CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - State investigators have cited an in-home daycare in Bonita for feeding melatonin to children.10News learned a criminal investigation is underway into Brenda Saucedo Family Child Care. The daycare has had a license since 2007, according to the California Department of Social Services.6-year-old Julius had been at his new daycare for two weeks when he was put down for his first nap time in early August. Julius says he was handed a red drink with white flakes in it."I thought it was Gatorade but it didn't taste like Gatorade," said Julius.Julius drank it all."They told me to lie down, and I fell right asleep," said Julius. When he awoke, he still felt sleepy. After he told his family, his mother Vanessa Cherry says a complaint was filed with the state's Child Care Licensing Program, sparking a surprise inspection. Weeks later, she received their report."I felt angry. I felt like I let my son down. You feel betrayed," said Cherry. Based on interviews and documentation like text messages, state investigators cited the daycare for "providing Melatonin to the daycare children to alter their behavior and/or help them sleep." A spokesperson with the California Department of Social Services says "the licensee told CSDD staff that she administered melatonin to school-age children and melatonin was found on the premises.""How dare you give my kid something without telling me without my acknowledgement ... you don't have the right," said Cherry.Cherry filed a report with deputies, who started an investigation.Melatonin is a natural supplement used as a sleep aid. Possible side effects include dizziness and nausea. There have been a handful of recent criminal cases across the country involving daycare providers and melatonin. Three daycare providers in the Chicago area were charged with giving children melatonin gummy bears before nap time. In Oregon, a woman sentenced to 21 years for feeding melatonin to kids while she went to a tanning salon and the gym. Some of those kids now complain of problems with their sleep cycles. When 10News knocked on the door of the daycare, a woman identifying herself as the owner told us the only child she fed melatonin to is her own child because he has autism. As for Julius, she told 10News she didn't put anything in his drink. When pressed on the specifics of the licensing division report, she said, "I don't want to comment on that any more.""They should be shut down. Your child should be safe in a place you entrust with their safety. This is a parent's worst fear. Someone is giving something to your child without you knowing," said Cherry.Anyone with information on the case is asked the call the San Diego Sheriff's Department Imperial Beach station at 619-498-2400.Cherry says she is planning on filing a lawsuit against the daycare provider. The California Department of Social Services issued the following statements in response to our questions: "The licensee told CDSS staff that she administered melatonin to school-age children, and melatonin was found on the premises. The licensee was informed that this was a violation of state licensing regulations and must cease. She agreed to end the practice, and stated that she understands the danger of administering melatonin and that she will not do so again ... The licensee must post a copy of the complaint investigation report on site, provide a copy to the parents/guardians of children in care at the facility, and provide a copy to parents/guardians of all newly enrolled children in the next 12 months. She also agreed to review educational materials on children’s personal rights in child care, as set forth in state regulations, and provide a summary of the material to the analyst assigned to the case. If this corrective action is not completed, the facility may be subject to civil penalties. In addition, because of the seriousness of the incident, the licensee will be required to attend a follow-up meeting with CDSS staff to discuss the incident and any other concerns about the facility’s compliance with regulations. Such meetings may lead to additional licensing action. The inquiry conducted by CDSS found no evidence of injuries or complications to the children.CDSS takes the allegations in this case seriously. The Department cannot confirm or deny the existence of an investigation. In general, when a facility has experienced a serious 'Type A' violation – an incident creating an immediate risk to the health, safety or personal rights of those in care – it may be subjected to additional scrutiny, including more frequent, unannounced inspections."See how to check the state's report on your child's daycare here. 4700

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - The City of Chula Vista’s controversial Drag Queen Story Time is moving to a different branch to accommodate the number of registrants, city officials said Tuesday. The event, which was supposed to take place at the Otay Ranch library, will now be held at the Civic Center library on Sept. 10 at 4 p.m. “The Chula Vista Public Library welcomes everyone, and programming at the City’s three libraries includes and reflects the diverse communities the libraries serve,” city officials said in a news release. “Hosting drag queens to read and relate with children promotes reading and literacy and sends a positive message of acceptance and tolerance.” A protest against the event was held Thursday, as opponents said they were concerned it would sexually influence children. Chula Vista Police intervened twice between both sides of the issue. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - Neighbors say several aggressive coyotes are treating some South Bay parks as their hunting ground, attacking pets of all sizes.Along East Naples Street, surveillance video captured a hard-to-watch scene a few weeks ago in Patty Prescott's yard: a coyote toying with a feral kitten that Prescott was caring for."I ran out of the house. I started yelling, waving my arms. That's when the coyote dropped the kitten," said Prescott.Sadly, the kitten died. Prescott says coyote sightings have surged in the neighborhood, with more than six pets killed in the last month. Just to the south, at Max Field, home to little league fields, neighbors have been reporting several aggressive coyotes roaming the baseball fields and nearby Loma Verde Park since the start of the pandemic."Frightening. No fear of people. You make noise, and they take a step back and then stare you down. Now they're coming out earlier, throughout the day, any time throughout the day. They're searching and looking," said neighbor Rachel Morineau.Park goers say the coyotes are going after dogs of all sizes. In late May, cellphone video showed one of the coyotes leaping a park fence and attacking a large pit bull, before its owner chased it off.The coyotes' behavior has unnerved neighbors."I don't feel safe, even in my front yard," said Prescott.A group of neighbors has banned together, starting a Gofundme campaign to address the issue. Their concerns grabbed the attention of City Councilman Mike Diaz, who secured funding to trap the coyotes. Because state laws don't allow for them to be relocated, they will be euthanized."It's not something we wanted to do, but they are getting very aggressive, and it's the only option California gives us," said Morineau.Until they're trapped, Prescott plans to defend herself and her other cats."My son sent me a pellet gun, and I plan on using it for my protection," said Prescott.Councilman Diaz says the funding will also help form a long-term plan looking at the presence of coyotes in the city. 2055

CHULA VISTA (KGTV) -- Talk about setting the academics bar high.An unexpected message sent to families of Rancho del Rey Middle School in Otay Ranch Wednesday night left about 2000 students trying to explain why they were required to attend Saturday School.("Could you describe the ruckus, sir," was probably said.)The school blitzed automated phone messages, texts, and emails alerting parents or guardians to have their child at school 8 a.m. Saturday morning for a half day of study."A teacher will come out to greet your student and escort them to a classroom, they are released at 12pm. Students should bring school work or reading materials for a 4 hour period of study," the message said. The school, which broadcast the messages to every registered family at around 5 p.m., confirmed about five hours later that the barrage of alerts was an error. "Earlier today a message about Saturday School was sent to all students. Please disregard the message, it was meant for a select group of students that needed to attend," said Rancho del Rey Middle School Assistant Principal Michael Govea.Since the school offices were closed when the messages were sent, nobody was around to answer calls from anxious families. In the span of that radio silence, trepidation across the student body prompted people to search for answers on Facebook."A few of my son friends received a notice for Saturday school from rancho del Rey middle. These kids are good student with no absences. Any parent receive a message about Saturday school?," one parent posted on a Facebook community page."I hope they send another message out saying it was a mistake or they are going to have a huge drop off on Saturday morning for Saturday school lol," another parent wrote. While the epic Breakfast Club summit won't take place, the school is requiring at least some students to be at campus this weekend. "We will re-send the message Thursday night for those that need to attend. We truly apologize for any inconvenience this may caused you or your student," Govea said. 2055
