SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A former Yuma Police officer charged with raping a woman in San Diego is coming face to face with his accuser’s mother. Jared Elkins didn’t flinch in court Tuesday as his wife’s cousin accused him of raping her over and over in her Kensington home. The woman says she didn’t yell because the former officer threatened to kill her. After the rape, the victim said in court that she ran into her mother’s room and escaped out a window. Her mother’s 911 call played in court Tuesday. Elkins’ wife was asleep across the hall. Police body cam footage showed the accuser hysterical in the back of the police car. The woman can be heard telling the officer how afraid she was. Elkins argued that the sex was consensual and the rape charges were made out of guilt. Elkins pleaded not guilty. His attorney said he used bad judgement but the sex was consensual and the two were drinking.He’s facing nine felony counts including forcible rape and could serve 14 years in prison if convicted. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Chula Vista World War II veteran celebrated the 100th birthday of a lifetime, with help from hundreds of strangers.The celebration was made possible through Arthur Brook, a 9-year-old dedicated to preserving the stories of WWII veterans. He's been interviewing veterans living at the Veterans Home of California, Chula Vista"Since they were at least in their 90's, to be registered in the military during WWII, they wouldn't be here for much longer," said Arthur.When Arthur learned Army veteran Edwin Schwimmer was turning 100 in September, he wanted to give him a special gift. "We quickly made a decision to make it the most special birthday in a long time!" the 9-year-old added.Arthur put out a call requesting birthday cards and received hundreds from around the country. "So many people thought to send him cards, I just wanted to thank them all, who sent cards to Edwin Schwimmer to thank him for his service to our country," said Arthur. Schwimmer was stunned at the number of people who took the time to write him a letter. "There's no words I can express how I feel," said Schwimmer, "I'm the luckiest guy in the world, the luckiest guy in the world."Arthur says he'll continue his mission to interview as many WWII veterans as possible. 1277

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A 16-year-old boy was hospitalized Sunday after being shot in Chollas View. According to police, the shooting happened around 3:30 a.m. at an apartment complex near the 47th Street Trolley Station. 10News spoke to the victim's mother. She said her eldest son, Ricardo Dominguez was shot in the right hip. The bullet went through the main artery but missed his organs. She said Ricardo is now sedated at the ICU -- in serious but stable condition.Witnesses told police two cars were seen speeding from the area, but no word on whether or not the vehicles were involved in the shooting.Ricardo Dominguez's mother has set up a fundraiser page. After battling cancer for four years, her family said she’s now in remission.The 10-year-old was invited to the Macy’s store to fill out a letter to Santa for the company’s annual Believe campaign. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A driver escaped serious injury after falling asleep behind the wheel and crashing his pickup truck on state Route 52 in the Kearny Mesa area.The crash happened at around 11:45 p.m. Thursday on the eastbound side of SR-52 near the transition to Interstate 805, the California Highway Patrol said.ABC 10News learned a man was driving his work truck when he fell asleep, leading his vehicle to roll over several times across freeway lanes before coming to rest on the right shoulder.The driver was able to crawl out of the wreckage and was evaluated for minor injuries by paramedics at the scene. He was not taken to the hospital.No other injuries or crashes related to the incident were reported. 723
