INDIANAPOLIS — It has been quite a journey for Kari Wegg.She had been working tirelessly as a NICU nurse at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis for more than 25 years when she found herself fighting for her own life with COVID-19 in that very same hospital.“It’s devastating. I never thought something like this could happen to me,” Wegg said. “It’s been so hard because I was healthy, and I thought if I ever got it, I would be fine.”Wegg first got sick in June and diagnosed with pneumonia. Then in July, she, her husband and two children tested positive for the coronavirus.“I do work in a hospital,” she said. “My husband also works in a hospital. It’s very possible we got it from the hospital.”Her family had mild symptoms and recovered quickly. However, Wegg did not.“It’s been since July since I’ve seen my boys., and I haven’t been able to hug them or love on them, and they miss me so much,” Wegg said.Wegg was put on a heart and lung bypass machine on Aug. 19. She says her doctors discussed removing care.“Their dad had to sit down and tell them their mother might die, and they’ve had to try and cope with that,” she said.But Wegg says her husband wouldn’t give up. Calls were made, and she was transferred to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago on Sept. 5 for a double lung transplant.Northwestern was the first hospital in the country to perform a double lung transplant on a COVID-19 paitnet, and Wegg was only the sixth such patient to undergo the surgery.“I am eternally grateful to the family of my donors,” Wegg said. “I don’t know anything about them or how they died but they gave me the gift of life.”Grateful to be alive, but devastated financially with non-stop medical bills, she suffers in her bed, while her fellow healthcare workers continue the fight. Wegg says she even has coworkers who have died of the virus.Wegg says she's praying that more people take the virus seriously."I’m hoping my message as a nurse who didn’t expect any of this can get out there and bring it home to people who don’t necessarily want to wear a mask or want to isolate themselves or quarantine," Wegg said. In Houston, Texas, everything is bigger, including the city’s problem with PPE litter.Many of the masks, gloves, and bottles of hand sanitizer being used to protect people during the pandemic aren’t being disposed of properly and some are worried it’s becoming a health hazard.Now, city leaders are taking matters into their own hands while trying to take PPE litter off the street“I know that they say everything is bigger in Texas but we definitely don’t want to be known for a big litter problem,” said Martha Castex-Tatum, Houston’s Vice Mayor Pro-Tem, who is helping launch the city’s new anti-PPE littering campaign.“It’s not only unsightly but it’s also a health issue,” she said. “If the PPE is contaminated, we don’t want other people touching it.”Castex-Tatum says stopping litter before it starts could save money in the long run.“It’s always expensive to pick up litter,” she said. “For instance, this PPE litter ends up in our drains. The city of Houston, we spend million a year cleaning out our drains.”Down the drains and into waterways, where the health impacts could be significant.“Unlike sewage systems, storm water is untreated and it flows directly into our lakes and our rivers and our oceans. There’s no intermediate treatment,” said Rachel Meidl, LP.D., CHMM, a fellow in energy and environment at Rice Univeristy. She says trash attracts trash and that PPE litter is a problem, not only in Houston but around the world.“As it concerns the pandemic, it’s how do we manage it,” Meidl asked.For some Houstonians, the answer to that question is simple.“It takes five seconds of your time to find a trash can,” one local man said about properly disposing PPE. “Just do it.”Just do it: another famous slogan from another famous campaign, something Castex-Tatum hopes Houston can replicate.“It’s important for people to know the message the message that we are trying to send with the anti-litter campaign,” she said.That message is clear: don’t let Houston go to waste.“I hope this inspires other cities across the country to also kick off anti-litter campaign,” Castex-Tatum said. 2113

Indonesian police have vowed to crackdown on the distribution of bootleg alcohol, as deaths this month connected to the consumption of illegally produced toxic liquor exceeded 86.The majority of the deaths were in the province of West Java, but have also been reported in the capital Jakarta, and South Kalimantan, said national police spokesman Inspector General Setyo Wasisto."They (bootleggers and their distributors) are part of a close knit community. Sometimes, when police come to check on a tip they have already put the bootleg alcohol away. They know who their customers are when they come. It's much like a clandestine narcotics network," Setyo said."In the past, bootleg alcohol was found to be a mixture of alcohol and energy drinks. Some are a mix of pure alcohol, carbonated drinks and an ingredient used in anti-mosquito repellent."Police have promised to stamp out the scourge before the Islamic holy month of Ramadan beginning mid-May, with a new task force being created to handle the assignment.Seven people have been arrested so far in connection with the deaths, four in Jakarta and three in West Java province, said Argo Yuwono, a spokesman for South Jakarta police.In response to the recent spate of poisonings, police have rounded-up sellers of bootleg alcohol in affected areas, and sent samples of seized liquor to the country's Drug and Food Control Agency for forensic evaluation, according to the state-run Antara news agency."We have taken the blood and urine samples along with that of the drink.
