SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A driver was taken into custody after a passenger in his car died following in a crash in Paradise Hills early Wednesday morning.According to San Diego police, an 18-year-old driver and four passengers were in a car traveling westbound in the 6100 block of Paradise Valley Road at around 2 a.m. when the crash occurred.Police said the driver tried to make “an unsafe left” onto southbound Munda Road, but the car veered off the roadway and went down an embankment.All five people were able to get out of the car and made their way back to the street, but police said an 18-year-old girl had to be taken to the hospital.The girl, who was not identified, later died at the hospital from internal injuries.The driver fled the scene, but officers -- with the help of a helicopter overhead -- found him hiding in bushes a few blocks away surrounded by coyotes.Jail records obtained by ABC 10News show the driver, identified as 18-year-old Eduardo Douglas Jones, was booked on charges of gross vehicular manslaughter, hit-and-run causing death/injury, and DUI.The crash remains under investigation. 1119

SAN DIEGO (KGTV and CNN) - Actor Will Ferrell is ‘grateful’ for well wishes received after a car crash on Interstate 5 in Orange County Thursday night."While traveling back to Los Angeles after hosting a voter registration event in San Diego, a car carrying Will Ferrell and three of his colleagues was struck on the freeway by another vehicle," read a statement Ferrell's representatives from United Talent Agency.Ferrell and another passenger were "unhurt" and were released from an Orange County hospital, according to UTA.RELATED: Will Ferrell rushed to hospital after crash on I-5Ferrell's longtime driver, Mark Thompson, and his another passenger, identified as Carolina Barlow, remain hospitalized in stable condition, the statement said.Ferrell is "staying close by as his friends are being treated, and has expressed his deep gratitude to the first responders who were immediately at the scene and to the hospital team that took such great care of them," the statement added.Ferrell, 50, was a passenger in an SUV that overturned during a two-car accident late Thursday at Alicia Parkway in Mission Viejo, according to an accident report from the California Highway Patrol.According to the accident report, Ferrell's vehicle was struck when another car veered into its lane. Ferrell's SUV then struck the center divider median and subsequently overturned.On Thursday night, Ferrell appeared at a Funny or Die event at Oceanside High School called Glam Up the Midterms. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Coronado Police officer who was among the first to arrive at the Spreckels Mansion after the death of Rebecca Zahau testified Monday in the wrongful death civil case.Zahau’s death was ruled a suicide in 2011 but her family believes she was killed. They sued Adam Shacknai, the brother of Rebecca’s boyfriend.Adam Shacknai called 911 to report the body hanging from the balcony.TIMELINE: Rebecca Zahau?caseIn testimony Monday, the unidentified officer said his duty was to go through the home and make sure no one was still inside, deeming it safe for investigators to enter. Investigators would later find a single boot print on the balcony where Zahau’s nude body was found bound and hanging. The shoe print would end up being one key piece of evidence. Investigators needed to find out who it belonged to, and if someone else was with Zahau before her body was discovered.SLIDESHOW: Coronado death investigationThe Zahau family lawyer is trying to prove Adam Shacknai was with her and played a role in her death. Shacknai’s lawyers argue there is not a single piece of evidence that ties him to Zahau’s death.  His DNA was never found at the scene, and there were no eyewitness accounts to support the Zahau family’s claim, lawyers say. The officer on the witness stand was questioned about the shoe print by Keith Greer, Zahau’s family lawyer.“Do you know whether or not that footprint on the deck is yours?” Greer asked.“Personally I do not, but I’ve been told that it is,” replied the officer.He said as part of the investigation, his boots were taken in as evidence.Investigators later determined the print was accidentally left behind by the officer during his sweep of the home.The same officer who testified answered questions from Shacknai’s lawyers about a call he responded to at the home days before Zahau’s death.Zahau’s boyfriend’s son, Max Shacknai, had suffered a life-threatening fall inside of the home while in her care.“Once I entered the house I saw a small boy on the ground with some debris on him,” said the officer.He went on to say he remembers seeing Zahau very emotional and crying, but doesn’t remember directly speaking with her.A PERT counselor, a fingerprint expert and a handwriting expert are also expected to testify Monday. 2314

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A 2015 trip Duncan Hunter and his family reportedly took to Italy was a personal vacation unrelated to his work as a member of Congress, according to new court documents. The documents state that Hunter proposed and then canceled a visit to a base in or around Naples, Italy “in conjunction with the hunter family vacation.”According to the documents, “Hunter’s primary motive in attempting to schedule the November 2015 visit to a base was to generate a pretextual purpose so that he could misrepresent his personal use of campaign funds for the family vacation.” RELATED: Federal judge denies Rep. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A driver apparently lost control of his SUV and crash landed on the roof of a University City home early Tuesday morning.The crash happened at around 1:15 a.m. in the 3000 block of Pennant Way, according to San Diego police.Bill Crane told ABC 10News that after he heard a loud crash, he came out of his home and saw the male driver in his yard and the Jeep Cherokee Laredo on top of his next-door neighbor’s house."I was asleep at the time and I heard this crash, and I came out and I looked around and saw a guy kind of wandering near behind me, by what's left of the tree, and he was just kind of stumbling and I couldn't figure out what the hell that was. Because you usually don't think of a car being on someone's roof. So, when I finally figured that out, I went in to get my phone, and came back out and called 911, and he was gone,” Crane said.Crane called 911 to report the crash, and he then called the woman who lives in the house. However, Crane said the woman initially didn’t believe her.Crane added, "I called her twice and she said, 'What, a car on my roof? I'm not going out there, I can't believe that.’ It is pretty unbelievable.”ABC 10News learned the woman was asleep at the time and never heard the crash. She believes the SUV was coming down Pennant Way, somehow veered on a resident’s front lawn and launched onto her garage.A towing service used a crane to remove the Jeep from the roof of the home’s garage.There is no word on how much damage the home sustained, but inspectors said the house was structurally sound despite the wreck.No one was hurt in the crash.As of late Tuesday morning, police have not tracked down the SUV's driver. 1692
