GAITHERSBURG, Md. -- Under the fluorescent lights, inside a series of labs, researchers believe they may have cracked the code to create a vaccine for the new coronavirus, which has officially named COVID-19.“It’s rapidly evolving,” said Dr. Gregory Glenn, president of research and development at the Maryland-based company Novavax. “As a company, we are very invested in looking at how to protect people against infectious diseases.”Novavax is one of several pharmaceutical companies around the world, racing to develop a vaccine for the strain of the coronavirus, which recently emerged in Wuhan, China.“We have to puzzle-solve with vaccines,” Dr. Glenn said. “We think about: what do we want to have the immune response to target? Because that should block the infection and stop the illness and that’s the goal here.”He showed a three-dimensional computerized depiction of what the virus looks like.“The coronavirus – corona being ‘crown’ – has spikes,” he said. “Those spikes have a very important function. They let the virus bind to the human cell and then those spikes act as a syringe to inject genetic material into the human cell.”A vaccine would potentially stop that process, thereby protecting a person from the coronavirus.“We have the gene, we have the vaccine, we’re going to move it into animal testing shortly,” Dr. Glenn said. “Our goal is in late spring to be testing in humans.”It normally takes about 18 months to get human trials started on a vaccine. This shorter time frame is nothing new for the company; they developed an Ebola vaccine within 90 days ready for testing – but there’s a catch.It can take years for a vaccine to get approved, but under dire circumstances sometimes they can be used through something called “expanded access” or “compassionate use” – meaning, the vaccine can be used in humans, before it’s fully licensed.“That happened with Ebola – they didn’t have a licensed vaccine, but they were able to use it under ‘compassionate use,’ they developed evidence that it was working,” Dr. Glenn said.As for a fully approved coronavirus vaccine, experts say that would take longer.“A vaccine in a year would be record-setting time, but not in time to probably have much impact for this disease outbreak,” said Dr. Eric Toner with the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security.However, if the coronavirus sticks around or comes back stronger in a second wave of the disease, Dr. Glenn said they want to be ready.“We know time is of the essence here,” he said.So far, approximately 73,000 people have been infected and more than 1,800 people have died from the most recent strain of the coronavirus. 2653

From the outside, the chaos and screaming from the kids room at this YMCA in Burlington Kentucky, seems pretty normal.But in the world of COVID-19, it’s anything but.“The world has really changed and is changing by the minute,” said Jorge Gomes, director of Greater Cincinnati YMCA.The Greater Cincinnati YMCA took the call to action and is closing down other operations to focus on childcare for parents who can’t work from home, especially those on the front lines fighting this pandemic.“We have opened childcare centers specifically to help and support those individuals that are hospital staff and first responders," said Gomes. "Our intent is to give these kids a safe fun environment while they’re families are saving the world."Childcare is going is a big deal while the country weathers the storm. Normally, during working hours, parents rely on the school system for that, among many other things.No one knows that better than Kathy Burkhardt.“Our schools don’t close," she said. "We’re open until 6 in the evening; sometimes beyond that. We provide summer feeding, summer care, after school care."Burkhardt runs the Erlanger-Elsmere School District (EESD). She and her staff aren’t changing anything while school is out. The school will continue to feed children. “Three of our schools are open right now for breakfast and lunch,” said Amanda Ponchot, nutrition director for EESD.Additionally, the school district is checking on students struggling with their mental health issues.“Our counselors are still checking in with our high-need kids, everyday,” said Amber Evans, youth services coordinator for the district.And making sure kids have a place to stay.“We typically serve about 300 students [experiencing] homelessness,” said Shelly Warner, the Families in Transitions Coordinator at EESD.These are just many of the things that our education system is tasked with handling, coronavirus or not.“We see our role as making sure students are successful, and if all you’re doing is focusing on what’s happening from 8 to 3, then you’re not really doing all you can do for children and families,” said Burkhardt.All of the district's actions are helping in times like this, especially the meals for families who are preparing for the worst.“We're trying to ration our food, so we’ve created like a little sign out snack sheet, so they're allowed two snacks a day,” said Nina Vogt, a mom with three kids at home from school. But the spirit of the community is strong, and its members think by working together they can help keep families and kids safe and fed.“There is some simplicity with just simply walking away for a couple of weeks and some extreme complexities when you think about trying to launch a whole new idea, but this is what we do," said Gomes“Stay calm. HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. — A grandmother in Hillsborough County, Florida, is facing several charges after she caused a crash that killed her 10-month-old granddaughter, according to Florida Highway Patrol. According to an accident report, Helen Mention, 50, was drunk when she crashed into a guardrail on Friday, Oct. 25 at 9 a.m. Her blood alcohol level was .225, FHP says. That's nearly three times the legal limit of 0.08. Troopers say Mention was driving with 10-month-old Harlem Mention on her lap. She was turning from Mango Road onto westbound I-4 when she crashed into a guardrail. Harlem was taken to Tampa General with critical injuries. She died a few days later on Oct. 28, according to FHP. Mention was arrested Monday and charged with DUI manslaughter, aggravated manslaughter of a child, careless driving and a violation of Florida's child restraint law. 883
