PHUKET, Thailand, July 22 (Xinhua) -- China and the United States need to maintain high-level contact and deepen cooperation in various areas of common concern, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said here Wednesday in his meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.     Yang said the two countries should also keep close communication and collaboration on global issues and properly handle disputes and sensitive issues in order to push forward bilateral ties. The ASEAN, or Association of Southeast Asia Nations, groups Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.     Clinton said that the U.S. hoped to closely cooperate with China in dealing with challenges and threats such as the global financial crisis and international terrorism to maintain world peace and security.     During the meeting, the two sides also mentioned the upcoming first U.S.-China strategic and economic dialogue.     The dialogue will be held in Washington, D.C. from July 27 to 28. Clinton and U.S. Treasure Secretary Timothy Geithner will be joined for the dialogue by their respective Chinese Co-Chairs, State Councilor Dai Bingguo and Vice Premier Wang Qishan.     The dialogue will focus on addressing the challenges and opportunities that both countries face on a wide range of bilateral, regional and global areas of immediate and long-term strategic and economic interests.     On Wednesday, Yang also met with his counterparts from Russia, South Korea and Pakistan. 

BEIJING, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Thursday personally conveyed National Day greetings to elderly scientists who have made prominent contributions to atomic and medical research.     China's National Day this year will commemorate the 60th anniversary of the founding of modern China. Premier Wen first visited Zhu Guangya, a nuclear physicist and one of the key scientists engaged in producing the first of China's atomic and hydrogen bombs between the 1950s and 1960s.     "You have devoted your whole life to the development of the country and service to the people. We will remember you with concern forever," Wen told 85-year-old Zhu. BEIJING, Sept. 15 (Xinhua) -- China's move to launch anti-dumping and anti-subsidy probes into imports of U.S. chicken products and vehicles was "based on the facts," Ministry of Commerce Spokesman Yao Jian said Tuesday. When asked if China's investigation was a retaliatory move because of the dispute over tire tariffs imposed earlier by the United States, Yao said at a press conference the investigation was in accordance with the country's anti-dumping and anti-subsidy regulations, and based on facts.     China Sunday launched anti-dumping and anti-subsidy investigations into chicken products and an anti-subsidy investigation into automobiles produced in the United States.     Yao said the probe followed Chinese manufacturers' and industrial associations' demands for an investigation into U.S. companies' dumping activities and government subsidies.     The ministry has received the requests and started evaluations, Yao said.     Ma Chuang, vice secretary general of China Animal Agriculture Association, said 17 member companies, along with other domestic companies, handed over the requests to the ministry.     The United States is the largest chicken products exporter to China. China imported 407,000 tonnes of chicken from overseas markets in the first half of 2009, with 359,000 tonnes, or about 90 percent from the United States.     The U.S. government last Friday imposed special tariffs on tire imports from China. In the next three years, car and light truck tires imported from China will suffer decreasingly punitive tariffs of 35 percent, 30 percent and 25 percent.     On Monday, China asked for talks with the U.S. on the tire tariff issue in accordance with the World Trade Organization (WTO) dispute settlement process.     Yao said the U.S. decision to impose special tariffs on tire imports from China had brought a negative impact to the two countries' trade relationship.     China wanted to have talks and negotiations with the U.S. side on the friction and to practically promote the development of bilateral and multilateral trade relationships, said Yao.     He reiterated that China firmly opposed trade protectionism and discouraged the use of trade remedies measures.

MONROVIA, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Ambassador to Liberia Zhou Yuxiao has said his country is a responsible and faithful member of the United Nations and it respects the resolutions adopted by the world body.     In a weekend interview with Xinhua, Ambassador Zhou expressed his confidence that the Chinese peacekeepers serving within the United Nations Mission in Liberia would remain in the country up to 2011 when the Liberians would go to polls to elect a new president.     The ambassador said the Chinese peacekeepers here in Liberia are working under the leadership and guidance of the UN mission.     "As far as I know, the United Nations has decided that UNMIL (the United Nations Mission in Liberia) will stay in Liberia until 2011, and supporting Liberian general election is part of UNMIL mandate."     Ambassador Zhou said there could be a small reduction in the size of the Chinese peacekeeping forces in the country, but the troops would remain in Liberia to provide the needed support up to2011 under the UN Mission.     "As part of the UN Peacekeeping force, the Chinese peacekeepers will certainly play its role in supporting the next elections," he said.     The current Chinese peacekeepers are drawn up in three contingents namely medical, transportation and engineering. He said during the Liberian forthcoming elections, obviously the electoral authority will need transportation support which the Chinese unit can assist with.     Ambassador Zhou said although China does not have a combat troop in the mission, but he is confident that the three contingents can play a positive role in the peacekeeping efforts as well as in supporting the forthcoming elections.     "China has always supported the UN endeavors in maintaining peace and stability in Liberia and my view is that the peacekeeping operation in Liberia has so far been successful and we should allow it to stay so," he added.
