Congressional leaders will hold their weekly press conferences on Thursday, their first since it was formally projected that Democrats would hold on to control of the chamber for another two years.Democratic leadership in Congress slammed President Donald Trump's refusal to concede the election to President-elect Joe Biden in a press conference on Capitol Hill Thursday. In comments to reporters, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi highlighted that Trump's election fight comes as the U.S. is facing an unprecedented surge in the COVID-19 pandemic.Watch Rep. Kevin McCarthy's press conference in the video below."The President and the Republicans in Congress have ignored by delay, distortion, denial. Deaths have been caused. And what are they doing now? Continuing to ignore in spite of these numbers of (COVID-19 cases)," she said.Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer claimed Republicans were "poisoning the well" by supporting Trump's challenge to the election on unproven claims of widespread voter fraud.Despite nearly all media outlets calling the 2020 election for President-elect Joe Biden, President Donald Trump has said he plans to challenge the results of the election on unsubstantiated claims of fraud. Despite the President's claim, no state has yet reported widespread issues in ballot tallying that would indicate the results of the election are in doubt. While House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy mostly avoided addressing Trump's specific claims of voter fraud, he said he supports the administration's right to legally challenge the results. He added that all Americans regardless of whom they support should welcome the Trump campaign's challenges, claiming it made the process more transparent and restored faith in the electoral system.McCarthy did not directly respond when asked if he believed Trump's lawsuits would alter the outcome of the election. On Wednesday, The Associated Press formally projected that Democrats had picked up the required 220 seats in order to retain control of the House of Representatives through 2022.Pelosi's comments come as Politico reports that she and other current House leaders are on track to continue serving in their roles when the next Congress is sworn in next year.Pelosi, who is in her second stint as House Speaker (she also served in the same role from 2007 to 2011) has faced criticism from progressive members of the party who claim her moderate politics caused the Democrats to lose seats in the 2020 election.Watch Pelosi's press conference in the video below. 2535

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Data released Monday show governors who led state responses to the coronavirus pandemic were among beneficiaries of the loan program created to help small businesses weather COVID-19's economic effects. The governors of at least seven states had ties to companies that received loans through the Small Business Administration's Paycheck Protection Program. 387

CORONADO, Calif. (KGTV) -- Lifeguards in Coronado are on alert after spotting at least two juvenile white sharks Wednesday and Thursday. According to lifeguards, the sharks were at least a quarter to half a mile off the coast and didn’t appear to be engaging swimmers or showing signs of aggression. “Under existing protocol, the City was not required to close the beach or publicly report the sightings,” said City Manager Blair King. RELATED: 10 to 15 people stung by stingrays in Coronado“However, the City feels it’s important for the community to know that it takes these types of sightings seriously and is carefully monitoring the waters off Coronado. We also are working with Chris Lowe at the Shark Lab to find out more about the separate sightings and what might be going on.”Around 4 p.m. Thursday, a San Diego Fire-Rescue helicopter was called in and confirmed at least two four to five foot-long white sharks off the coast. The city says a lifeguard followed the sharks as they made their way to Point Loma. The city plans to try to tag or take DNA from the sharks over the weekend. According to city officials, it’s not uncommon to see juvenile white sharks offshore. “The shark population is rising and sightings are becoming more commonplace,” the city said in a news release. 1301

CINCINNATI — When Chad Mayer was born in 1980, a nurse told his parents it would be best for everyone if they didn't take him home from the hospital. A child with Down syndrome, she said, would be better off in a long-term care facility than a family home -- and his parents would be better off pretending he had died.Sue said she wouldn't hear it."Nobody's taking my child," she told the nurse. "We're taking him home."According to a series of studies conducted between 1995 and 2011, other American women often have different feelings about learning that they are likely to give birth to a child with Down syndrome. Around 67 percent of the surveyed women who received a positive prenatal Down screening chose to end their pregnancies. In Iceland, where prenatal screening is common and abortion is readily accessible, nearly 100 percent of women who receive the same positive test terminate their pregnancies.Should they be allowed to do so?A bill passed Wednesday by the Ohio House would make such abortions illegal and charge doctors who performed them with a fourth-degree felony. If convicted, they could face up to 18 months in prison and be fined ,000.According to proponents of the bill, choosing to end a pregnancy based on a Down syndrome diagnosis is a moral evil tantamount to eugenics.According to opponents such as Planned Parenthood of Ohio, legislation like this uses a moral crusade as a smokescreen to limit women's access to health care."This bill attempts to use the disability community as a political wedge to chip away women's access to abortion," the organization tweeted Wednesday. The intersection of disability advocacy -- the belief that every disabled person has the right to a healthy life free of social stigma -- and abortion advocacy -- the belief that every woman has the right to terminate an early-stage pregnancy she no longer wishes to carry to term -- is often messy.A central question: Is it any more ethical to compel a woman to give birth to a child whose care she might not be equipped to handle than it is to terminate a pregnancy based on a prenatal diagnosis? A New York Times article from 1991 articulated the tension felt by many disabled people and their families when the subject comes up: 2259
