ANTIOCH, Tennessee (WSMV) -- Exactly one week after a gunman opened fire on a Waffle House in Antioch killing four people and injuring others, community members gathered at the site to remember the victims.At exactly 3:20 this morning, people held a moment of silence, prayers and sang a song at Waffle House in honor of the victim's of last week's shooting.The group Partners in the Struggle organized the event at Waffle House this Sunday morning so that the community could gather in prayer as well as offer comfort and support to those affected by last week's shooting."What I would tell the families is [to] stay strong," said Earl Jordan of Partners in the Struggle. "God's grace and mercy [are] tremendous and we're praying. We're praying for them. We're praying for James Shaw Jr. Thank God for him, for coming out of his own self to save himself and save others."Supporters say the goal of the event is to continue the healing process and help the community move forward from the terrible tragedy.At 7 a.m., community members held another moment of silence, "standing tall" five minutes for or each of the eight victims of the Waffle House shooting.The group stood silently for 40 minutes total. 1212

An accused serial killer, known as the “Golden State Killer,” is expected to plead guilty Monday in person, in a university ballroom.Joseph James DeAngelo was arrested in April 2018 at his home near Sacramento, California. He is accused of heinous crimes, including rape and murder, in almost a dozen California counties in both Southern and Northern California during the 1970s to 80s.DeAngelo is expected to plead guilty at Monday’s hearing to 13 counts of murder, 13 counts of kidnapping and admit responsibility for another 60+ rapes and other crimes. As part of the plea deal announced earlier this month, DeAngelo would be sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole in August. Victims and victims' families are not expected to make comments on Monday. They will get a chance to make victim impact statements later this summer.Monday’s hearing will be held in the Sacramento State University Union Ballroom, a large room that can hold roughly 2,000 people for a reception, according the university’s website. Previous hearings in DeAngelo’s case have been packed with victims, victims’ families, media and other interested parties.The in-person hearing on Monday will include temperature checks and required face coverings, according to the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office.The crimes associated with the “Golden State Killer” were chronicled in the book “I’ll Be Gone in the Dark”, written by Michelle McNamara. As a variant strain of the coronavirus spreads through the United Kingdom, Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease, said in an interview on ABC News on Tuesday that it’s possible the variant is in the US."That's certainly possible I mean, when you have this amount of spread within a place like the UK, that you really need to assume that it's here already, and certainly is not the dominant strain, but I would not be surprised at all if it is already here," said Fauci on ABC News.The variant strain has fueled lockdowns and fears in the UK. It also has prompted much of the world to cut off travel to the UK. Health officials fear that the variant strain spreads more easily.The United States has not cut travel between the two countries. Fauci does not expect that to be necessary.“That's not that's not really in the cards right now, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the requirement of testing is something that is being actively considered right now," Fauci said.The CDC reminded the public that viruses often mutate. The CDC added that it’s investigating why this version differs from the disease caused by other versions that are currently circulating.As travel remains permitted between the two nations, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo criticized officials for not cutting off travel. Cuomo did note that several airlines began testing passengers arriving in New York from the UK for the virus."Right now, this variant in the U.K. is getting on a plane and flying to JFK. Right now today,” Cuomo said. “One-hundred twenty countries require a test. We don't. Other European countries have done a ban. We haven't. And today that variant is getting on a plane and landing at JFK. How many times in life do you have to make the same mistake before you learn. Be one of the 120 countries that requires a test before you get on a plane to come to the U.S. This is the mistake we made."The United Kingdom has implemented some of its strongest lockdowns since the onset of the pandemic in recent days. As COVID-19 cases continue to climb across Arizona, so too are the number of people lost to the novel coronavirus. Many Arizonans wonder if the state reopened too soon.From the moment casinos across the state opened their doors, thousands lined up to get through them. Now, the family of an employee at The Lone Butte Gila River Casino says reopening cost their father his life."It feels like a bad dream that I want to wake up from, but I can't," said Shawne Jackson, fighting through tears.Jackson is mourning the loss of her father, Robert Washington Jr. The patriarch of their family and her hero. The pain they feel now has influenced them to take a stand."I don't believe he was comfortable returning to work. He was very concerned," said Jackson.Washington was 68, a diabetic and had just recently beat prostate cancer.In May, when casinos were given the green light to open by Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey, Washington, a security guard for Gila River Casino Lone Butte in Chandler, was called back to work."He was tested prior to going back, and from what I understand, he tested negative," said Jackson.She says her father had a strong work ethic and financially needed to return to work. As someone with preexisting conditions, his family says he was told he could drive a golf cart around the perimeter of the casino and have limited interaction with customers. Still, they say he was posted at the door instead. He was diagnosed with COVID-19 five days later. Symptoms began appearing shortly after. He was hospitalized and later died on June 11.His relatives aren't the only ones to come forward regarding the safety inside Gila River casinos.KNXV has received multiple emails from other employees saying people continue to get sick and managers are keeping others in the dark regarding positive tests.Pointing out a cavalier attitude towards masks by customers, Jackson believes that starts at the top with the governor."They're looking to you to lead by example, and when you tell them that it's okay to not mask up, that's sad, that's a tragedy because you're putting innocent people in harm's way," said Jackson.However, just last Thursday, Gov. Ducey publicly said masks should be worn if social distancing is a problem, but did not mandate the use of them.Gila River instituted several precautions before opening, saying they would only operate at 50% capacity, provide masks and install Plexiglas barriers near slot machines. Jackson says she doesn't believe it's been strenuously enforced. Applebee's announced Tuesday it will close as many as 80 restaurants nationwide as the chain continues to struggle attracting young diners.The announcement comes after Applebee's parent company, DineEquity, said in August it would close more than 100 restaurants.It's not clear which Applebee's locations would close, but according to Fortune, remaining locations will be judged on a number of criteria. “The expected closures will be based on several criteria, including meeting our brand and image standards as well as operational results,” DineEquity told Fortune in a statement.DineEquity also announced it would close up to 40 IHOP locations, though it plans to open as many as 100 new locations of the breakfast chain throughout the country.DineEquity's stock has soared since the announcement, rising nearly 20 percent on Tuesday.Alex Hider is a writer for the E.W.
