SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Father’s Day boat trip off the San Diego coast led to a rare wakeboarding encounter with dozens of dolphins for a Pacific Beach boy and his family. “It was a quick little boat ride and we saw paradise up there,” said Emiliano Gallego of Crown Point. Gallego and his three children decided to take a boat ride about 7:30 a.m. on a gloomy Sunday. They were about a mile off Pacific Beach when they realized their 24-foot Yamaha ski boat was surrounded by dolphins. “It was impressive,” said Gallego, who believes there were thousands of dolphins swimming with the pod. Gallego’s 9-year-old son Demi, an avid wakeboarder, grabbed his gear and jumped in the water. Gallego recorded the incredible scene. “At first, he was scared. He eventually just started enjoying the ride with the dolphins,” Gallego said. Gallego’s younger son and daughter didn’t want to jump in. “Too many dolphins,” said Gallego. After the spectacular ride, the family went out to breakfast, amazed at what they saw. “That was the best gift ever,” said Gallego. 1059

SAN DIEGO (CNS) -The county Health and Human Services Agency Friday reported two unrelated tuberculosis cases, and that people may have been exposed to the bacteria at Southwestern and San Diego City colleges, and on a Metropolitan Transit System bus route. The county is working with officials from both community colleges and MTS to notify those who may have been exposed to TB. The periods of possible exposure were:Aug. 26 to Dec. 10, 2019 at Southwestern College;July 26, to Aug. 5, 2019 and Aug. 19 to Dec. 16, 2019 at San Diego City College;July 26 to Aug. 5, 2019 and Aug. 19 to Dec. 16, 2019, Monday through Friday on MTS Bus Route 12, with two departure routes: from Skyline Hills between 7:59 and 8:47 a.m. to City College Transit Center, and from City College Transit Center between 7:04 and 8:04 p.m. to Skyline Hills.Symptoms of active TB include persistent cough, fever, night sweats and unexplained weight loss, said Wilma Wooten, county public health officer. "Most people who are exposed to tuberculosis do not develop the disease," she added.Tuberculosis can be treated and cured with medication. People with TB symptoms or are immuno-compromised are encouraged to see their medical healthcare provider, according to the county.According to the county, the number of tuberculosis cases has decreased since the early 1990s, with 265 cases reported in 2019.Free TB testing will be available at Southwestern College Student Health Services, 900 Otay Lakes Road, from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday. San Diego City College students may contact the county TB Control Program to arrange for testing or visit the Student Health Clinic, which will reopen Feb. 3.The county advised Metropolitan Transit System passengers to contact their medical provider or HHSA to arrange for TB testing.More information is available by calling the Southwestern Students Health Services, 619-482-6354; Dotti Cordell, of the San Diego City College Student Health Clinic, 619-388-3903; and the county TB Control Program at 619- 692-8621. 2082

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Violent crime in San Diego County rose in the first half of the year for the fifth consecutive year, according to a report released Tuesday by the San Diego Association of Governments. The report by SANDAG's Criminal Justice Research Division found that the mid-year number of violent crimes in the county was 5,545, up from 5,510 last year; 5,421 in 2017; 5,361 in 2016; and 5,330 in 2015. The five-year increase amounts to a 4% bump in violent crime. Reports of property crime went the opposite direction, falling from 30,447 in 2015 to 27,236 in 2019, an 11% decrease. The mid-year numbers of violent and property crimes in 2019 are vastly different from 2009, when the city received 6,256 violent crime reports and 35,204 property crime reports. Violent crime reports dropped 11.4% in that span, mainly because robbery reports fell from 1,931 to 1,411, according to the SANDAG report. Despite the overall drop in robbery reports, this year's number increased 5% compared to the same six-month period last year. Arson reports saw the largest drop from last year to this year -- falling 28% from 190 to 136 -- while homicides dropped from 40 to 38. Reported property crimes fell 22.6% from 2009 to 2019 and residential burglaries saw the biggest decrease in that time, dropping 53.9% from 4,460 to 2,054. Larceny over 0 was the only category to increase from 2009 to 2019, rising from 7,578 to 8,527. Reports of rape fell to 539 after reaching 604 at the midway point of 2018. However, numbers since 2015 may be somewhat deceiving, as California law enforcement broadened the definition of rape in 2015 to include ``male victims, sodomy, penetration with any body part or object, and no longer requires force,'' according to SANDAG Division Director of Criminal Justice Dr. Cynthia Burke. As a result, some crimes that would have been classified as aggravated assaults are now considered rapes and some crimes that would not have been considered violent crimes are now captured in these statistics, Burke said. Violent crimes include homicide, rape, robbery and aggravated assault. Property crimes include burglary, larceny and motor vehicle theft. According to the report, San Diego law enforcement has received an average of 31 reports of violent crime and 150 reports of property crime per day during 2019's first half. 2353
