VISTA (CNS) - An Oceanside physician who sexually assaulted five female patients referred by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs was sentenced Thursday to three years probation and was ordered to register as a sex offender and surrender his medical license.Dr. Edgar Manzanera, 39, could face three years in state prison if he violates the terms of his probation.Manzanera, who was contracted by the VA to review pension disability claims, pleaded guilty last September to one count of sexual exploitation by a physician for acts committed in 2015 and 2016, and admitted a special allegation of committing acts against multiple victims.RELATED: Former doctor pleads guilty to sexual misconductFour counts of sexual penetration with a foreign object were dismissed as part of the plea."The victims placed the defendant in a position of inherent trust and confidence and the defendant betrayed that trust," Deputy District Attorney Claudia Plascencia said when Manzanera pleaded guilty. (KGTV) — A double shooting in North County has left one woman dead and a man hospitalized Saturday.A caller reported two people suffering from gunshot wounds, one was not breathing, at a home in the 1800 block of Hartwright Road just before 7 a.m., according to San Diego County Sheriff's Department.Deputies and Vista Fire personnel arrived to find one woman with a traumatic gunshot wound. She was pronounced dead at the scene. A man suffering from a suspected gunshot wound was transported to a nearby hospital with "severe" injuries, deputies say. Deputies said his prognosis is unknown.The San Diego County Medical Examiner has not released the identity of the woman pending family notification. WASHINGTON — U.S. health officials have started two new studies to test various blood thinners to try to prevent strokes, heart attacks, blood clots and other complications in COVID-19 patients.Doctors increasingly are finding blood clots throughout the bodies of many people who died from COVID-19 along with signs of damage they do to kidneys, lungs, blood vessels, the heart and other organs.National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute Director Gary Gibbons says that hospitals have been giving seriously ill patients anti-clotting drugs to try to prevent this, but “quite frankly, we didn’t know how best to treat it” in terms of which drugs or doses to use and at what stage of illness.The National Institutes of Health will coordinate a study in hospitalized patients comparing low and regular doses of the blood thinner heparin. The study will involve more than 100 sites around the world participating in a research effort with various governments, drug companies, universities and others to speed coronavirus therapies.A second study in COVID-19 patients not sick enough to need hospitalization will test various strategies against placebo pills: baby aspirin or low or regular doses of the anti-clotting drug apixaban, sold as Eliquis in the United States. VISTA (CNS) - Law enforcement Wednesday asked for the public's help in finding a suspect wanted in connection with a series of break-ins and attempted break-ins over the past month.Between Oct. 25 and Nov. 20, the same man is believed to have targeted five businesses in Vista -- sometimes successfully, sometimes not -- in seven separate incidents, according to San Diego County Crime Stoppers.The businesses were Tabacinic Chabad Jewish Center at 1930 Sunset Drive; Tiki Mobile Village at 1333 Olive Ave; Maximum Recycling at 430 Olive Ave; and Wholesale Sports Inc. and Get Air Vista, both located at 2755 Dos Aarons Way.The man is suspected of stealing a total of ,500 in cash, a 0 iPad and a carved tiki stump valued at about , in addition to causing about ,000 worth of damages, investigators said.He was described as white or Hispanic, about 5-feet-8 to 5-feet-11, with a thin build and a distinct tattoo on his left forearm.
