(KGTV) — Newly released video shows the moment a Portland high school coach disarmed a student who brought a loaded shotgun to school in May.Keanon Lowe, Parkrose High School's head football and track coach, was in a classroom full of students when the gunman, identified as Angel Granados Dias, came in with shotgun on May 17, 2019, according to Portland police.In the video, Lowe brings Dias into a school hallway after appearing to disarm the student. Lowe is seen holding the shotgun before handing it off to another staff member. The coach continues to hold the student and embrace him in a hug, as the staff member leaves with the firearm and students flee from the classroom.Lowe, a former Oregon Ducks football player and NFL coach, says he lunged for the gun with both hands inside the classroom when he realized what was happening.The coach said he told Dias he was there for him and that his life was worth saving. Investigators say Dias was suffering a mental health crisis and only intended to hurt himself, Portland ABC-affiliate KATU reported."Then it was just me and that student. It was a real emotional time. It was emotional for him, it was emotional for me," Lowe told KATU in May. "In that time, I felt compassion for him. A lot of times, especially when you’re young, you don’t realize what you’re doing until it’s over."Dias has since been sentenced to three years probation and to undergo mental health treatment. (KGTV) -- More than 2,000 marijuana plants with an estimated street value of a million dollars or more were lifted by helicopter out of Rancho Penasquitos Wednesday.Drug Enforcement Administration officials tell ABC 10News, the illegal grow was found near a popular trail in the Del Mar Mesa Preserve Tuesday."In a city area to have an outdoor grow of his magnitude is extremely uncommon; we see these frequently in the backcountry," Sgt. Mark Knierim, Group Supervisor of the DEA Narcotics Task Force Marijuana Eradication Team.During the plant removal process, Knierim said a second grow location was discovered."We found a secondary area, another 50 plants were growing there, and then we found a processing area," said Knierim.He said approximately 300 to 500 pounds of processed marijuana ready for distribution were also discovered."Based on what we've seen historically, I would say this is most likely related to a cartel," he said.While recreational marijuana use is legal in California, the high taxes, permits, and fees for legal dispensaries may sway some people to break the rules. Knierim says a cannabis black market is now thriving in San Diego County."A black market has been created because of that, because people can do this at a fraction of the cost of having to have a licensed marijuana grow and make just as much money, if not more than what they're making at the licensed dispensaries," he explained.This year, Knierim said the DEA has discovered ten illegal outdoor grows and more than 50 illegal indoor operations."We've seen a tremendous upswing in people obtaining a piece of property, typically in our backcountry area of San Diego County, setting up greenhouses and setting up illegally without having permits," he said.While charges related to marijuana are typically misdemeanors in California, the extreme environmental issues with grows like the one discovered can lead to serious consequences."You have a lot of environmental issues, and all of those will be felonies," he said.Garbage, an encampment, and propane tanks were discovered at the grow in Rancho Penasquitos, but Knierim said other issues typically include native plants and trees being removed and illegal fertilizers and pesticides being used."The other issue is pesticides, they'll put pesticides out there that kill any of the animals that come in the area because the animals will eat their plants," he said.The DEA has not yet located anyone responsible for or linked to the illegal operation. 2505

(KGTV) -- Tuesday, SpaceX launchged several satellites into orbit that will replace a satellite network and monitor climate change. The Iridium-6/GRACE-FO satellites were launched just before 1 p.m. from Vandenberg Air Force Base. For this particular mission, SpaceX launched five Iridium NEXT satellites as part of the company's campaign to replace the world's largest commercial satellite network. A total of eight Iridium NEXT launches are planned with the company that will send into orbit 75 new satellites. Also on board the Falcon 9 rocket will be satellites that will monitor the movement of earth's mass for NASA and the German Research Centre for Geosciences.Watch the launch in the player below:  775

(KGTV) - Naval Criminal Investigative Services announced Friday the arrests of two additional Marines and a sailor, bringing the total of troops suspected of human smuggling and drug-related offenses to 19. Sixteen of the service members were taken into custody Thursday at Camp Pendleton during Battalion formation, a gathering of some 800 troops, U.S. Marine Corps officials said. An additional eight troops were questioned about drug offenses unrelated to the arrests, said Maj. Kendra Motz, 1st Marine Division Communication Strategy Operations Director. Two of the detainees were later arrested, said officials.“The Commanding Officer of 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment will act within his authority to hold the Marines accountable at the appropriate level, should they be charged,” said Motz.
