Xi arrived in the Vietnamese capital of Hanoi on Thursday, kicking off a two-day state visit to the neighboring country. It is Xi's first visit to Vietnam as head of state and CPC chief.

"We are convinced that the upcoming summit will promote South-South cooperation, encourage North-South dialogue, and help move the international governance system towards greater equity and fairness," Xi said.

Over the past three decades some 700 million rural residents across China shook off poverty. China was the first developing country to meet the Millennium Development Goals target of reducing the population living in poverty by half ahead of the 2015 deadline.

Through decades of hard work, China, now the world's second-largest economy, is aiming to reach its "two centenary goals" -- doubling the 2010 GDP and per-capita income of urban and rural residents and completing the building of a moderately prosperous society by 2020; and building a modern socialist country that is prosperous, strong, democratic, culturally advanced and harmonious by the middle of this century.

He said it is thus important to carry on this tie to the future because of China's economic status in the world.
