LISBON, Nov. 6 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese President Hu Jintao and his Portuguese counterpart, Anibal Cavaco Silva, agreed on Saturday to further deepen the comprehensive strategic partnership between their countries. Both China and Portugal boast ancient civilizations and have made great contributions to human progress, Hu said during a meeting here with Silva, noting that the smooth settlement of the Macao issue has set an example for other nations to tackle outstanding historical disputes. The two countries suffer no conflict of fundamental interests, their peoples cherish friendly feelings toward each other, and their relations have been growing steadily, he added.Development of bilateral ties since Beijing and Lisbon established diplomatic relations 31 years ago has demonstrated that the two sides should treat their relationship from a strategic and long-term perspective and stick firmly to the right direction for its further advancement, Hu said. Both countries should also understand and support each other's major concerns and enhance mutual political trust, while further expanding practical cooperation in various fields on the basis of mutual benefit and win-win progress to consolidate the foundation of their relations, he added. The Chinese side, Hu stressed, appreciates Portugal's adherence to the one China policy and its efforts to promote relations between China and the European Union (EU).Silva, for his part, welcomed Hu's visit, and hailed the time-honored ties between Portugal and China, which he said were based on mutual respect. The successful settlement of the Macao issue has created favorable environment for Macao's social and economic development, he said.

BEIJING, Aug. 31(Xinhua) -- China has cracked 278,000 criminal cases and broken up nearly 1,650 mafia-style gangs since it launched a campaign to maintain public security in rural-urban fringe zones and on campuses in January.About 256,000 suspects had been arrested as of Tuesday, according to a national working group on maintaining public security composed of officials from government agencies, including the Central Commission for Political and Legal Affairs of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the Ministry of Public Security.Investigating and rectifying public security threats remains an arduous task, said Wang Lequan, deputy secretary of the Commission. The government will maintain its "strike hard" policy against mafia-style gangs, crimes involving guns and explosives, gambling, prostitution and drugs, Wang said. Authorities have "zero-tolerance" for such crimes, he added.

BEIJING, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) -- A public supervision scheme for China's prosecutors will be rolled out nationwide next month, a senior Communist Party of China (CPC) leader said Tuesday.A pilot public supervisor scheme, which started six years ago, had proved effective in supervising judicial departments, said Zhou Yongkang, a Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, at a meeting in Beijing. From next month, the measure would be formally adopted nationwide, he said.More work should be done to improve the selection and management of public supervisors and to draft regulations, he said.Government departments, non-governmental organizations, state-owned enterprises and communities could nominate members of the public as supervisors to the procuratorates. The public supervisors would give opinions to procuratorates when prosecutors decided to drop corruption charges, or when a suspect in the corruption case complained about the arrest. They could also oversee the actions of prosecutors, to prevent illegal detentions, obtaining confessions through violence and torture, and illegal collection of evidence.A report by the Supreme People's Procuratorate to the National People's Congress in March 2008 said about 86 percent of procuratorates had taken part in the trial. At the meeting, Zhou admitted that the country still faced a tough task in judicial reform. The government would work out new policies to attract more prosecutors and judges to work in local judicial departments, he said.
