SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- An 87-year-old man was beaten during a home invasion in Clairemont Wednesday afternoon. According to San Diego Police, the incident happened on the 4600 block of Firestone Street at 3:02 p.m. Police say three men forced their way into the 87-year-old man’s home before beating and robbing him. "All of a sudden three guys come plowing through my front door, said 'this is a robbery.' I said, 'Come on ... I got nothing here for you.' Which didn’t dissuade them," said Paul Schmidt. Schmidt told 10News he was working on a ceiling fan with the door open when the men broke in. “I had scissors laying there, he grabbed the scissors and he threatened me with it. He said, 'There’s three of us and one of you, and we’re robbing you.' And what could I do, maybe one or two guys I can handle, but three ..." Schmidt added. Schmidt says he fought back, grabbing one of the robber's beards before one of the men held scissors to his throat. "The guy with the beard, he was the meanest, he seemed to be the lead, but he was higher than a kite," Schmidt said. The robbers were able to get away with Schmidt's wallet as well as his red pickup truck and some smaller items. Police arrested two suspects in the attack on July 25. Both suspects have, as of Monday, been charged with robbery, elder abuse and auto theft.The suspects were identified as John Slobig, 59 and Terry Jones, 53. Police say a third suspect is still outstanding and the victim’s vehicle was returned. 1489

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- An Escondido man who pleaded guilty to firing several rounds into the air in a crowded area when he couldn't get tickets to an Ice Cube concert was sentenced to three years behind bars Wednesday. Daniel Elizarraras, 22, pleaded guilty to discharging a gun at the Del Mar Fairgrounds in early September of 2018. Authorities say Elizarraras raised the gun before shooting into the air while he was in a large crowd near the ticket booth. Elizarraras was shot three times in the torso and once in the arm after he pointed the gun at a deputy. RELATED: Man admits he opened fire before Ice Cube concert at Del Mar FairgroundsElizarraras was facing up to 19 years behind bars, but a charge of assault on a peace officer with a semi-automatic weapon was dismissed as part of his plea. Defense Attorney Pedro Bernal said Elizarraras was severely depressed and trying to kill himself by suicide by cop. They asked for a lower sentence.However, the prosecution said he acted violently, causing chaos, and the situation could have been much worse.Judge Kathleen Lewis agreed saying, "I think it’s amazing that no one was injured or killed in this circumstance.”Before the shooting, officials said the venue was at capacity and began turning people away from the horse races and concert. Fights erupted between security guards and would-be concert-goers who were upset that they wouldn’t be allowed into the show. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego man was arrested Saturday after allegedly assaulting an elderly woman at a Central Coast beach parking lot in San Luis Obispo, law officials said.Morro Bay Police Officers responded to a disturbance call at around 1 p.m. at the Morro Rock parking lot on Coleman Drive, authorities said.Witnesses told officers that the suspect assaulted an elderly woman and knocked her to the ground. Numerous people witnessed the attack and went to help the victim, according to police.Officials said the woman was treated by first responders for moderate injuries.In a press release, officials said Brian Robert Sprinkle, 39, of La Jolla, "was participating in a surf competition when he exited the water and assaulted the woman without provocation."Sprinkle was booked in the San Luis Obispo County Jail on felony charges of elder abuse and battery, according to Morro Bay police.Officers also found a firearm with Sprinkle's property and seized it.It is believed the suspect was under the influence of marijuana and hallucinogenic drugs, police said in a statement.Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact the Morro Bay Police Department (805) 772-6225.While police say Sprinkle was taking part in the Big, Bad and Ugly surf competition, surf contest organizers tell KSBY News he was not registered with the contest and is not affiliated with any of the surf clubs that participated.ABC 10News affiliate KSBY News contributed to this report. 1497

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A statue of a dog that sits in the heart of the Gaslamp Quarter is often overlooked, but historians say it says a lot about San Diego's past and its present."A lot of people walk by every day and don't even know the story of who Bum is," said Professor David Miller with the San Diego History Center.Bum the Dog was a stray in the 1890s. According to the History Center, he arrived on a boat without an owner or any identification and made himself at home in his new town."He was really owned by nobody but loved by everybody, and he became a symbol of the new San Diego community," said Miller.Throughout his life in San Diego, Bum would wander through all parts of downtown, often bridging the gap between the upper-class areas north of Market Street and the "seedier" parts of the Gaslamp Quarter."This was the area that you had the bars, the saloons, the brothels," said Miller. "Bum didn't live by the social categories that we had created. So he was just as comfortable going to the firehouse as he was going to the brothel or the Chinese butcher shop."Bum also had adventures. Miller tells a story of how he wound up on a train to LA, spent a few days there, and then came back.He also lost a paw in a fight with another dog. Local veterinarians took care of him whenever he got injured."A surgeon had to amputate part of Bum's leg. So he walked around with a limp for the rest of his life, but he was this hero who had to stand up for himself," said Miller.The statue of Bum, also missing a paw, sits in the garden at the Gaslamp Historical Foundation. Most people who walk by it every day never see it.Other parts of San Diego have paid homage to Bum. The city's dog licenses in the early 1900s had his picture on them. And the History Center's kids club is named after Bum.Miller said Bum's story teaches us all about the importance of history."History is fun stories, it's people's lives, it's dogs getting into fights and kicked by horses and getting on trains to LA," said Miller. "But those stories tell us something more important about ourselves and who we are as San Diego."The statue is located on 4th and Island on the Northeast corner. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A teacher at a middle school in Vista says a look inside her classroom reveals her concerns about the lack of social distancing.Laura Whitehouse’s classroom at Rancho Minerva Middle school. The history teacher has been at the school for seven years, and for the first time, she is anxious about going to school."It’s frightening. It’s frightening," said Whitehouse.She says her fears stem from the lack of social distancing. Her classes have 34 kids, with two kids sitting at each table right next to each other."Distance between each table is about two feet. They’re just on top of each other," said Whitehouse.Whitehouse says the kids are supposed to wear masks, but she sometimes has to remind them to put their masks on, and to maintain social distance."They want to clump together. They want to go to each other’s desk," said Whitehouse.After a few days of in-person learning, Whitehouse on Tuesday received plexiglass for her desk and a HEPA air purifier, but she worries it’s not close to being enough. She says there’s no cleaning between classes, as new students rotate in."The germs that are accumulating are just crazy," said Whitehouse.Amid her concerns, there have been at least four positive COVID-19 cases in the Vista Unified School District, sparking new rules about what will trigger a school to revert to distance learning.Whitehouse, who has asthma, says the new rules don’t address what’s putting her and her students most at risk."I am afraid for them. I just want them and their families to be healthy," said Whitehouse.She’s hoping for more cleaning, and more hybrid learning to reduce the number of kids in the classroom."The fear is this is just going to continue to get worse," said Whitehouse.The teachers union tells ABC 10News they are preparing an OSHA complaint detailing the classroom conditions. Superintendent of Schools Matt Doyle emailed ABC 10News the following statement:"... We have spent more than 2 million dollars on personal protective equipment for our staff and schools. These include facemasks, face shields, gloves, plexiglass barriers for teachers and students, HEPA air filters, additional outside sinks, electrostatic disinfecting machines, posters, and more. Every teacher has been given these supplies ... We will continue to work proactively with teachers and staff to make sure that they get what they need in their classrooms." 2410
