Brian Cisco isn’t looking for sympathy. But as he prepares to spend time behind bars, Cisco opens up, sharing his story on how he got here.Life these days for Cisco is about enjoying every single second, because soon, he’ll be behind bars. Cisco says he's come to terms with what he did, but he worries about leaving his fiancé, Susie. "At first, I think neither one of us really realized that, you know, prison was going to happen,” Cisco says. Cisco hired a former federal prisoner turned prison coach to help him learn the ropes. “I started kind of looking online, you know, trying to find some sort of resource, something to help me understand what I was going through, what was going to happen,” Cisco says. After finding the prison coach, Justin, on YouTube, Cisco paid ,000 for the coach’s help. He learned everything from how to act, how to avoid the TV room, because that's where fights can break out, and how to avoid getting too friendly with corrections officers so that other inmates don’t consider you a snitch. “My routine will be, like, lay low, stay under the radar,” Cisco says. While in prison, Cisco says he plans to focus on the simple things. “One thing Justin helped me understand and recognize is that there is an end date to this,” Cisco says.As his day to report to prison gets closer, Cisco says he'll head there better prepared and ready to become a better person and an even better husband to Susie. 1776

At an elevation above 8,000 feet, Aspen Ruggerfest is taking the sport of rugby to new heights.This four-day tournament attracts athletes of all ages and genders, with players looking to show off their skills against some of the best competition in the country.“There’s a lot of US players still out here in Ruggerfest,” said Alec Parker.Parker is an Aspen legend. He’s played for his hometown team, the Gentlemen of Aspen Rugby Football Club, and represented the United States in four Rugby World Cups.Now, retired from rugby, Parker says playing in the Aspen Ruggerfest is equally as important as playing internationally.“I love this weekend. It’s the best,” Parker said of Aspen Ruggerfest. “Best weekend of the year for sure.”Now in it’s 52nd year, Aspen Ruggerfest continues to grow by attracting athletes from across the country and across the world.“The sport is fun as hell,” said former Aspen RFC coach Freddie Waititi.Waititi says rugby is the fastest growing team sport in the country, and the numbers support it. In 2014, the Sports and Fitness Industry Association reported a 350 percent growth in participation over a five-year period.“It’s fun watching the young guys that we coach being able to pick up the things that we are trying to pass on to them and actually use them,” Waititi said.Despite more people now playing their favorite sport, the Aspen team is mourning the loss of one of its own.“It’s quite a weird one this year,” said one an Aspen player. “We’re missing one very important person that’s been a part of Aspen rugby for longer than I can even remember.” On the night before the Gents first match, the team held a team dinner and dedicated it Jerry Hatem, a former Aspen player-coach, who lost his life in a snowmobile accident this summer.“(Jerry) would be sitting here having a beer after lining the field for the whole day with bruises blood all over his face,” the Aspen player said. “He just loves rugby and is a great guy.”This a game that transcends athletics, with players saying their teams are more like their families. And when the Aspen Gents took the pitch, Hatem’s family was watching from the sidelines, saying jerry would be proud.“(Jerry’s) saying it by what we’re witnessing here,” said Mike Hatem, Jerry’s brother. “This whole community just comes together.” Because whether rookie or old boy, local or import, rugby culture is all about camaraderie, and Aspen Ruggerfest embodies that, at a higher level. 2470

Another person has died from an outbreak of Legionnaires' disease in North Carolina, bringing the death toll to four. None of the victims have been identified by authorities and health officials have not discussed the circumstances of their deaths.There have been 141 confirmed cases of Legionnaires' disease, an airborne lung infection, or Pontiac Fever, a milder form of the disease since last month. Health officials said nearly all of those infected were attending the NC Mountain State Fair in Fletcher between September 6 and 15.The outbreak has been linked to a hot tubs display in one events center and officials said it took place during the last five days of the fair, a preliminary report shows. In addition to the four deaths, 94 people were hospitalized. There were no other significant sources of aerosolized water -- small droplets of water or mist that can be inhaled -- at the event center, and no other ongoing potential sources of exposure identified, the health department has said.Legionnaires' disease is a lung infection contracted when people breathe in the Legionella bacteria through a mist or by accidentally getting water into their lungs that contains the bacteria.The disease is serious but can be treated with antibiotics, the department said. U.S. veteran Ash Legion had a hard time transitioning to life outside the military. “For a long time, it was just a race to get blacked out,” said the former Marine Corps. Sgt.Now with the help of Operation Surf, a surf camp designed to help veterans, Legion has been able to step out of the darkness by stepping into the water. “I’m in a good place. Everybody is having a good time. Party wave!” said Legion. “It’s given me so much than I could have imagined. Honestly when I moved here, I had a wetsuit and I had no one to surf with. I had no friends. I didn’t know anybody here and then I met Dan.Dan Szentesi, lead surf instructor for Operation Surf, has spent the past seven years teaching veterans how to ride waves. “I don’t want to sound cliché, but a lot of people talk about how it saves their life,” said Szentesi.Operation Surf is now in its 10th year – and is growing, going from a weekend event once a year to now operating nearly year-round in northern, central and southern California.“Watching people catch their first wave is pretty amazing. It’s like a light goes off and people tend to feel like it’s something that they haven’t experienced before…something they’ve been missing,” said Szentesi. After finding surfing, these veterans say they can’t imagine life without it. “It’s made a big difference. I found my solace again,” said Ron Holtgrew, who was a Lance Corporal in the Marine Corps.Once a week, Holtgrew drives two hours from Fresno to the central coast to get in the ocean. “I was one of those vets who didn’t think that I needed this program. I went through it and once I figured out what they were trying to do here with the healing powers of the ocean. I don’t stop coming,” said Holtgrew. The healing powers can help rinse away pain and PTSD. “It’s pretty damn close to a gun fight,” said Jordan Meyers, a U.S. veteran. “Just sheer adrenaline but you come out smiling instead of coming out kind of messed up in the head.”Operation Surf’s funding comes completely from donations and grants – investments in the sport and the soul. “As a spouse of a veteran myself, I started witnessing my husband come home, he smiled a little bit more, he laughed, he was telling me who he was surfing with how he got that epic left,” said Mackenzie Rana with Operation Surf.And finally feeling right by helping these vets transition from soldiers to civilians – and now surfers. “It’s so healing on so many levels, mentally, emotionally, spiritually, this is the healthiest lifestyle I’ve ever lives.” 2656
