BLOOMINGTON, Indiana — A man said he was almost lynched over the July 4 weekend at Lake Monroe in Bloomington. He said a group of people physically assaulted him and threatened him using racially-charged language.The mayor of Bloomington has condemned what he saw in a series of videos that has now gone viral, being shared thousands of times. The video shows several men holding a black man against a tree, with his arms behind his back, allegedly threatening to lynch him.'Let him go, dude, please let him go. Please let him go.'"To be pinned down at the tree and hear him yell at his friend, 'Get a noose,' not even a rope, to get a noose with so much intent and the connotation that that carries in our society, I knew my life was in danger," Vauhxx Booker said.In disbelief is how Booker said he felt when men were seen holding him against his will — shouting 'white power' and other racial slurs."There was a moment where a white woman that was standing by yelled out not to kill me and as I was underneath these men struggling to breathe. I realized that she was talking about me, not to kill me," Booker said.Booker said he and some friends went to watch the lunar eclipse on the 4th of July at Lake Monroe. A group of men informed them the route they were taking to get to the public access beach was on private property but then things got hostile, leaving Booker with a minor concussion, abrasions and patches of hair ripped out."What went through my mind was I could be the next person like that or I could be the next hashtag," Booker said.What saved his life, Booker said, was his friends along with bystanders that heard the commotion and demanded the attackers let him go, refusing to leave."They stayed. It made a difference," Booker said. "I wasn't going to be a Black person that died and heard my own death narrated in front of me.""Horrified," Shelli Yoder, Democratic candidate for Indiana Senate District 40, said. "I am horrified, not surprised, but disgusted.""My heart is breaking for our town," Nicole Bolden, Bloomington city clerk, said. "This is Bloomington. And I know people love to say this doesn't happen in Bloomington. It does. A lot."Booker called the police and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources came but no arrests were made at the scene."It is not ironic that this would happen the weekend of Independence Day," Yoder said. On one of the islands of the Florida Keys, there’s a small animal that’s causing a big stir. “You know, I love the Key Deer, they’re just, they’re warm and fuzzy,” said Cathy Rhoades, who runs the Florida Keys Wildlife Society. “We do consider them a national treasure,” said Kristie Killam with US Fish and Wildlife. The Key Deer. It’s a little known species of deer that’s native to the island chain. The animal is very small compared to its cousins on the mainland. “The small ones, can get pretty – 2 to 4 pounds at birth," explained Killam. "Some of the tinier ones that look almost like a house cat. Some of the itty bitty fawns." For more than 50 years, the baby Bambi has been a member of the endangered species act. The population declined in the 40s and 50s by hunting. “To the point there was only about 25 to 50 Key Deer left in the wild were the estimates,” said Killam. But they could be removed from the endangered species list. They are recommended on the 3-year work plan for US Fish and Wildlife for de-listing due to recovery. They’re just one of 55 species included in the report. But the tiny animal is incredibly important to Vivian Beck. "They’re just so unique that they literally live among us, or I should say we live among them, and they’re adapting,” said Beck. She’s the president of the Key Deer Protection Alliance, an organization dedicated to keeping the Key Deer protected. Beck thinks removing the animal from the list is premature. US Fish and Wildlife estimates there are between 600 and 800 deer on the island. She says she’s been told as many as 1,000 deer. “Texas A&M said there were 573, so our numbers didn’t match up at all,” said Beck. While the Department of Fish and Wildlife did give us an interview to discuss the deer’s history and biology, they said they can’t comment on an ongoing species assessment. For those that live in the Florida Keys, they just want the assessment to reflect the truth. “That’s the process I would like to see happen, just get more information, more information and refine your thinking based on the information that you have,” said Rhoades.“The Key Deer are one storm and one disease away from total extinction,” said Beck.  2230

TAMPA, Fla. — Three generations of one Tampa Bay family say they wound up in oncoming traffic after a blowout involving a newer tire.Steve Nelson says he purchased four new tires last November, but they had just 300 miles on them when he hit the road with his son and grandson in June. The trio left Tampa for a cross country camping trip to Yosemite in California — an adventure that took a scary turn on the drive back home.Steve said he lost control of the truck after the front driver's side tire blew out on I-40 near Gallup New Mexico. “We wound up in the oncoming lane dodging semi-trucks,” he said. Steve a retired insurance manager showed us the invoice for over 0 that he paid to replace the two front tires in New Mexico. The paperwork indicates the tires he bought new last November had about 4,200 miles on them. Normally tires don't need replacing before 30,000 miles or more.During the trip home, Steve stopped at a tire shop in Irvin, Texas and asked that they check the back tires. That Dodge dealer replaced the rear tires and wrote on the invoice that those tires had broken cords. Steve made a call for action after he says Mavis, the shop where he bought the tires, denied his claim for a refund. ABC Action News asked Chris Brazzeal, the owner of Brazzeal Tire in Tampa, to examine the original tires that came off the pickup. Chris showed us bubbling and rubber separation on two of the tires. “That is a clear indication the tire is now coming apart,” said Brazzeal. We contacted both Mavis and the tire manufacturer Vee Rubber. “Mavis is committed to providing safe and high-quality services to our customers. We have been in contact with the customer regarding this issue and have reached out to the tire manufacturer on his behalf to facilitate a resolution,” the company wrote.After we got involved a representative from Vee Rubber flew to Tampa, examined the tires and admitted one of them was defective. From California to South Carolina, a former Marine is riding is motorcycle across the country to raise money for Save the Brave.Major Scott Huesing is riding to honor his friend Dave White, a former Navy Veteran, who recently passed away from alcohol poisoning.When asked to give the eulogy at his friends funeral, Huesing want to do something more along the way. He's riding 4,600 miles round trip to raise money for Save the Brave, a nonprofit that's combating suicide and Post traumatic stress disorder among veterans and first responders."This pandemic has created a lot of fear for people and it’s isolated people," Huesing said. For veterans and people dealing with post traumatic stress, isolation is probably the worse thing for them. I think it’s probably the jump off point to where they reach hopelessness."According to a United States Department of Veterans Affairs Report, suicides are on the rise. In 2017, more than 45,000 Americans died from suicide and 6,130 of them were U.S. Veterans."I think right now people want to feel united around something and to be able to hop on my Harley and drive 4,600 miles round trip, I think that gives people a reason to come out and support," Huesing said.One of his first stops was in Tucson, but he's been riding ever since.
