BEIJING, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) -- The United States has repeatedly blocked investment from Chinese companies on national security grounds, a protectionist move that will only harm its own interests, analysts say.Eight U.S. congressmen recently asked the Obama administration to scrutinize a deal between Chinese telecom equipment giant Huawei and the American operator Sprint Nextel on national security grounds. It was not the first time Huawei's attempts to break into the U.S. market have been stymied. Earlier its buyout attempt of 3Com was summarily dismissed by the U.S. government.Citing national security concerns again, a bipartisan group of 50 lawmakers in July requested that the government investigate an investment project of China's Anshan Iron and Steel Group (Ansteel), China's fourth largest steelmaker, which plans to establish a joint rebar venture with a U.S. partner in Mississippi."It is inappropriate for some U.S. lawmakers to label regular business behavior as a move that threatens national security," Yao Jian, a spokesman for the Ministry of Commerce, recently said about Ansteel's investment plan."I hope the United States can create a better investment environment for Chinese enterprises," he said.Chinese analysts said the actions were sheer protectionism, adding that national security concerns is only a lame excuse by U.S. authorities, whose true intention is to protect the interests of domestic enterprises and industries. Moreover, standing up to China's allegedly unfair trade practices can easily earn the congressmen much needed political chips in the upcoming mid-term election in November, the analysts said. The setback that Huawei and Ansteel suffered is only the tip of the iceberg. Actually, blocking investment from Chinese companies in the name of national security has morphed into a knee-jerk reaction that could only harm America's own interests.Emcore Corporation, a U.S. fiber optics producer, announced in late June that it has abandoned a joint venture in partnership with China's Tangshan Caofeidian Investment Corporation because the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States "has certain regulatory concerns about the transaction."

BEIJING, Sept. 30 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said Thursday that the government will keep housing price at a reasonable and stable level.Addressing a grand reception marking the 61th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, Wen said the nation will improve support for the elderly, medical care and other social security schemes, to allow all the citizens to benefit from China's economic growth.Present at the reception were Chinese President Hu Jintao and other senior Chinese leaders Wu Bangguo, Jia Qinglin, Li Changchun, Xi Jinping, Li Keqiang, He Guoqiang, Zhou Yongkang and more than 1,000 Chinese and foreign personages.Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao addresses the reception to celebrate the National Day at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, capital of China, Sept. 30, 2010. China's State Council (Cabinet) on Thursday held the reception to mark the 61st anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, which falls on Oct. 1.Premier Wen reiterated the country's adherence to the paths of scientific development, reform and opening-up, and peaceful development."China's development will neither harm anyone nor pose a threat to anyone," he said, adding that the argument that a strong country is bound to seek hegemony does not apply to China.Wen said this year is the last year for implementing China's 11th five-year plan of economic and social development. He reviewed the country's "new historic changes" over the last five years, citing enhanced productivity and national strength, improvements in people's lives, and the country's increased international standing and influence."In the last two years in particular, we adopted timely and forceful measures to counter the severe impact of the global financial crisis," said the premier."We have prevailed over numerous difficulties and become one of the first countries to achieve an economic rebound," he added.Saying the country is at a "new historical starting point," Wen said the coming five years will be crucial to China's effort to build a moderately prosperous society. He called for joint efforts with compatriots in Hong Kong and Macao to promote long-term prosperity and stability in the two regions. The premier also vowed to join hands with compatriots in Taiwan to promote peaceful development across the Taiwan Strait and fulfill the peaceful reunification cause.

LONDON, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) -- Some western commentators' critical comments concerning China's burgeoning relationship with Africa are "largely misplaced," says a Financial Times editorial.Wednesday's editorial - "China's new scramble for Africa" - said Western-led development strategies, however well meaning, did not break the cycle of under-development in Africa. Chinese investments, made for sound business reasons and boosting employment and growth, offer new hope and an alternative way forward, the editorial said. The infrastructure that the Chinese are building will also have positive spin-off effects for industries outside of natural resources. Chinese traders have brought cheap consumer goods to Africa. And, as labor costs rise at home, Chinese manufacturers may look at Africa with new interest, as a base for production, the editorial said.To the Western countries that uphold the spirit of competition, there's no reason to complain about China's strengthening its relationship with Africa, the editorial said. One reason that African governments often love doing business with the Chinese is that they are much less likely to condition their investments on improvements in government, and the pragmatic attitude of the Chinese government should be appreciated, the editorial said.

ATHENS, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Sunday pledged to support a stable euro and strengthen cooperation with the European Union (EU)."China will not reduce its euro-bond holdings and China supports a stable euro," Wen said during a speech at the Greek parliament.China and the EU have signed a string of important trade investment contracts to help Europe overcome its financial difficulties, said Wen who arrived in Athens on Saturday on a three-day official visit.Since the outbreak of the global financial crisis, Chinese leaders have visited Europe several times and had frequent meetings with EU leaders, noted the Chinese premier. That, he said, shows Beijing attaches great importance to China-EU relations and "wants to join you in a concerted effort to tide over difficulties."After some European countries suffered sovereign debt crisis earlier this year, Wen said, his government announced many times that Beijing firmly supports the measures adopted by the EU and the International Monetary Fund."China is sincere in enhancing cooperation with Europe and we are confident about the prospects of our cooperation," Wen said. Thanks to joint efforts, China-EU trade has already exceeded the pre-crisis level, he said."China is committed to advancing China-EU relations. This is not an expediency, but a long-term strategic policy," Wen said.
