech at a State Council meeting on this year's anti-corruption work on Tuesday.In the speech, Wen said efforts should be made to investigate those who trade power for money, and those who take advantage of power to do illegal things in areas including urban planning, approving construction programs, mineral resources exploration and bidding and tendering.Negligence and misconduct behind major work safety incidents and food safety scandals would also be probed.In the speech, Wen outlined key areas of the government's anti-corruption fight this year, including government funded projects, state-owned enterprises and financial institutions.He called for intensified efforts to trace the fugitives and their illicit money and property, and vowed "not to let those who commit corruption to go unpunished or get a penny out of their illicit gain."Government officials should strictly follow a code of ethics issued earlier this year by the Communist Party of China (CPC) to ensure clean practice in their work and to prevent corruptionThe guidelines specify 52 unacceptable practices, including officials accepting cash or financial instruments as gifts, or officials using their influence to benefit their spouses and children with regards to their employment, stock trading or business.And leaders of the State Council or central government departments should refrain from attending ceremonies or forums sponsored by companies, he added.Expenses on central government organs would be cut by 5 percent this year and government funded overseas trips, vehicle purchase, and reception expenditure should be reduced consequently, he said.
