SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The CEO of a La Jolla-based financial services firm pleaded guilty Wednesday to defrauding shareholders, falsifying tax returns and operating an unlicensed money services business.David Nava, head of Surf Financial Group LLC, worked with others to convert publicly traded companies' debt into unrestricted stock under false pretenses, and then sold the stock, despite being banned since 1994 by federal securities regulators from taking part in the securities industry, according to federal prosecutors.Prosecutors say Nava, 62, directed others to write fraudulent attorney opinion letters that facilitated removing restrictions on stocks so they could be sold, in circumvention of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission's regulations on the offer and sale of securities.The Department of Justice said brokerage firms cleared the sale of shares of the restricted stocks on the basis of those letters, allowing Nava and others to sell millions of shares, then move the proceeds into bank accounts under his control.In addition to his plea to a federal count of conspiracy to commit securities fraud, Nava also pleaded guilty to operating an unlicensed money transmitting business, which he used to move millions of dollars in financial proceeds, and a tax fraud count for falsifying federal tax returns from 2014 to 2016, in which he underreported Surf Financial's profits in order to conceal his true income and tax liability, according to the Department of Justice.Sentencing is slated for Jan. 8 in San Diego federal court. 1556

Had she gone to trial and been convicted of forgery and grand theft, she would have faced a potential three-year, eight-month prison sentence, according to the prosecution.Per the terms of her probation, Birchman will have to complete 15 public work service days and make ,000 in restitution to the PTA. If she pays the ,000, her forgery conviction will be reduced to a misdemeanor, according to prosecutors.Birchman, 30, was taken into custody in early January at her Temecula home on an arrest warrant issued in November. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The family of a 19-year-old San Diego State University student who died after falling from his bunk bed and striking his head following a night of drinking has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against several defendants, including the university, the fraternity he was pledging for, and the manufacturer of the bed he fell from.The lawsuit filed last week in San Diego Superior Court alleges Dylan Hernandez was hazed by members of Phi Gamma Delta just prior to his death, and that fraternity members not only failed to obtain medical attention for him after he became extremely intoxicated, but also attempted to hide evidence of misconduct following his fatal fall.Hernandez fell from his bed on Nov. 7, 2019, and died in a hospital the following day.RELATED: Investigation completed into death of SDSU student who died after fall from bedThe lawsuit alleges he attended a "Big Brother, Little Brother" fraternity event that had pledges "screamed at and demeaned, beaten with paddles and hands, and forced to consume shots of vodka and rum to the point of intoxication."Following his hospitalization, the lawsuit alleges Phi Gamma Delta members instructed others to remove incriminating material from their cell phones and in group chats, members were told to "Keep your mouths shut!" and "Just remember, Silence is Golden!"Representatives with Phi Gamma Delta did not respond to a request for comment.RELATED: Autopsy report of SDSU student who died after fall from bed releasedIts national office permanently suspended its SDSU chapter in August and SDSU expelled the fraternity until 2030.In July, it was announced that no criminal charges would be pursued in connection with Hernandez's death, which was ruled accidental.
