BEIJING, July 11 (Xinhua) -- Negotiators in the six-party talks on the Korean peninsula nuclear issue reached a "principled consensus" here on Friday on verifying the declaration of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), a Chinese official said Friday.     The top negotiators discussed the specific principles of setting up a verification and inspection mechanism, as well as economic and energy aid to the DPRK, the Chinese delegation's spokesman Qin Gang told reporters. Qin Gang said that the top negotiators reached a "principled consensus" on Friday on verifying the declaration of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), which is setting up a verification and inspection mechanism, as well as economic and energy aid to the DPRK. The six parties achieved some progress on the verification mechanism, reaching a principled consensus," Qin said, without elaborating. "The specific consensus will be announced very soon."     Despite different interests, concerns and stances, the parties were striving for issuing a joint document at the end of this round of discussion, Qin said.     He said the top negotiators' meeting, which started Thursday afternoon, went smoothly with "sound atmosphere" and "high efficiency." The heads of delegations meeting would continue Saturday morning, Qin said. "We have made some progress so far...hope we could see a document contain consensus of all parties and measures of next phase when the meeting conclude."     The parties were trying to finish the meeting on Saturday as scheduled, Qin said. "Each delegation is working toward that goal, not only to end tomorrow but to end with results."     On Friday's meeting, negotiators also exchanged views on establishing the peace and security mechanism in northeast Asia.     Besides, the working groups of denuclearization and economic and energy aid held a meeting respectively, mapping out the measures to implement the consensus reached by heads of delegations, Qin said.     The current meeting, held after a nine-month stalemate, came after the DPRK handed over the long-awaited nuclear declaration list late June and then blew up a cooling tower in its main nuclear reactor at Yongbyon.     The six-party talks, launched in 2003, included China, the United States, DPRK, Republic of Korea, Russia and Japan.

BEIJING, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) -- The infant milk powder produced by most companies in China was safe according to the nationwide check results following the Sanlu baby formula scam, the country's State Council departments said on Tuesday.     The State Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine said it had tested 491 batches of baby milk powder produced by all the 109 companies in the country in a special inspection move. The infant milk powder produced by most companies in China was safe according to the nationwide check results following the Sanlu baby formula scam, the country's State Council departments said on Tuesday. 69 batches from 22 companies nationwide were found containing melamine, a chemical which had tainted Sanlu's baby formula and led to kidney stone illness of more than 1,200 infants across the country.     The number of companies with melamine-tainted milk accounted for 20.18 percent of the total of milk powder companies in China. And the number of tainted batches accounted for 14.05 percent of the total batches tested.     The melamine content in the Sanlu brand reached 2,563 mg per kg, the highest among all the samples. In other samples, the range was from 0.09 mg to 619 mg per kilogram. Parents with their babies wait for examinations at a children's hospital in Hefei, capital of east China's Anhui Province Sept. 16, 2008.Authorities have sealed the problematic milk powder products in companies, or removed them from store shelves and recalled all those sold.     Safe powder milk products will continue to be sold on market to ensure enough supply, according to the State Council.     To ensue the quality safety, the quality inspection bodies will dispatch supervisors to each baby milk powder company since Wednesday to oversee the quality of raw materials and production procedures. Every batch of products will be checked.     Sanlu, which is 43 percent owned by New Zealand dairy company Fonterra, has been ordered to halt production. The Hebei provincial government decided on Tuesday to dispatch four working teams to Sanlu Group for a thorough investigation.     So far, four milk dealers have been arrested and 22 others detained for questioning by Hebei police.

He also congratulated the leader on the 60th anniversary of the founding of the DPRK, wishing it even more and greater achievements in the future.     Kim, who is the general secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea (WPK) and chairman of the National Defence Commission, asked Xi to convey his greetings to President Hu, general secretary of the the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC). He praised the courageous deeds of the CPC, the Chinese government, the armed forces and the people of China during the rescue mission. He also proposed the two countries strengthen coordination on regional and international issues of common concern.     Kim said the DPRK-China friendship is an invaluable heritage handed down by the previous generations of revolutionaries of either nation. This friendship has been and will always be an invaluable treasure, he added.     It is the firm and unchangeable stance of the DPRK to unswervingly work for the development of the traditional DPRK-China friendship, the top DPRK leader pledged.     The year 2009 marks the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries, which will jointly host DPRK-China friendship year activities.     The DPRK is ready to take this opportunity to join hands with China to further advance friendly and cooperative mutual relations, Kim said.     The two leaders also exchanged views on the six-party talks aimed at denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula.

  

HONG KONG, July 6 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping said here Sunday he is glad to see that the Olympic spirit has won common acknowledgment among the general public in Hong Kong.     He made the remarks when meeting with delegates of Hong Kong athletes and volunteers set to participate or serve in the Beijing Olympics and Paralympics.     "I am very glad to see that you are all in such a good mood and so energetic. This is the spirit we need to stage a high-level Olympic Games with distinctive features," Xi told the delegates. BEIJING, July 15 (Xinhua) -- A senior official of the Communist Party of China (CPC) said here Tuesday that China values its relations with South Africa and would like to work together with the latter to expand bilateral exchanges and cooperation and enhance the understanding and friendship between their peoples.     Wang Gang, member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, made the remarks while meeting with Blade Nzimande, secretary general of the South African Communist Party (SACP).     China and South Africa have maintained close high-level visits,frequent exchanges, fruitful cooperation, and coordination in international affairs since their diplomatic relations began in 1998, Wang said.
