VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - Did you know Vista was once the Strawberry Capital of the World? The North San Diego County city invites you to celebrate its history this Sunday at the annual Vista Strawberry Festival. In the 1960s and 1970s, strawberries from Vista were shipped around the world. The crates were so popular, strawberries in the Netherlands became known as “vistas”, according to the festival’s website. The community celebration, to be held May 26, brings events including a run, Little Ms. Strawberry Shortcake pageant, and contests for pie eating and beer stein-holding. Visitors can also enjoy bands, a wine and beer garden, vendors, and carnival rides. The festival runs from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Main Street and Hanes Place in downtown Vista. VISTA (KGTV) — A driver accused of crossing into wrong-way traffic and killing an Escondido cyclist turned to a witness after the crash and said, “I’m sorry,” before speeding off, according to court testimony Tuesday.Jamison Connor, 41, appeared in a Vista courtroom for a preliminary hearing on several charges. VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- The Vista Unified School District confirmed that a student at one of its high schools tested positive for COVID-19.According to the district, a positive case in a student was reported at Mission Vista High School on Tuesday, resulting in about 130 students in the four classes the positive student attended to be placed into a 14-day quarantine. Those students will pivot to virtual learning.Staff members involved in these classes or who may have come into contact with the student were also quarantined, the district said."The student did not come into close contact with every student; however, since this is our first incident, we are proceeding with an abundance of caution," a district release stated.District officials said schools will reopen at normal capacity on Friday.The positive test comes just two days after Vista Unified reopened its schools for in-person instruction.Part of the reopening plan, known as “Vista Classic,” includes attempts to have social distancing as much as possible. The district will allow as many as 38 students in a single classroom, so desks will not be spaced six feet apart.According to the district dashboard, prior to the full reopening, there were four confirmed positive COVID-19 cases at schools between Sept. 8-Oct. 19. 1300

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court sounded skeptical Monday that President Donald Trump could categorically exclude people living in the country illegally from the population count used to allot seats among the states in the House of Representatives.But it also appeared possible that the justices could avoid a final ruling on the issue until they know how broadly the Trump administration acts in its final days in office and whether the division of House seats is affected.No president has tried to do what Trump outlined in a memo in July — remove millions of noncitizens from the once-a-decade head count of the U.S. population that determines how many seats each state gets in the House of Representatives, as well as the allocation of some federal funding.Justice Amy Coney Barrett was among several members of the court who said the administration’s argument for broad discretion in deciding whom to exclude is troublesome because “a lot of the historical evidence and long-standing practice really cuts against your position.”The court decided to hear the case on a fast track, based on the administration’s plea for a decision by early January, when Trump is required by law to transmit census numbers to Congress. The Census Bureau is supposed to send the data to Trump by Dec. 31. However, the bureau said last month they are checking anomalies and the data will be delayed. They did not give a new date, only saying they hope some data will be available in January.
