(KGTV) - Income taxes on military pension is pushing a lot of people out of California. A new study proves that taking those taxes away would actually help both veterans and the state. For the people who served their country, it's tough to make it in California. "My wife just retired," said Matthew Schillingburg. "I just retired and so we're all on disposable income right now."He served in the army for more than 20 years. When his income is taxed by the state it can be hard to get by. "The thing that’s really holding us here, this community right here in San Diego that we grew up and love so much, our kids and our grandkids here," Schillingburg added.He joins 1.8 million military veterans who live in California. Many of them are looking to leave the state for more affordable areas where their pension won't take a hit. Assembly Bill 2394 is trying to change that. "If we can eliminate that, that helps us have more disposable income and we can consume more in the community that we love so much," said Schillingburg.According to a new study, if veterans were exempt from state taxes there would be big changes by the year 2025. More than 12,000 jobs would be added to the economy, along with 0 million in total personal income, million in state and local taxes and billion in total business sales. The bill is currently in committee. (KGTV) - A high demand for power coupled with high temperatures led the California Independent System Operator Corporation (ISO) to issue a statewide Flex Alert Tuesday. A Flex Alert is issued when the electricity grid is “under stress” because of persistent hot temperatures, or generation or transmission outages, according to the ISO.Although San Diego remained relatively cool, with a high temperature in the 70s, other cities in California were put under heat advisories. Sacramento temperatures topped 100 degrees, while San Francisco reached the 90s. RELATED: 10News Pinpoint Weather ForecastCalifornians were asked to conserve power from 4 p.m. through 10 p.m. “Consumers can help avoid power interruptions by turning off all unnecessary lights, using major appliances before 4 p.m. and after 10 p.m., and setting air conditioners to 78 degrees or higher,” ISO officials posted online. San Diego Gas and Electric told 10News it reached out to 160 medium-to-large customers, mainly businesses, and asked them to conserve power between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m.The ISO reported energy use would reach a peak of 42,800 megawatts Tuesday evening. (KGTV) - Authorities in Northern California have issued an arrest warrant for a former Southwestern College football player after he failed to appear in court in a sexual assault case.The Humboldt County Sheriff's Office said 25-year-old Raul Sierra failed to show up for two hearings, including one on March 7.The former Southwestern College and Humboldt State University student-athlete was arrested in 2016 for a sexual assault that officials say occurred in a campus residence hall at HSU in 2015.Sierra was charged originally with acquaintance rape “by use of drugs” in 2016 after taking a plea bargain. However, subsequent court records show that Sierra pleaded no contest to lesser charges of felony false imprisonment and misdemeanor assault in 2016.Court records show that Sierra is supposed to serve community service and undergo counseling through a court program.Sierra attended Castle Park High school before playing at Southwestern College and walking-on at Humboldt State University. 1031
