SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Rent isn't the only thing in San Diego on the rise - so are the costs and fees associated with it. A recent study from HotPads, a Zillow-owned site, says San Diegans can pay ,270 per year in overlooked costs and fees that come with moving. The includes security and pet deposits, pet rent and parking. The biggest chunk comes from the security deposit, which is typically one month's rent. In all, it works out to an additional 6 per month. "As rent prices continue to rise and rent affordability remains a concern, it is important for renters to consider all their potential expenses before planning a move," said Joshua Clark, economist at HotPads. "There's all kinds of things they might charge you for at move-in, so you want to be sure to check before you sign anything," she said. Steingrebe focuses largely on downtown, renting out privately owned condos. She says some buildings even require tenants hire move-in coordinators to make sure things go smoothly and not disturb other residents. Renters don't pay the HOA directly, but landlord's can pass along any sort of fines or violations they commit. "Unauthorized moves, these buildings downtown, you can't just walk in with your couch, you have to schedule it," Steingrebe said, adding dumping trash inappropriately can also lead to fines. The biggest financial issues that arise for renters come at the end of a lease, when it comes to getting a security deposit refunded, Steingrebe said. She said the best defense is to document with photos and text any damage or issues that occur throughout the year, starting with an initial move-in inspection. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Humane Society has placed 140 rats up for adoption after they were given up by a woman in Del Mar this week.The rats have undergone veterinary exams and tests and are "happy and ready" for adoption, the Humane Society says. Because rats are social animals, the society is only adopting them out in same-gender pairs unless the owner already has a rat.The rodents were given to SDHS after a woman's pet rats multiplied out of control while she was living out of her vehicle in Del Mar. The population eventually grew to more than 300 pet rats. The rats chewed through the vehicle's wiring, rendering it inoperable.RELATED: Del Mar neighbors aid woman living in car with 300 pet ratsNeighbors have since rallied around the woman, helping her tow her old vehicle, get a new car, and turn over the rats to SDHS. Many of the rats were pregnant females and are currently in foster care through the Humane Society. The 140 rats available now are males and non-pregnant females, according to SDHS."Although rats are not as common as other small rodents, they make great pets," SDHS said. "They are very social, smart and love to interact with humans ... SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego City Council President Georgette Gomez has floated the idea of turning the second floor of Golden Hall into a permanent homeless shelter.Gomez made her comments Tuesday as the City Council unanimously approved a plan to use the second floor as a temporary shelter for three months while a Father Joe's bridge shelter is relocated. The current shelter for women and families at 14th and Commercial will close April 1. The city plans to build a new tent shelter to open on a lot at 17th and Imperial by June 30. Construction will cost million and the city will lease the land for ,000 a month. "So why spend million to put something back when we can actually spend million in maybe long-term leases to try to find a permanent solution," Gomez said. The Golden Hall concourse is about 1.5 miles away, and steps from City Hall. The bottom floor is still used for various events, including naturalization ceremonies and performances. Greg Block, a spokesman for the mayor, said long-term at Golden Hall wouldn't work for Father Joe's."For their clients, they need to be close to their main campus," he said. "Going back and forth via shuttle and all kinds of things isn't a workable solution for these folks that are there longer term."Bill Bolstad, chief revenue officer for Father Joe's, said the 17th and Imperial location would help residents get health and child care and employment services. "All kinds of things that are infinitely easier to provide when it's right next door, that's why we're very excited about the location down there," he said.
