SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A firefighter suffered a minor hand injury Thursday morning while working to extinguish a fire that damaged a North Park business, authorities said.The blaze was reported around 5:30 a.m. at a single-story business on El Cajon Boulevard near Illinois Street, just west of Interstate 805, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.Crews responded to the scene and found smoke and flames coming from the roof of the building, the agency reported. No one was inside the building at the time and firefighters knocked down the flames within about 20 minutes.One firefighter was taken to Sharp Memorial Hospital for treatment of a minor hand injury.The cause of the blaze was under investigation. 724

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 64-year-old taco truck owner was robbed at gunpoint Friday evening in the Linda Vista neighborhood.The victim was cleaning his truck at 6800 Linda Vista Rd. about 8:30 p.m. when the suspect walked up and demanded money, according to San Diego Police Department Officer Robert Heims.As the victim turned around, he saw the suspect pointing a gun at him and the suspect again demanded money, Heims said.The victim gave up an unknown amount of cash and the suspect ran off, last seen southbound in the 6800 block of Linda Vista Road, Heims said.The suspect was described as a 20-year-old Hispanic man, 5 feet 9 inches tall with a thin build, wearing blue jeans and a gray hoodie with a gray bandana around his face, Heims said.Anyone with information was asked to call San Diego Police Robbery Division detectives at 619-531-2299 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477. 889

(KGTV) -- The California Assembly has voted to ban the manufacture and sale of new fur products.Animal welfare groups have rallied around the bill, arguing the fur industry is inhumane and pointing to alternatives like faux fur.But opponents of the bill have countered that the proposed law would devastate fur retailers and manufacturers.Some California cities, including Los Angeles, San Francisco and Berkeley, have already passed ordinances banning the sale of fur.The New York City council has also considered banning fur sales in America's biggest city.The bill would not include used fur products or furs used for traditional purposes. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 26-year-old motorcyclist was killed Saturday after losing control of his bike, hitting the center median curb and continuing across the lanes of Scripps Poway Parkway in the Miramar Ranch area, San Diego police said.The crash took place on the Scripps Poway Parkway, near 11800 Spruce Run Dr., at 1 a.m., SDPD Officer J. Buttle said.The motorcyclist riding a 2017 Yamaha was moving at a high rate of speed, and failed to negotiate the rightward bend in the road, Buttle said. The man ended up along the south curb line.He was pronounced dead at the scene, Buttle said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A former biologist at the San Diego Zoo was sentenced Wednesday to six months in federal prison for embezzling hundreds of thousands of dollars by cashing payments for false invoices he created.Matthew John Anderson, 50, of Ramona, pleaded guilty earlier this year to a theft charge for taking more than 6,000 from the zoo over the course of eight years. The U.S. Attorney's Office said that as a citizen of the United Kingdom, Anderson will likely face deportation once his sentence is completed.He has paid the full restitution amount back to the zoo, the U.S. Attorney's Office said."For years, this defendant took advantage of the trust of one of our city's most beloved institutions," said U.S. Attorney Robert Brewer. "His theft compromised the San Diego Zoo's world-renowned conservation work, made possible by government grants, charitable donations and the work of thousands of unpaid volunteers."Prosecutors said Anderson created dozens of fake invoices -- often using the name of fictitious vendors -- then submitted the invoices to the zoo for payment for products that were never purchased or received. Additionally, he submitted invoices for his personal expenses.The zoo sent payments to accounts he controlled or to other third parties, who sent the bulk of the payments to Anderson, prosecutors said.Anderson worked at the zoo for more than 17 years and served as the director of behavioral biology for the zoo's Institute for Conservation Research.
