OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) — Oceanside city officials are asking for developers to submit their bids to create an "iconic" downtown sign for the city, similar to areas of the county like the Gaslamp District, North Park, and Escondido.The city's request for proposals calls for a sign that will act as a new landmark and "the heart of the Sunset Market" at the intersection of Tremont Street and Pier View Way.The sign must be an "over-the-road" style sign that spans the intersection and aims to, "create a 'place' that locals and visitors are invited to enjoy for decades to come," the city says.Candidates can submit an initial design by January 13, 2021. The top five candidates will be granted ,000 and four weeks to flesh out their designs, budget, and other aspects. The city's Property and Business Improvement District will then choose the best three to go before a public vote. OCEANSIDE (KGTV) - A full-page ad published in the Sunday Union-Tribune is creating waves in the effort to save San Diego beaches. Save Oceanside Sand is a North County group who started about three months ago to help protect the beaches in Oceanside after decades of erosion. Co-founder Dirk Ackema tells 10News, “When that ad came out in the Sunday paper we were so excited, so surprised, so curious.” We did some digging and found out Christie Walton posted the ad. Not only is she an avid surfer and San Diego resident, she is the daughter-in-law to the founders of Walmart. Both Walton and Save Oceanside Sand have similar perspectives when it comes to saving the sand. They believe in installing jetties and backfill beaches to protect the sand. In the ad, Walton talks about the current dredging method as not being a long term solution for San Diego Coast. The installation of jetties and groins to protect coastlines has been used around the world. Walton even looks to the specific groin used in Hawaii as an option to be used here in San Diego. Save Oceanside Sand has grown traction throughout the community over the past few months and are looking to expand further now knowing Walton could be a major ally. 1229

OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) — San Diego County's third-largest city has three-and-half miles of coastline and is centrally located between Los Angeles and San Diego, making it a natural stop since its earliest days in the 1880s. "Originally, it was on a train depot. It was called Ocean Side; two words," said John Daley, a third generation resident, as he perused photographs at the Oceanside Historical Society. The two-room office near City Hall has become a repository for some 30,000 images and Daley seems to have an anecdote for every one."They had 11 saloons at one time in the 1880s, so apparently they liked saloons," said Daley. "It was a mostly male community at that time and that would be the place to go and eat and socialize. And there wasn't a lot of drinking in the saloons as there is today," Daley said.In fact, the story of Oceanside has a very practical side. Consider the name: Oceanside. Daley says you can thank farmers bound to the nearby fertile inland valley who would occasionally take a break. "They would go to the 'Ocean Side' to go have some fun. And that really became Oceanside," Daley said.Rail lines came in 1881, prompting a homestead in '83, and incorporation in 1888. Founded by land speculator Andrew Jackson Myers, Oceanside was born with 1,100 residents. Numbers destined to rise into the next century as the coastal community continued to become more connected by rail and road. "As soon as they had cars come here we were kind of the easy stopping point between Los Angeles and San Diego or Mexico. We became very prominent for that," said Daley.Oceanside beaches became go-to destinations via the new Highway 101 and business grew. Then came World War II and Camp Pendleton. Oceanside's now 5,000 residents would be outnumbered by a military migration. "As the story goes, they brought in about 7,000 people to build the base because it was such a large base, obviously," said Daley. "Oceanside had to come to grips with feeding, housing and recreating those people. So, people lived everywhere. They lived in sheds and garages."And Daley says an even greater boom would follow in the 1960s and 70s as the region became more well known. Oceanside grew at a rate of 2,000 homes a year while catering to millions of travelers. "Even the restaurant I eventually owned at one time — the 101 Cafe — was called the 101 Cafe and Trailer Park because they allowed trailers in the back of their lot," Daley added.Travelers still stop and some stay. But Daley believes the city is fairly built out at this point. He sees slow growth ahead but a bright future. "We have a beautiful city. I had a restaurant and the tourists always thought they dropped off in paradise when they came here," Daley said. 3019

OCEANSIDE, Calif., (KGTV) -- While many of San Diego County's beaches and parks are now off-limits due to the Coronavirus, Oceanside remains open. But some residents fear that a beach and golf course soft-closures only encourage people to ignore the stay-at-home order. Unlike the taped up beaches in San Diego, Del Mar, Solana Beach, and Encinitas, Thursday evening, Oceanside decided on a soft-closure. The parking lots, Pier, picnic areas, and playgrounds are closed. But the beaches remain open. "We figured, as long as we can encourage people and enforce that social distancing, we would be able to keep those recreational opportunities available," Samuel Liston with the City of Oceanside said. One person taking advantage of Oceanside's open beach was surfer, Oliver Dillard of Bay Park. Earlier, he was at Pacific Beach but was told by a police officer to leave."I'm just in the moment. Being here now," Dillard said. But not everyone is thrilled. "My reaction to them keeping open the beaches in even a soft way is horror," Oceanside resident, Frances Pope said. Pope suffers from a rare Autoimmune Disorder. She lives in a senior community in Oceanside. She says if her local beach is the only one that is open, people will flock to it, and you can forget about social distancing. "We're going to have a swarm of people, and it's not just Oceanside that is going to be hit by that," Pope said. "They're going to go back to their homes, inland or down south, and they will infect their families."It is not only beaches. Oceanside's City-run golf courses are also one of the last ones to remain open. According to the Pro-shop, golfers must walk on the course. No golf carts will be rented unless a person has a disability placard from the DMV.Still, Pope says this "halfway measure" is not enough. She wants everyone to take the virus seriously and stay home. "Every single person that can stop one trip out helps to keep everyone else safe," Pope said. The city says in regards to the beaches, they have lifeguards on duty. And they will keep a close eye. "We are constantly reevaluating these processes. Every day, multiple times a day, and if there are problems, we will have to do more," Liston said. 2222
