Applebee's announced Tuesday it will close as many as 80 restaurants nationwide as the chain continues to struggle attracting young diners.The announcement comes after Applebee's parent company, DineEquity, said in August it would close more than 100 restaurants.It's not clear which Applebee's locations would close, but according to Fortune, remaining locations will be judged on a number of criteria. “The expected closures will be based on several criteria, including meeting our brand and image standards as well as operational results,” DineEquity told Fortune in a statement.DineEquity also announced it would close up to 40 IHOP locations, though it plans to open as many as 100 new locations of the breakfast chain throughout the country.DineEquity's stock has soared since the announcement, rising nearly 20 percent on Tuesday.Alex Hider is a writer for the E.W. An obituary for a Kansas man who died of COVID-19 this week skewers those who have chosen not to wear masks in public throughout the pandemic.According to his obituary, Marvin Farr died of COVID-19 on Tuesday in western Kansas. Born in 1939 amid the Great Depression and just ahead of World War II, the remembrance says that Farr was born into times where Americans banded together for common causes — "times of loss and sacrifice difficult for most of us to imagine."However, the obituary says that's not the case today."He died in a world where many of his fellow Americans refuse to wear a piece of cloth on their face to protect one another," his obituary reads.Farr's obituary also says that his final days were "harder, scarier and lonelier than necessary" and that "he died in a room not his own, being cared for by people dressed in confusing and frightening ways." It adds that he was not surrounded by friends and family at the time of his death.Farr's obituary describes him as a farmer, veterinarian and a religious man, a person who "would look after those who had harmed him the deepest, a sentiment echoed by the healthcare workers struggling to do their jobs as their own communities turn against them or make their jobs harder."In a Facebook post on Thursday, Farr's son Courtney said he was "in shock" to see how widely the obituary had spread online. He said that while the response has been overwhelmingly positive, he has seen some negative comments, including claims that he had made his father's death about politics."Well, his death was political," Courtney Farr wrote. "He died in isolation with an infectious disease that is causing a national crisis. To pretend otherwise or to obfuscate is also a political decision."Courtney Farr says his father tested positive for the virus last week and had been in isolation since Thanksgiving."I've spent most of this year hearing people from my hometown talk about how this disease isn't real, isn't that bad, only kills old people, masks don't work, etc," Courtney Farr said in a Facebook post. "And because of the prevalence of those attitudes, my father's death was so much harder on him, his family and his caregivers than it should have been. Americans are calling out practices at some car lots more now than ever before.“We found a pattern of abusive and deceptive practices that the auto loan industry has been employing and unfortunately these complaints have sharply increased during the pandemic,” said Lucy Baker, Consumer Program Associate at U.S. Public Interest Research Group (PIRG).Looking at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau's consumer complaint database, the U.S. PIRG found between March and July, there were more than 2,800 auto loan and lease complaints. That's more than any other 5-month period.This includes complaints like not getting auto loan relief, which the CARES Act didn't specify, but some lenders offered to work with customers. Also, complaints about broken payment systems that led to late fees, and issues with loan terms changing or yo-yo financing.“You go into a dealership, you buy a car you sign on the dotted line, but as your driving away, you get a phone call from your dealer that says, ‘hey the financing has fallen through, I’m going to take your car back unless you agree to pay more or pay a higher interest rate,’” said Baker.There were complaints about harassment over repossession and debt, as well as expensive add-ons like warranties, insurance, and service plans.High pressure tactics were another problem.“If you put somebody in a room for a long period of time, they're going to be so frustrated that they are going to want to get out of there and then you can pressure them into buying these things they don’t need,” said Baker.U.S. PIRG is pushing policymakers for auto loan relief programs, banning repossession, debt collection and negative credit reporting.It also has some recommendations for customers: Don't roll an old auto loan into a new loan, avoid buy here – pay here lots, and don’t get focused on low monthly payments. Instead, compare the total cost of the loan including interest paid.Officials also suggest filing complaints with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. (AP) — A fifth horse has died at Santa Anita this fall, the 35th overall fatality since Dec. 26 at the Southern California racetrack.G Q Covergirl injured both her front legs Friday on the training track. The 5-year-old mare was euthanized on the advice of the attending veterinarian.Trained by two-time Kentucky Derby winner Doug O'Neill, G Q Covergirl had six wins in 16 career starts and earnings of 0,730. She had won her last two starts and finished in the money in all of her six races this year. O'Neill also owned the mare in a partnership.The training track has caused the fewest number of breakdowns. However, there have been three deaths on it since the fall meet began on Sept. 27, including one that was believed to be a heart attack. ARVADA, Colo. — An 11-year-old girl penned a letter to Santa filled with heartache, asking him to stop her “sadness” after losing her father and grandmother in a house fire over the summer.Brooklynn Alexander, 11, wrote her Christmas wish and dropped off her letter in Santa’s mailbox in her hometown of Arvada.Amber Klein built the mailbox to ensure Santa received every letter written by kids in Arvada before Christmas.“Every night, I send the letters off to Santa,” Klein said.While helping Santa read through the letters, Klein came across Brooklynn’s wish, a heartfelt letter raw with pain.“Santa, I’ve been suffering from depression and my anger issues have been bad lately. So, what I am trying to say is — I shouldn’t get presents and can you please stop my sadness,” Klein read in the letter.In July, a fire tore through Brooklynn's home, killing her father and grandmother. A neighbor rescued her from inside. She was put on a ventilator and spent more than a week at the hospital. The pain and anguish Brooklynn feels brought memories of Klein’s dad rushing back.“My dad passed away in a house fire and I just immediately wanted to protect her,” Klein said.Klein took to Facebook to track down Brooklynn. It didn’t take long for the two families to bond.“I told her about my dad and how he died,” Klein said. “I showed her the necklace that I wear that has my dad’s ashes in it and now Brooklynn wants the same thing.”Two lives, decades apart, found each other as Brooklynn learns to navigate her pain.“I feel like whether it be my dad or Brooklynn’s dad, that they brought us together,” Kelin said.Through tears, Brooklynn says Kelin’s story gives her hope that life will get better.Brooklynn has since written a second letter to Santa. Her wish list includes a body pillow, fluffy socks and a paint-set with watercolors.
