As the holiday shopping season kicks off this week, the Better Business Bureau is warning consumers about a new scam surrounding pricey gaming consoles.According to a news release, with the PlayStation 5 and other gaming devices in high demand, fake deals are appearing on the internet showing the systems at a reduced price.The scam reportedly works by showing a deal on a lesser-known website that has positive reviews, convincing customers to make a purchase via Paypal or another form of payment.According to the BBB, if you receive a package at all from the website or company, it won't be that coveted PS5 or Xbox Series X, but instead will be an item of little value."Since you technically received a shipment, you will be unable to contest the purchase with the third-party who processed the payment," the BBB said.One consumer who fell for a scam said they were unable to get in touch with the website they purchased their item from.“I attempted to reach out to the email address on their website, however I received an email informing me that it was not a valid email address. I then attempted to call the phone number listed on the website, [which gave me] an automatic message informing me that the number was not valid.”The BBB says to do these three things before buying a pricey console:Research the company you plan to purchase from thoroughly. It’s best to purchase items from sellers you already know and trust, but if you decide to purchase from an unfamiliar online store, do your homework first. Read as many customer reviews as you can find, look up the business on org, and do an online search with the company’s name followed by the word “scam” to see if you find any complaints. Make sure the company has legitimate customer service contact information (not just a form you have to fill out and hope for a response) and clear return and refund policies as well.Avoid impulse buying. Scammers like to draw people in with “flash sales” and “limited time offers” in hopes you will hand over your money on impulse. Resist the urge.Don’t believe prices that are too good to be true. Before you start shopping, find out the price of the gaming console at a major retailer. You can check prices online to get a general idea of what the console is selling for. Keep that price in mind as you shop and be wary of sellers who offer the product at a steeply discounted price. As students begin to head back to the classroom – either virtually or in person – this month begins the most uncertain school year in recent memory.While some public health experts have expressed apprehension about reopening schools, President Donald Trump gave a full-throated defense for bringing back students into classroom full time this fall. Trump hosted a group of educators and school administrators at the White House on Wednesday.Amid Trump’s effort to reopen schools, the CDC released updated guidance last month that emphasizes reopening schools. The new guidance contradicts previous guidance, which recommended closing schools during periods of substantial community transmission.The updated guidance said that extended school closures are harmful to children and can lead to severe learning loss, and the need for in-person instruction is particularly important for students with heightened behavioral needs.During an event with educators on Wednesday, Trump said not only should students return to the classroom, but he decried hybrid schedules, which incorporates a blend of in-person and virtual learning. Proponents of hybrid schedules say that they allow for students to have some in-person learning while opening more classroom space for social distancing.But the president is not a fan.“The concept of every other day seems a little ridiculous, right?” Trump said. “If you are going to do it, you do it. If you are not going to do it, the concept of going back even from a management standpoint from the school, every other day seems very strange.”Trump once again called on Congress to pass 5 billion in education funding, which House Democrats have also pushed for as part of a broader stimulus plan. While Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said the White House is open to doing a piecemeal approach to a stimulus package, House Democrats have pushed for an all-encompassing bill.Some of the funding for schools could be used to help districts with additional costs associated with mitigating the risk of the virus.Trump said that the funds should follow the students. He has previously said that if schools opt for online learning, they should not receive federal funds.“If the school is closed, you know, why are we paying if a school is closed?” Trump asked. “Why are we paying the school if it is closed? I would rather give it to the student, the parents, and you do your own thing, and to me it makes a lot of sense.”While Trump is eager for a full return to school, there are several cautionary anecdotes from several districts that opened earlier this month.Most notably, the Cherokee School District in Georgia reported on Tuesday 59 students and employees tested positive for the coronavirus following its reopening. At a time when people across the country are calling to defund the police, or outright abolish them, convincing others to make a career in law enforcement could be a tough sell.For Cameron Mosher, however, the decision to put on the badge for a living is an easy one.“For me, it’s always been an urge to serve my community,” he said.Mosher is training to be a deputy sheriff at the Orange County Sheriff’s Regional Training Academy in Southern California.“I want to try to be that positive change in law enforcement to try to help and move forward with this career,” he said.Moving forward and maintaining order as the country deals with a pandemic and social unrest.“I have a brother in St. Louis, Missouri, not too far from Ferguson, and we’ve had some interesting debates over the last five or so years,” said Lt. Joses Walehwa, who is helping train a new group of recruits at the Orange County Sheriff’s Regional Training Academy.Walehwa says his team is preparing the next generation of law enforcement officer for much more than traffic stops and arrests.“As an African American, or really any minority group here in America, has a unique perspective when it comes to just their lived experience growing up,” he said. “I think for me, the biggest impact is bridging the gap. You know, bridging this issue of us versus them.”Walehwa says another huge impact when it comes to recruiting is the economy.“When the economy starts to dip, you see that people start to look for stable jobs,” he said. “Law enforcement and public sector and jobs like ours become a little bit more appealing because people see the stability of the job.”A job where despite a pension and a mean annual wage of more ,600 (Bureau of Labor Statistics), there’s still a major need for more sheriff’s deputies across the country.A recent report from the Police Executive Research Forum shows 36% of respondents said the number of applicants at their agency has “decreased significantly.”For recruits like Mosher, however, working in law enforcement means much more than money. It’s about building trust in his community while also addressing new challenges and raising the standards of law enforcement officers.“We see definitely a lot of people who are not necessarily supportive of law enforcement right now,” he said. “But in the end, that’s totally OK, because we’re here to support everyone. At least two protesters were struck by a vehicle toward the end of a protest in Bloomington.Protesters had gathered to demand arrests following a weekend incident at Lake Monroe where several people pinned a man in an apparent attempted lynching.The incident happened around 9 p.m in Bloomington near the Monroe County Courthouse as the protest was wrapping up.Hundreds of people had been taking part in a rally and protest march through Bloomington following an alleged racist attack at Lake Monroe where several men attacked and apparently attempted to lynch Vauhxx Booker, a Monroe County Human Rights commissioner. 626
