SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — In the late '80s Gary Cheatham founded Auntie Helen's in a one-car garage in North Park in 1988.Gary did fluff-and-fold laundry first for one, then for a handful of friends who were sick with AIDS."Everybody could do it. But nobody would do it. And I think that makes him a superhero in my eyes," says Auntie Helen's current Executive Director, Rod Legg.Fear and stigma at the time hurt the LGBT community as much as the disease, but word spread quickly about Gary's services, and Auntie Helen's grew. Sadly, so did the disease.HIV and AIDS claimed more than 100,000 lives in the U.S. in the 1980s. Many of Gary's clients and friends who died willed their estates to Auntie Helen's.Their belongings accumulated in Gary's garage, which was also where he did laundry. Eventually, with help from a few high-powered friends and other activists, Gary opened Auntie Helen's thrift store in 1989.The laundry service and the thrift store are still located in North Park."We also do COVID-19 [laundry], which is our frontline medical workers. That's a tie in to the past, we had to do that. We had to offer that," Legg says.They're expanding the store, and their outreach, giving out free groceries to their regular clients (about 25-35 individuals) and now also to frontline workers.With COVID-19 leaving so many more people on hard times, they started delivering groceries — no questions asked, no referral needed. At one point, to more than 300 people.Legg explains, "this is everybody's HIV in a sense... We don't know where we're at. We're all wondering what's going to happen the next day, but most importantly is neighbor to neighbor we need to make sure we're taking care of each other."All in keeping with the legacy of Gary Cheatham, about whom, Legg says, "this man was way before his time... Can you imagine the faces of the people that got the hugs, and the clothes? We should all be our heroes, for each other." 1943

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - In preparation for one of the most advanced fighter jets in the world, Marine Corps Air Station Miramar is planning security upgrades to its airfield perimeter fence.10News discovered it’s one of nine large-scale construction projects that Miramar will be doing over the next decade."These construction projects here are what enables, that is what brings our national defense policy and strategy to reality," said Public Works Officer Lt. Commander Travis Brinkman.Currently being built in the heart of MCAS Miramar is a 160,000 square foot hangar is designed to hold up to 12 F-35s.It's the first of three hangars planned for the location."The need to provide modern facilities as well as the F-35 has specific requirements, specific systems that need different maintenance, different capabilities within the facility itself to provide that maintenance,” said Brinkman. According to a post on the Federal Business Opportunities website, MCAS Miramar is also looking to replace more than 24,000 feet of existing chain link fence, vehicle gates, and swing arm barriers.According to the site, “The project magnitude is ,000,000 to ,000,000.”"We're upgrading the fence line around the airfield itself, and it’s simply to ensure that our fence line is complying with the security requirements for the F-35,” said Brinkman. The Social Security Administration (SSA) reports that one in four of today's 20-year-olds will become disabled for 90 days or more before retirement age. Having a plan for the long term can relieve a lot of stress if the unexpected does happen.One option is disability insurance; there's short-term and long-term. Disability insurance pays a portion of your income if you are suddenly unable to work because of illness, injury, or accident.You can get coverage through an employer or buy it from an insurer. She's relied on Medicaid for medical care, which has helped with resources like a nurse care manager, but she says there are holes in the system."I'm still fighting to get a TBI specialist, I'm still trying to get a lot of the treatments and specialists and therapies that I believe could help me," said Blue. The San Diego County Health & Human Services Agency is ready to help San Diegans whose incomes have been impacted by an unexpected disability:CalFresh: Food assistance:Medi-Cal: Free or low-cost health coverage for children and adults with limited income and resources. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Mayor Kevin Faulconer detailed his plan to bolster San Diego's infrastructure in a proposed budget Tuesday.The plan calls for a total of about 3 million in investments into the city's streets, parks, and water system — among other improvements. The investment in infrastructure is the largest in San Diego's history, according to the mayor's office.The investments are part of the mayor's proposed .8 billion budget, which City Council leaders are set to adopt at a June 11 meeting.RELATED: San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer unveils 2019 budget"After decades of neglect, we have a lot more to do, which is why I’m focused on fixing more streets, building more parks and making more neighborhood upgrades than ever before," Faulconer said in a release. "We also need to invest in aging buildings like those in Balboa Park so they stand the test of time and that’s exactly what this budget will do."Here's a look at some of the financial commitments the mayor's plan proposes:Pure Water: Among the commitments is a 1 million investment into Pure Water San Diego to create an independent, drought-proof local water supply for San Diego. But according to Veterans United Home Loans, VA loans in California are surging, and they’re up 15 percent this year in San Diego.Navy veteran Robert Streets and his wife Corrie are part of that surge."There was a large cabinet that came out here, and we knocked that down," says Streets in his recently remodeled kitchen.The Streets are proud to show off their new home. "I own this, and I can do whatever I want. I don't have to ask somebody if I can put a hole in the wall or hang a picture."While Millennials are struggling to buy in San Diego, Millennial Veterans are surging in home purchases, up 61 percent according to Veterans United with an average purchase price of almost 0,000. And for the Streets, it was made possible using a VA Loan.
