RAMONA (KGTV)— Representative Duncan Hunter -R (CA-50) kicked off his Memorial Day weekend in Ramona, at a town hall-style meeting. He and his father, former Congressman Duncan Hunter Sr. - R were guest speakers at "The Border: Then and Now!" event, hosted by a conservative group, American Liberty Forum- Ramona. The elder Hunter remembered San Ysidro during his early years in Congress in the 1980s and 1990s. "The border was a no-man's land. And everybody knows that here, that you didn't go to the border when it was close to being dark," Hunter Sr. said. Border Patrol statistics showed in 1986, San Diego agents apprehended nearly 630,000 people attempting to cross the border illegally. But double-layer fencing dropped that number to close to 32,000 arrests in 2016. They also argued that crime numbers dipped, and the economy boomed in that time. Because of these, both Hunters said they support the President's Border Wall plan. "If you can move troops to Syria, then you can move troops to the border, and build a wall on the border, and say it is in the interest of national security," the current Congressman said. But Friday, a federal judge temporarily blocked the President's plan to transfer military funds to build more border fencing. This was something that the Congressman did not agree with. "His lawyers need to fight it. They need to do it now, and it should go up to the Supreme Court," Hunter said. Hunter also told the audience at Ramona MainStage that he is on board with the President's new merit-based immigration policy. "You get to come here, if you're worth having here," Hunter Jr. said. "I know that sounds mean, but just because you want to come here from another country, doesn't mean you get to."When asked about agricultural and construction jobs, Hunter Jr. admitted that they need to work on special provisions."We understand the needs especially in California and other agricultural states, where they need people to work here, and most Americans don't want those jobs, and they're not going to to do those jobs," Hunter said. "So how do you do that? how do you do it so that the people who are coming here can't be taken advantage of, so they have to go home and check in?" he asked. 2235

President-elect Joe Biden became emotional this week, talking to firefighters, nurses, and other frontline workers in the coronavirus pandemic.“The physical impacts of this virus are devastating. I myself have held the hand of dying patients who were crying out for their families that they can’t see. I’ve taken care of coworkers as they fight for their lives on a ventilator, and knowing they got sick because their hospital or their government hasn’t protected them,” said Mary Turner, an intensive care unit nurse in Minnesota while holding back tears.“I’m sorry I’m so emotional,” she added through tears. “You’ve got me emotional,” Biden responds, while wiping away his own tears. The online roundtable Wednesday came the same day America had a record number of deaths in one day, more than 1,800, and recorded more than 250,000 deaths total since the beginning of the pandemic.“It’s not enough to praise you. We have to protect you, we have to pay you,” Biden told the group of frontline workers.Biden participated in the roundtable from Wilmington, Delaware, where he has a home and has been hunkered down since Election Day.The roundtable is one of several the president-elect has held in the last week, bringing together business leaders, community members, frontline workers, and experts to begin collaborating on possible strategies to control the spread of the coronavirus and rebuild the economy.Biden has convened a coronavirus advisory board to begin working on solutions and strategies for when Biden and vice president-elect Kamala Harris are sworn into office in January. He has encouraged a nationwide effort to require masks and social distancing. However, state governors would have to make those decisions. 1735

Ray Chavez, the nation's oldest survivor of the attack on Pearl Harbor, has died, the White House says. He was 106.The veteran passed away peacefully in his sleep Wednesday, CNN affiliate KFMB reported, citing a family statement.Chavez was a quartermaster stationed in Pearl Harbor at the time of the Japanese attack on Hawaii that launched America's entry into World War II in 1941.He lived in Poway, California, with his family but gained prominence in recent years as he traveled around the country, attending memorial services and commemorations. Earlier this year, he met with President Donald Trump in the Oval Office ahead of Memorial Day."Ray was honored to have served his country and to fight among heroes and loved meeting his fellow comrades," his family said in a statement. "He cherished his time going to talk to the kids at schools because he doesn't want them to forget Pearl Harbor."As his health declined in recent months, he wished to be buried at the Miramar National Cemetery, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported. 1044

President-elect Joe Biden’s favorability rating has risen six percentage points since the election while President Donald Trump’s has slipped three points, according to a recent survey from Gallup. The survey talked to Americans between November 5-19, during a time when the Trump campaign’s legal team was filing lawsuits and challenging the general election results in several states. The results were published after Thanksgiving. The survey asks people if they have a favorable opinion of the person.Biden’s favorability is at 55%, the highest it’s been in the Gallup survey since February 2019 right before he declared his presidential campaign. Trump’s favorability is at 42%, down from 45% right before the November election. The highest favorability rating President Trump has received during his presidency was 49% in April as the country was in the initial stages of the coronavirus pandemic. The post-election results appear to be most impacted by changes in responses from people who identify as Republican. Biden’s favorability among this group grew from 6% to 12% since the election, while Trump’s rating among this group dropped from 95% to 89%.Gallup says Biden’s bump in favorability is in line with trends they have seen after presidential elections since 2000.Meanwhile, ratings for losing presidential candidates in Gallup’s poll have been mixed over the years; John McCain and Mitt Romney saw a higher rating post-election, and Hillary Clinton’s rating was unchanged after the 2016 election. 1517
